Résumé
Historical tragedy and study of kingship first performed in the 1590s. Richard II, a weak and ineffectual king, settles a quarrel and exiles Henry Bolingbroke, son of John of Gaunt, for ten years. He then seizes Henry's property to finance… the Irish wars. Henry returns to claim his inheritance, murders the king's supporters, and imprisons Richard. Henry usurps the throne, but lives in fear until the deposed Richard is no more. 1962. Uniform title: King Richard II
