Summary
Elizabeth Cythera Wilkersen Maybe—the problem was all spelled out right there in her name: a definite case of double identity. Glamorous, dramatic Cythera Wilkersen, daughter of a world explorer lost at sea, versus plain old home loving Betsy Maybe, recently… orphaned in an auto accident. Whoever she was, the lonely, defensive girl who came to live at Stoney Neck with her rich aunt and uncle badly needed to choose her part in life. The part she got, however, was on the stage. Literally dragged to a meeting of the high school drama club by Harry Irving, nut extraordinaire, Betsy soon finds herself cast as one of the lovable crazies in The Mad Woman of Chaillot. Oddly enough, in the process of acting the part of someone else, she begins to discover her own lines. This wry, humorous story captures all the magic of a first experience on the stage, but at the same time it is a love story, one that is true to some of the harsher realities of contemporary life through which Betsy traces her own bittersweet course.
