Par Sally Downham Miller. 2021
Grief. Whether through the death of a loved one, a shattering divorce, a mass tragedy, or other life-altering loss, grief…
is a common experience of humankind. When Sally Miller became a 24-year-old widow with two young children, she did not know where to turn. Confused, angry, and devastated, she soon realized that she was not alone, that many others had comparable responses to their different losses. And that talking with each other helped. This led her to develop a Grief Support Group. Decades later, using Sally's topics and experience, many similar groups are located around the country, where anyone who is grieving can find techniques and tools, friendship and support, no matter what their age or circumstance. Mourning and Dancing: The Group offers a valuable curriculum to help others set up a group in their community that will enable grieving people to begin their journey toward healing through proven methods and suggestions on how to deal with the realities of grief while shaping positive thought processes that can carry them into the days and years to come.Death, Immortality, and Eternal Life (The British Society for the Philosophy of Religion Series)
Par T. Ryan Byerly. 2021
This book offers a multifaceted exploration of death and the possibilities for an afterlife. By incorporating a variety of approaches…
to these subjects, it provides a unique framework for extending and reshaping enduring philosophical debates around human existence up to and after death. Featuring original essays from a diverse group of international scholars, the book is arranged in four main sections. Firstly, it addresses how death is or should be experienced, engaging with topics such as near-death experiences, continuing bonds with the deceased, and attitudes toward dying. Secondly, it looks at surviving death, addressing the metaphysics of human persons, the nature of time, the nature of the true self, and the nature of the divine. It then evaluates the value of mortality and immortality, drawing upon the resources of the history of philosophy, meta-analysis of contemporary debates, and the analogy between individual death and species extinction. Finally, it explores what an eternal life might be like, examining the place of selflessness, embodiment, and racial identity in such a life. This volume allows for a variety of philosophical and theological perspectives to be brought to bear on the end of life and what might be beyond. As such, it will be a fascinating resource for scholars in the philosophy of religion, theology, and death studies.Likeness: Fathers, sons, a portrait
Par David Macfarlane. 2021
When the worst that can happen, happens, the only useful lesson is the knowledge that it can. That's the take-away:…
a world can actually end, time can actually run out, sadness can prevail. But I didn't know that then . . . From one of Canada's most celebrated writers and the author of the classic memoir The Danger Tree comes an occasionally hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking meditation on love, memory, and the fathomless depths of grief. Likeness is a multi-generational story told through the vehicle of a painting, a portrait of Macfarlane by the well-known Canadian artist, John Hartman. The painting has ended up unexpectedly, temporarily, and enormously in Macfarlane's living room. He looks at it—a lot. It's hard to avoid. To Macfarlane's surprise, the painting becomes a portal—not only into his own past, but into his father's, too. Through these two histories is woven the present—one dominated by illness. Macfarlane's son undergoes treatment for leukemia during the time the painting hangs in the family living room. Blake is a young man rich in creative possibility. There is music to be composed. There are films to be made. But Blake's future is as circumscribed by fate as his father's was wide open. A tragic difference, eloquently noted. Likeness can be very funny. But it is also inescapably, achingly sad. A book of transcendent beauty, Likeness demonstrates the power of memory to transform the tragic into the precious and profound. No Takebacks: A Give & Take 1.5 Novella (Give & Take)

Par Jeffrey M. Jentzen. 2009
A death occurs at home, in a hospital, on a street: why? As Jeffrey Jentzen reveals, we often never know.…
Why is the American system of death investigation so inconsistent and inadequate? What can the events of the assassination of President Kennedy, killing of Bobby Kennedy, and Chappaquiddick reveal about the state of death investigation? If communities in early America had a coroner at all, he was politically appointed and poorly trained. As medicine became more sophisticated and the medical profession more confident, physicians struggled to establish a professionalized, physician-led system of death investigation. The conflict between them and the coroners, as well as politicians and law enforcement agencies, led to the patchwork of local laws and practices that persist to this day. In this unique political and cultural history, Jentzen draws on archives, interviews, and his own career as a medical examiner to look at the way that a long-standing professional and political rivalry controls public medical knowledge and public health.Tell Me Who I Am: The Story Behind the Netflix Documentary

Par Heather Pool. 2021
What leads us to respond politically to the deaths of some citizens and not others? This is one of the…
critical questions Heather Pool asks in Political Mourning. Born out of her personal experiences with the trauma of 9/11, Pool’s astute book looks at how death becomes political, and how it can mobilize everyday citizens to argue for political change. Pool examines four tragedies in American history—the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the lynching of Emmett Till, the September 11 attacks, and the Black Lives Matter movement—that offered opportunities to tilt toward justice and democratic inclusion. Some of these opportunities were taken, some were not. However, these watershed moments show, historically, how political identity and political responsibility intersect and how racial identity shapes who is mourned. Political Mourning helps explain why Americans recognize the names of Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland; activists took those cases public while many similar victims have been ignored by the news media. Concluding with an afterword on the coronavirus, Pool emphasizes the importance of collective responsibility for justice and why we ought to respond to tragedy in ways that are more politically inclusive.Thirty days: a journey to the end of love

prepared myself for everything except for her death. Now that she is gone, I am desperate to know her as I never knew her." Thirty Days is a portrait of grief, of a marriage and of a family. It is the moving memoir of Mark's wife of 33 years, Kerryn Baker, who died ten months after her diagnosis, aged 55, from stomach cancer. It is also a study in how we construct our own version of the past, after Mark discovers a cache of Kerryn's letters in the laundry cupboard and has to rethink their relationship. It is a book about memory and its uncertainties, as Mark sifts through photos and home movies, as his wife gets sicker, and his search for clues about their relationship grows more desperate. In her last days, Kerryn reveals her traumatic childhood to Mark for the first time. She emerges as the rock of the family, a brave and wise woman, clear-eyed about her treatment, focused on finding the path to a peaceful death. The Sister's Tale: A Novel

Par Mark S. Negley. 2021
Loss isn&’t one-size-fits-all. It comes in a million different forms—and all of them hurt. Whatever your situation, there is hope:…
you are not alone, you will get through this, and you can experience true joy again! An estimated two-hundred million Americans face the pain and confusion of loss every year, and most of us have no idea how to handle it. We&’re thrown into the deep end of grief without a life preserver, desperately trying to stay afloat in a sea of shock, anger, frustration, heartbreak, and hopelessness. Mark Negley knows what it&’s like to face the pain of loss and fight to build a new life from the ashes. Over the past thirty years, he has faced cancer, raised a special needs child, lost his beloved mother, nearly lost his wife in a car accident, and supported her through depression and mental health issues resulting from her brain injuries. Tragically, in 2016, Mark received the biggest blow of all when his wife of twenty years took her own life. Frustrated by the lack of relatable resources to help navigate his grief recovery, Mark set out to redefine the loss experience. After five years of research, in-depth interviews with loss survivors, and leading grief groups, he realized that the problem isn&’t how we experience grief; the problem is that traditional models make it seem too formulaic. He found that grief recovery isn&’t a linear progression from one clearly defined stage to the next; rather, it&’s a series of concentric circles—like ripples in a pond—that emanate from a center point of impact. Those circles form three &“interconnected&” phases of recovery called Survive, Alive, and Thrive. In Survive-Alive-Thrive: Navigating the Journey from Loss to Hope to Happiness, Mark Negley takes you on a journey through his loss experiences, using his story and the stories of several others to teach his revolutionary new model of grief recovery. You don&’t have to walk this difficult road alone. With the help of Mark and others, you can navigate from loss to hope and then to happiness. You don&’t have to settle for survival! Set your sights higher and learn how to thrive again! To Serve the Living: Funeral Directors and the African American Way of Death
Par Suzanne E. Smith. 2010
From antebellum slavery to the twenty-first century, African American funeral directors have orchestrated funerals or “homegoing” ceremonies with dignity and…
pageantry. As entrepreneurs in a largely segregated trade, they were among the few black individuals in any community who were economically independent and not beholden to the local white power structure. Most important, their financial freedom gave them the ability to support the struggle for civil rights and, indeed, to serve the living as well as bury the dead. During the Jim Crow era, black funeral directors relied on racial segregation to secure their foothold in America’s capitalist marketplace. With the dawning of the civil rights age, these entrepreneurs were drawn into the movement to integrate American society, but were also uncertain how racial integration would affect their business success. From the beginning, this tension between personal gain and community service shaped the history of African American funeral directing. For African Americans, death was never simply the end of life, and funerals were not just places to mourn. In the “hush harbors” of the slave quarters, African Americans first used funerals to bury their dead and to plan a path to freedom. Similarly, throughout the long—and often violent—struggle for racial equality in the twentieth century, funeral directors aided the cause by honoring the dead while supporting the living. To Serve the Living offers a fascinating history of how African American funeral directors have been integral to the fight for freedom.
