100 Miles of Baseball: Fifty Games, One Summer
Par Heidi Lm Jacobs, Dale Jacobs, Heidi Lm Jacobs. 2021
From sandlots to major league stands, two fans set out to recapture their love of the game. For most of…
their lives together Dale Jacobs and Heidi LM Jacobs couldn’t imagine a spring without baseball. Their season tickets renewal package always seemed to arrive on the bleakest day of winter, offering reassurance that sunnier times were around the corner. Baseball was woven into the fabric of their lives, connecting them not only to each other but also to their families and histories. But by 2017 it was obvious something was amiss: the allure of another Sunday watching their Detroit Tigers had devolved to obligation. Not entirely sure what they were missing, they did have an idea on where it might be found: in their own backyard. Drawing a radius of one hundred miles around their home in Windsor, Ontario, Dale and Heidi set a goal of seeing fifty games at all levels of competition over the following summer. From bleachers behind high schools, to manicured university turf, to the steep concrete stands of major league parks, 100 Miles of Baseball tells the story of how two fans rediscovered their love of the game—and with it their relationships and the region they call home.Nomadland: Surviving america in the twenty-first century
Par Jessica Bruder. 2017
From the beet fields of North Dakota to the wilderness campgrounds of California to an Amazon warehouse in Texas, people…
who once might have kicked back to enjoy their sunset years are hard at work. Underwater on mortgages or finding that Social Security comes up short, they're hitting the road in astonishing numbers, forming a new community of nomads: RV and van-dwelling migrant laborers, or "workampers." Building on her groundbreaking Harper's cover story, "The End of Retirement," which brought attention to these formerly settled members of the middle class, Jessica Bruder follows one such RVer, Linda, between physically taxing seasonal jobs and reunions of her new van-dweller family, or "vanily." Bruder tells a compelling, eye-opening tale of both the economy's dark underbelly and the extraordinary resilience, creativity, and hope of these hardworking, quintessential Americans?many of them single women?who have traded rootedness for the dream of a better lifeRick Steves Best of Ireland (Rick Steves Ser.)

Par Barbara Drake-Vera. 2024
A prolific poet as a child, Barbara Drake-Vera loved writing almost as much as she adored her father, a moody…
postal employee with an elaborate comb-over and a fondness for Mahler. But when her successes sparked his rage, Barbara silenced her voice for years, terrified even to see her name in print. By age forty-nine, she was a professional journalist living in Peru and collaborating with her husband, a Peruvian-born photographer, to report on melting glaciers in the Andes, far from the reach of her father. Melted Away recounts what happens after her father is diagnosed with advancing Alzheimer’s and Barbara takes him into her home in Lima, beginning a process of self-discovery that uncovers a path toward personal and family healing. A diverse group of allies support her on this quest: a trio of caregiving women from the provinces, who serve as home-health aides; a mischievous, Cervantes-quoting, nonagenarian suitor; and a stubborn alpaca herder who lives beneath a long-worshipped, life-sustaining Andean glacier now melting from rapid climate change.Candid, poignant, and deeply researched, Melted Away is the true story of how a writer at midlife reclaims her agency, and an ardent plea to care for the planet by embracing collectivism and mutual aid.The Ridiculous Race: 26,000 Miles, 2 Guides, 1 Globe, No Airplanes
Par Steve Hely, Vali Chandrasekaran. 2008
The most absurd, hilarious, and ridiculous travelogue ever told, by two hit-TV comedy writers who raced each other around the…
world-for bragging rights and a very expensive bottle of ScotchIt started as a friendly wager: two old friends from The Harvard Lampoon, Steve Hely and Vali Chandrasekaran now hotshot Hollywood scribes, challenged each other to a race around the globe in opposite directions. There was only one rule: no airplanes. The first man to cross every line of longitude and arrive back in L.A. would win Scotch and infamy. But little did one racer know that the other planned to cheat him out of the big prize by way of a ride on a quarter-million-dollar jet pack. What follows is a pair of hilarious, hazardous, and eye-opening journeys into the farthest corners of the world. From the West Bank to the Aleutian Islands, the slums of Rio to the steppes of Mongolia, traveling by ocean freighter and the Trans-Siberian Railway (pranking each other mercilessly along the way), Vali and Steve plunge eagerly and ill-prepared into global adventure. The Ridiculous Race is a comic travelogue unlike any other, an outrageous tale of two gentlemen travelers who can't wait to don baggy cardigan sweaters, clench corncob pipes between their teeth, and yell at their sons, "You lazy bums! When we were your age, we raced around the world without airplanes!"The Thinking Person's Guide to Sobriety

across Africa, in speeding SUVs, rickety buses and dilapidated trains. He travelled for almost six months, over 6,000 miles, through nine countries – Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad, Nigeria, Niger, Mali and Senegal. The journey was breathtaking and nerve-shattering, but never dull. The people he met were exciting, bizarre and pathetic, but they never leave you cold. In Somali, Peter Boehm describes psychiatrists who consider all their compatriots to be mad – as do the Somalis themselves and, in the end, even the author thinks he’s mad too! In Sudan, he meets doctors who re-seal women; in Chad there are street kids already sitting on their suitcases, awaiting the journey to Germany; in Mali he meets traditional healers who are, at the same time, GPs, best friends, and agony aunts; in Nigeria there are traditional leaders whose subjects throw themselves on the ground before them, and Islamic judges who savour the whippings they’ve ordered as one would a high-quality wine. For good measure, Peter Boehm has kept a record of the troubles and transformations of a European in Africa.Peter Boehm’s tone is laconic, and free of any sentimentality. You’ll never have read about Africa like this before.Eredi di Tamerlano

impossible architecture of lighthouses. These precariously perched structures have been the homes and workplaces of keepers whose romantic guardianship has saved countless lives from cruel seas. While that way of life may have faded away, as the lights go out and the buildings crumble, we still have their stories. This collection of more than thirty tales spans the heights and depths of human experience: the blind lighthouse keeper tending a light in the Arctic Circle, the intrepid young woman saving ships from wreck beginning at just age twelve, the desperate plight of a crew cut off for forty days with meager supplies, the lighthouse haunted by the clacking sound of a long-passed keeper’s ghostly typewriter.Interweaving literary inspiration and elements from Jules Verne, Virginia Woolf, and Edgar Allan Poe and accompanied by beautiful illustrations, nautical charts, maps, architectural plans, and curious facts, these illuminating stories will transport the reader in a book as full of wonder as the far-flung lighthouses themselves.QUIRKY STORIES AND A LITERARY APPROACH: Fascinating stories and anecdotes about each lighthouse include such features as notable inhabitants (Virginia Woolf), tantalizing on-site discoveries (Edgar Allen Poe’s unfinished writings), and weird twists, such as a never-before-seen species made extinct by a lighthouse keeper’s cat (Tibbles).UNIQUELY ILLUSTRATED: The gorgeous pointillistic full-page illustrations, equally beautiful location maps, and detailed building diagrams make this a distinctive celebration of these fascinating structures and their places in the world.AN ARMCHAIR TOUR OF LIGHTHOUSES AROUND THE WORLD: The thirty+ stunning lighthouses featured include:Adziogol Lighthouse: Rybalche, Kherson Oblast (Ukraine)Amédée Lighthouse: Amédée, Nouméa, New Caledonia (France)Bell Rock Lighthouse: Inchcape Rock, Arbroath, Scotland (UK)Buda Lighthouse: Buda Island, San Jaime de Enveija, Tarragona (Spain)Eddystone Lighthouse: Eddystone Rocks, Rame Head, Plymouth (UK)Evangelistas Lighthouse: Evangelistas Islets, Natales, Última Esperanza (Chile)Great Isaac Cay Lighthouse: Great Isaac Cay, Bimini Islands (Bahamas)Grip Lighthouse: Grip, Kristiansund, Nordmøre, Møre og Romsdal (Norway)Guardafui Lighthouse: Cape Guardafui, Bari, Puntland (Somalia)Klein Curaçao Lighthouse: Klein Curaçao, Curaçao (Netherlands)Lime Rock Lighthouse: Lime Rock, Newport, Rhode Island (USA)Maatsuyker Lighthouse: Maatsuyker Island, Tasmania (Australia)Robben Island Lighthouse: Robben Island, Cape Town (South Africa)Rocher aux Oiseaux Lighthouse: Rocher aux Oiseaux (Bird Rock), Madeleine Islands, Quebec (Canada)Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse: Rubjerg, Hjørring, Jutland (Denmark)San Juan de Salvamento Lighthouse: Isla de los Estados, Patagonia (Argentina)Smalls Lighthouse: Smalls Rocks, Marloes, Pembrokeshire, Wales (UK)Stephens Island Lighthouse: Takapourewa or Stephens Island, Marlborough (New Zealand)Svyatonossky Lighthouse: Svyatoy Nos, Múrmansk Oblast (Russia)Wenwei Zhou Lighthouse: Wenwei Zhou or Gap Rock, Wanshan Archipelago, Hong Kong (China)Perfect for:Readers of quirky historyFans of nautical talesCoastal residents and visitorsArmchair travelersAnyone who has ever dreamed of life as a lighthouse keeperGift giving for Father's Day, Mother's Day, birthday, graduation, or housewarmingYour guide to Disney's hidden treasures--including Fantasyland and Storybook Circus secrets!Whether this is your first or fiftieth visit, you'd be…
