George Bowering was born in Penticton, where his great-grandfather Willis Brinson lived, and Bowering has never been all that far…
from the Okanagan Valley in his heart and imagination. Early in the twenty-first century, he was made a permanent citizen of Oliver. Bowering has family up and down the Valley, and he goes there as often as he can. He has been asked during his many visits to Okanagan bookstores over the years to publish a collection of his writing about the Valley.Writing the Okanagan draws on forty books Bowering has published since 1960 - poetry, fiction, history, and some forms he may have invented. Selections from Delsing (1961) and Sticks & Stones (1962) are here, as is "Driving to Kelowna" from The Silver Wire (1966). Other Okanagan towns, among them Rock Creek, Peachland, Vernon, Kamloops, Princeton, and Osoyoos, inspire selections from work published through the 1970s and on to 2013. Fairview, the old mining site near Oliver, is the focus of an excerpt from Caprice (1987, 2010), one volume in Bowering's trilogy of historical novels. "Desert Elm" takes as its two main subjects the Okanagan Valley and his father, who, as Bowering did, grew up there. With the addition of some previously unpublished works, the reader will find the wonder of the Okanagan here, in both prose and poetry.Let the Church Say Amen

relationships in the tradition of her breakout book, A Place of Yes.Bethenny is good at many things--being an entrepreneur, mom, and TV star--but when it comes to relationships, she is the first to admit that she has had many failures. The good news is, in working through the mistakes, she has already learned many things about what she doesn't want, that she won't accept, and that she shouldn't settle for. And most importantly, she still believes in love and that her perfect relationship is still to come. Filled with a mix of candid personal stories and the no-nonsense advice she's known for, I Suck at Relationships So You Don't Have To is the next step on Bethenny's A Place of Yes journey. This is a book by someone who has made many relationship mistakes and knows a thing or two because of it. Bethenny takes a deep look at her own dating and relationship history and gets to the heart of the mistakes women make and what it takes to find and sustain a meaningful connection. Look for Bethenny's take on hot topics such as: understanding your man; the dos and don'ts of dating; how to trust your gut; and much more. Despite all her relationship disasters, Bethenny remains an optimist; she keeps going, keeps trying, and continues to open her heart to love. She holds that failure ultimately adds up to something and, that in the end, all mishaps are stair steps to a greater success. In the Trenches: A Russian Woman Soldier's Story of World War I
Par Tatiana L. Dubinskaya. 1916
Tatiana L. Dubinskaya&’s autobiographical novel of life in the Russian army marked the first major work published by a female…
World War I soldier in the Soviet Union. Often compared to All Quiet on the Western Front, Dubinskaya&’s stark and unsparing story presents a rare look at women in combat and one of the few works of fiction set on the eastern front. Zinaida, a Russian schoolgirl, runs away from home to join the army. Sent to the front, she endures the horrors of trench warfare and the hardships of military life. Undercurrents of revolutionary thinking filter into the ranks as morale begins to crumble. Zinaida must come to grips with the havoc unleashed by the czar&’s overthrow and the new socialist government&’s attempts to impose revolutionary reforms on the army. Destabilization and desertion follow, and her regiment joins the chaotic mass retreat of the Russian army in the summer of 1917. In addition to Dubinskaya&’s original novel, this edition includes selections from her 1936 autobiographical work, Machine Gunner, which she rewrote to satisfy Stalinist censors.Covenant with Death
