Résumé
Learning to understand the Japanese has provided the author with his greatest spiritual joy and some of his most painful lessons in survival. The process has been spread over twenty years and between extremes of experience: a visit to Japan… at the age of twenty in return for rescuing two Japanese visitors from severe embarrassment in a whites-only cafe in Durban, and then as a British colonel in the P.O.W. camps in Java for three and a half years. 1982.
