Bring them closer: For parents and educators (Bring Them Closer #01)
Par Connie Jakab. 2024
Our kids are not okay. The children and youth mental health crisis is at an all-time high. Anxiety and depression…
are skyrocketing. In Bring Them Closer, author Connie Jakab shares from her experience working with parents and educators with for 25 years in homes and schools, but also what she learned in her own home with a mental health crisis her family faced. She digs deeper into questions like: What does the idea "you never send the hurting away; you bring them closer" really look like? How do we create a connection with our children, so they live healed and whole? How do we see our children free of anxiety, depression, and behavioural issues? How do you support a child or student who is depressed? How do you get through to an oppositional child or student? How do you parent or teach a student with ADHD or ASD? How do you help a child or student drowning in anxiety? ?A history of the world in twelve shipwrecks
Par David Gibbins. 2024
The Viking warship of King Cnut the Great. Henry VIII's the Mary Rose. Captain John Franklin's doomed HMS Terror. The…
SS Gairsoppa, destroyed by a Nazi U-boat in the Atlantic during World War II. Since we first set sail on the open sea, ships and their wrecks have been an inevitable part of human history. Archaeologists have made spectacular discoveries excavating these sunken ships, their protective underwater cocoon keeping evidence of past civilizations preserved. World renowned maritime archeologist David Gibbins ties together the stories of some of the most significant shipwrecks in time to form a single overarching narrative of world history. A History of the World in Twelve Shipwrecks is not just the story of those ships, the people who sailed on them, and the cargo and treasure they carried, but also the story of the spread of people, religion, and ideas around the world; it is a story of colonialism, migration, and the indominable human spirit that continues today. Drawing on decades of experience, Gibbins reveals the riches beneath the waves and shows us how the treasures found there can be a porthole to the past that tell a new story about the world and its underwater secretsWhy Dual Language Schooling

Great Patriotic War (1941–45), in which the Soviet people, led by Russia, saved the world from the greatest evil of the twentieth century. At the same time, the Russian government has banned civil society institutions and initiatives that remind the country of the legacy of Soviet political violence.Remembering the War, Forgetting the Terror explores the appeal of the cult of the Great Patriotic War and the waning public interest in Soviet political terror as intertwined trends. Ekaterina V. Haskins argues that these developments are driven not only by the weaponization of the official memory of World War II but also by familial pieties and deep-seated habits of memory. Haskins uncovers how widely shared practices of remembrance have taken root and flourished through recurring exposure to war films, urban environments, popular commemorative rituals, and digital archives. Combining scholarship and personal biography, Haskins illuminates why, despite the staggering toll of World War II and internal political violence on Soviet families, most Russian citizens continue to proudly embrace their family’s participation in the war effort and avoid discussion of domestic political persecution. Elegantly written and convincingly argued, this book is an important intervention into contemporary rhetoric and memory studies that will also appeal to broader audiences interested in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the war in Ukraine.Social Work and Human Development (Transforming Social Work Practice Series)

Applications of Game Theory in Deep Learning provides an extensive and insightful exploration of game theory in deep learning, diving deep into both the theoretical foundations and the real-world applications that showcase this intriguing intersection of fields. Starting with the essential foundations for comprehending both game theory and deep learning, delving into the individual significance of each field, the book culminates in a nuanced examination of Game Theory's pivotal role in augmenting and shaping the development of Deep Learning algorithms. By elucidating the theoretical underpinnings and practical applications of this synergistic relationship, we equip the reader with a comprehensive understanding of their combined potential. In our digital age, where algorithms and autonomous agents are becoming more common, the combination of game theory and deep learning has opened a new frontier of exploration. The combination of these two disciplines opens new and exciting avenues. We observe how artificial agents can think strategically, adapt to ever-shifting environments, and make decisions that are consistent with their goals and the dynamics of their surroundings. This book presents case studies, methodologies, and real-world applications. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of Engineering Education in industrialising countries, with Southern Africa as the case study, benchmarked…
on institutions from the industrialised world, with UK institutions as the reference. This was motivated by the perennial shortage of engineers and engineering skills to drive industry in Southern Africa, compounded by the mismatch of skills between those produced by tertiary institutions and those required by industry. This book focuses on the insufficiencies in training, through addressing the gap where the majority of engineering academics’ qualifications at MSc/MEng level fall short of the internationally acceptable PhD/DEng/DTech. In order to address such insufficiencies, the book proposes and advocates for reskilling and doctoral training of engineering academics through the proposed and established DTCs within the region. The book is targeted at graduate students, engineering academics, researchers, university administrators, foreign aid agencies, captains of industry and policy-makers in governments. To all these readers, the book offers:Taking the “Oof!” Out of Proofs (Textbooks in Mathematics)
Par Alexandr Draganov. 2024
This book introduces readers to the art of doing mathematical proofs. Proofs are the glue that holds mathematics together. They…
make connections between math concepts and show why things work the way they do. This book teaches the art of proofs using familiar high-school concepts, such as numbers, polynomials, functions, and trigonometry. It retells math as a story, where the next chapter follows from the previous one.Readers will see how various mathematical concepts are tied and will see that mathematics is not a pile of formulas and facts; rather, it has an orderly and beautiful edifice. The author begins with basic rules of logic and then progresses through the topics already familiar to the students: numbers, inequalities, functions, polynomials, exponents, and trigonometric functions. There are also beautiful proofs for conic sections, sequences, and Fibonacci numbers. Each chapter has exercises for the reader.Reviewer Comments:I find the book very impressive. The choice and sequence of topics is excellent, and it is wonderful to have all of these things together in one volume. Theorems are clearly stated, and proofs are accurate. – Michael ComenetzThe thoroughness of the narrative is one of the main strengths of the book. The book provides a perfect illustration of mathematical thinking. Each step of a given derivation is precise and clear. – Julie GershunskayaDraganov’s book stands out from the many competing books. Draganov’s goal is to show that mathematics depends on the notion of proof. Unlike other transition books, he addresses mathematical topics at an accessible level, rather than topics studied later in the university curriculum. – Ken RosenThis book constitutes the proceedings of the 45th Annual Conference of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM-GCPR 2023, which…
took place in Heidelberg, Germany, during September 19-22, 2023. The 40 full papers included in these proceedings were carefully reviewed and selected from 76 submissions. Par Steen Ledet Christiansen. 2024
Steen Ledet Christiansen&’s Storytelling in &“Kabuki&” explores the series created by David Mack—a slow, recursive narrative that focuses on the…
death of Kabuki and her past. The series ran from 1994 to 2004 in a variety of miniseries, one-shots, and spin-offs, rather than following a conventional American monthly release schedule. Most of the series explores different perspectives on the same event and adds background to Kabuki&’s past, usually through surreal sequences, dreams, and near-death experiences. The flexibility of comics&’ approach to chronology, space, focalization, narrative, and fictionality enabled Mack to produce an unusual experience. Kabuki tells a story that can only exist via comics. Christiansen analyzes the visual design of the series, a heterogeneous collection of styles depending on the story. To understand Kabuki, it is crucial to explore the visual styles, as well as the use of visual and spatial rhymes and mixed media forms. Because Kabuki employs a complex layering of focalizations, diegetic levels, and metafictional self-reflectivity that is rare in mainstream American comics, it utilizes a narrative poetics that focuses on constant repeating, restating, and returning to the same events.Kabuki&’s unique compositional layering allows Christiansen to provide a clear example of how comics work while also expanding on critical vocabulary, especially in terms of spatial poetics. By exploring spatial form, Christiansen illuminates and gives a critical framework to a different and underexamined aspect of comics.Exile and the Jews: Literature, History, and Identity (JPS Anthologies of Jewish Thought)
Par Nancy E. Berg, Marc Saperstein. 2024
This first comprehensive anthology examining Jewish responses to exile from the biblical period to our modern day gathers texts from…
all genres of Jewish literary creativity to explore how the realities and interpretations of exile have shaped Judaism, Jewish politics, and individual Jewish identity for millennia. Ordered along multiple arcs—from universal to particular, collective to individual, and mythic-symbolic to prosaic everyday living—the chapters present different facets of exile: as human condition, in history and life, in holiday rituals, in language, as penance and atonement, as internalized experience, in relation to the Divine Presence, and more. By illuminating the multidimensional nature of &“exile&”—political, philosophical, religious, psychological, and mythological—widely divergent evaluations of Jewish life in the Diaspora emerge. The word &“exile&” and its Hebrew equivalent, galut, evoke darkness, bleakness—and yet the condition offers spiritual renewal and engenders great expressions of Jewish cultural creativity: the Babylonian Talmud, medieval Jewish philosophy, golden age poetry, and modern Jewish literature.Exile and the Jews will engage students, academics, and general readers in contemplating immigration, displacement, evolving identity, and more.Creative Advertising Concept and Copy: A Practical, Multidisciplinary Approach

Helping Your Students Write Personal Statements analyzes the components of the effective personal statement and provides examples from many successful essays by actual college students, as well as exercises for students. It also gives advisors the tools to help engage students who might not ordinarily consider themselves credible candidates for nationally competitive fellowships. This book uniquely takes a developmental approach, offering college advisors and teachers a concrete, step-by-step plan to help any student craft the best, most persuasive personal statement they can write, helping transform their students into compelling, competitive candidates.Organizational Learning as Relational Governance (Relational Economics and Organization Governance)
Par Jessica Geraldo Schwengber. 2024
This book critically examines existing organizational learning theories that often center on employees and adopt a neo-classical organizational view. In…
this book, organizational learning (OL) is conceptualized from a relational governance perspective. Departing from the relational economics approach, it describes organizations as dynamic nexuses of stakeholders' resources and interests, extending beyond conventional intra-organizational contexts to encompass an open systems view. By viewing organizations as independent entities, distinct from individual stakeholders, the author introduces the concept of transactions as the fundamental unit of analysis in organization theory. Stakeholders contribute diverse rationalities, and OL emerges as the process of relationalizing these rationalities, enabling multi-contextual transactions within organizations. This book sheds light on epistemological and ontological challenges in OL literature, such as the OL paradox and anthropomorphism. To address these issues, the author advocates a shift from methodological individualism to methodological relationism, wherein OL becomes a micro-meso-relational process involving both stakeholders and the organization as an entity. Combining conceptual insights with empirical evidence from a multinational company's case study, the book showcases how relational learning can be practically applied in organizations. The findings corroborate the conceptual framework, supporting the notion of organizations as resource-rich nexuses and learning as a comprehensive relational process involving both entities and stakeholders. This book offers an essential contribution to the field. It appeals to scholars and practitioners interested in organizational studies, corporate governance, and relational economics.Principles of Econometrics: Theory and Applications (Classroom Companion: Economics)

Par Robert J. Sampson. 2024
Great American City demonstrates the powerfully enduring impact of place. Based on one of the most ambitious studies in…
the history of social science, Robert J. Sampson’s Great American City presents the fruits of over a decade’s research to support an argument that we all feel and experience every day: life is decisively shaped by your neighborhood. Engaging with the streets and neighborhoods of Chicago, Sampson, in this new edition, reflects on local and national changes that have transpired since his book’s initial publication, including a surge in gun violence and novel forms of segregation despite an increase in diversity. New research, much of it a continuation of the influential discoveries in Great American City, has followed, and here, Sampson reflects on its meaning and future directions. Sampson invites readers to see the status of the research initiative that serves as the foundation of the first edition—the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN)—and outlines the various ways other scholars have continued his work. Both accessible and incisively thorough, Great American City is a must-read for anyone interested in cutting-edge urban sociology and the study of crime.Essential Life Skills for Girls: Everything You Need to Know to Thrive at Home, at School, and Out in the World
