Summary
Little sister Patsy has just been buried, and, while Jessie's whole family grieves, her father's mourning is unrelenting, and he has retreated into himself. Living in Oklahoma during the depression means that although Jessie, her mother, and her brother work… extra hard, their very existence is threatened by their father's withdrawal.
