-- 4e de couvIn the Midst of Alarms

Writing the Okanagan
Par George Bowering. 2015
George Bowering was born in Penticton, where his great-grandfather Willis Brinson lived, and Bowering has never been all that far…
from the Okanagan Valley in his heart and imagination. Early in the twenty-first century, he was made a permanent citizen of Oliver. Bowering has family up and down the Valley, and he goes there as often as he can. He has been asked during his many visits to Okanagan bookstores over the years to publish a collection of his writing about the Valley.Writing the Okanagan draws on forty books Bowering has published since 1960 - poetry, fiction, history, and some forms he may have invented. Selections from Delsing (1961) and Sticks & Stones (1962) are here, as is "Driving to Kelowna" from The Silver Wire (1966). Other Okanagan towns, among them Rock Creek, Peachland, Vernon, Kamloops, Princeton, and Osoyoos, inspire selections from work published through the 1970s and on to 2013. Fairview, the old mining site near Oliver, is the focus of an excerpt from Caprice (1987, 2010), one volume in Bowering's trilogy of historical novels. "Desert Elm" takes as its two main subjects the Okanagan Valley and his father, who, as Bowering did, grew up there. With the addition of some previously unpublished works, the reader will find the wonder of the Okanagan here, in both prose and poetry.Passionate Hearts: 5 Activist Romances

Resist! Romance? These five couples try to deny the sparks that fly with those on the opposite side of their picket lines. But love has a way of finding the perfect compromise. Core Attraction: When Dr. Declan MacCarthy protests outside the power plant where Fiona Halpin handles public relations, she’s almost too busy doing damage control to notice how gorgeous he is. As Fiona slowly warms to Declan and his passion for his cause, can she drop her defenses enough to let him reach her inner core? Hard Knocks: Neurologist Helen Chang Frobisher is writing op-eds against Portland’s new hockey rink to try to prevent the kinds of concussive brain injury that plagues her father. Oregon Wolves player Adam Magnus is fighting to build a successful career on the ice. But while the two spar in public over the future of a sports franchise on the brink, in private, they battle an impossible attraction. California Sunrise: Dr. Raúl Mendez finds himself drawn to plucky single mother Alicia Fuentes after he diagnoses her young son on the autism spectrum. Can their blossoming relationship withstand the political and very personal battles surrounding immigration? The Very Thought of You: San Francisco builder Nick Mancini has offered the tenants in his new apartment house a good deal: twenty-five grand to vacate the premises so he can demolish it for his next project. Molly Hewitt is rallying everyone to hold out for far more cash. Surely he can flirt his way out of this roadblock—or are the stakes too high this time? Edie and the CEO: Edie Rowan is passionate about workers’ rights, but when her protests backfire, championing the little guy gets her in trouble with sexy CEO Everett Kirk. He sends her to attend management camp—and even drives her there himself. But when they let down their professional guard, the sparks start to fly. Par Niccolò Machiavelli, Christopher Celenza. 2018
Packaged in handsome, affordable trade editions, Clydesdale Classics is a new series of essential works. From the musings of intellectuals…
such as Thomas Paine in Common Sense to the striking personal narrative of Harriet Jacobs in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, this new series is a comprehensive collection of our intellectual history through the words of the exceptional few.Widely acknowledged as Machiavelli’s defining work, The Prince is an innovative and rich treatise marked by his political theories and the principles of leadership. Based upon his own experiences witnessing “the actions of great men” and the often immoral aspects that come with power, Machiavelli encouraged ambition amongst leaders—which was a break from the philosophy of other contemporary thinkers. The Prince identifies the aims of powerful leaders, which can help to justify the use of largely immoral means in their methods. With a new foreword by scholar Christopher Celenza, this essential work on politics contemplates leadership in a manner still relevant today. This lesson in autocratic rule will provide the reader with the author’s rational approach to control and the contextualization for the term “Machiavellian.”The Postman's Fiancée

Par Mahi Binebine. 2017
Sidi is dying. In the last days of this all-powerful tyrant, his faithful court fool takes stock of the decades he…
has spent in the king's service. For the many years have left certain indelible wounds.During his service, the fool has been the king's closest counsel, his most trusted companion and adviser, privy to the king's deepest secrets and most intimate thoughts. It is an honoured position for which many other courtiers would pay a hefty price. Something the fool understands only too well, for this closeness has indeed come at a terrible cost. What price the confidence of a great king? Is it stories, jokes, witty repartee? Or does the debt fall closer to home? Perhaps it must be paid far from the magnificent palaces, feasting and festivities of the royal court. Perhaps it must be paid in the death jails of a formidable prison fortress far out in the desert; a place so feared that few dare to speak its name . . .
