The relativistic…
one is concerned with the "first law of binary mechanics", a remarkably simple variational relation that plays a crucial role in the modern understanding of the gravitational two-body problem, thereby contributing to the effort to detect gravitational-wave signals from binary systems of black holes and neutron stars. The work reported in the thesis provides a mathematically elegant extension of previous results to compact objects that carry spin angular momentum and quadrupolar deformations, which more accurately represent astrophysical bodies than mere point particles. The Newtonian problem is concerned with the isochrone problem of celestial mechanics, namely the determination of the set of radial potentials whose bounded orbits have a radial period independent of the angular momentum. The thesis solves this problem completely in a geometrical way and explores its consequence on a variety of levels, in particular with a complete characterisation of isochrone orbits. The thesis is exceptional in the breadth of its scope and achievements. It is clearly and eloquently written, makes excellent use of images, provides careful explanations of the concepts and calculations, and it conveys the author’s personality in a way that is rare in scientific writing, while never sacrificing academic rigor.Microparticle Dynamics in Electrostatic and Flow Fields (Springer Theses)
Par Sheng Chen. 2023
This thesis proposes new approaches for modelling contacting interactions and electrostatic interactions between microparticles in the framework of the discrete…
element method and presents a systematic investigation on the agglomeration, migration and deposition of microparticles in presence of electrostatic and flow fields. It reports an exponential-form scaling for the size distribution of early-stage agglomerates in homogeneous isotropic turbulence and formulate the agglomeration and deagglomeration rates. The evolution of spherical clouds of charged particles that migrate under the action of an external electrostatic field is then investigated. Scaling laws of cloud radius and particle number density are obtained by solving a continuum convection equation. Finally, it investigates the deposition of charged particles on a flat plane and fibers. A dimensionless adhesion parameter is constructed to predict the structure of deposits. The temporal evolution of the deposit structure, particle capture efficiency, and the pressure drop are displayed with varying values of Coulomb repulsion and adhesion magnitudes.Introduction to Proteins shows how proteins can be analyzed in multiple ways. The series of volumes, Contemporary Concepts in Physics, is addressed to the professional physicist and to the serious graduate student…
of physics. The subject of many-body systems constitutes a central chapter in the study of quantum mechanics, with applications ranging from elementary particle and condensed matter physics to the behaviour of compact stellar objects. Quantal size effects is one of the most fascinating facets of many-body physics; this is testified to by the developments taking place in the study of metallic clusters, fullerenes, nanophase materials, and atomic nuclei. This book is divided into two main parts: the study of giant resonances based on the atomic nucleus ground state (zero temperature), and the study of the y-decay of giant resonances from compound (finite temperature) nuclei.Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy
Par Per F Dahl. 1999
Heavy water (deuterium oxide) played a sinister role in the race for nuclear energy during the World War II. It…
was a key factor in Germany's bid to harness atomic energy primarily as a source of electric power; its acute shortage was a factor in Japan's decision not to pursue seriously nuclear weaponry; its very existence was a nagging thorn in the side of the Allied powers. Books and films have dwelt on the Allies' efforts to deny the Germans heavy water by military means; however, a history of heavy water has yet to be written.Filling this gap, Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy concentrates on the circumstances whereby Norway became the preeminent producer of heavy water and on the scientific role the rare isotope of hydrogen played in the wartime efforts by the Axis and Allied powers alike. Instead of a purely technical treatise on heavy water, the book describes the social history of the subject. The book covers the discovery and early uses of deuterium before World War II and its large-scale production by Norsk Hydro in Norway, especially under German control. It also discusses the French-German race for the Norwegian heavy-water stocks in 1940 and heavy water's importance for the subsequent German uranium project, including the Allied sabotage and bombing of the Norwegian plants, as well as its lesser role in Allied projects, especially in the United States and Canada. The book concludes with an overall assessment of the importance and the perceived importance of heavy water for the German program, which alone staked everything on heavy water in its quest for a nuclear chain reaction. From Kinetic Theory to Turbulence Modeling: The Legacy of Carlo Cercignani (Springer INdAM Series #51)

Par John Shewey. 2022
The Definitive Book on Spey Flies Within fly tying, and within steelhead and salmon angling, Spey flies occupy a substantial…
niche. These flies are exceptionally popular in America, not only on the &“steelhead coast,&” but nationwide among fly tying enthusiasts, and they enjoy a substantial popularity worldwide; their popularity has gained renewed enthusiasm with the latest generation of young tiers and anglers (the private Facebook page &“The Spey Tyer&” has 3,600 members). The author is the world&’s leading authority on the history and tying of Spey flies simply because they caught his fancy in the 1980s and over the years he has conducted more research on the topic by far than anyone else. His vision for this new incarnation of his original Spey Flies (Amato Publications, 2002) includes a tremendous upgrade from the original—an entirely new book, in fact—because he has uncovered so many historical facts, intrigues, people, and flies that have never been compiled in a single volume, or even presented in any form to the interested audience. The original Spey Flies was graphically rich; the new book is far more so.This present book includes selected papers presented at the 16th International Conference on Electrostatic Precipitation. It presents research shortcomings and…
future orientations in ESP among others, advancements in power supply, modelling, novel applications and new techniques, industrial experience and case studies. Outstanding scientists and engineers worldwide in the field reported their on-going researches. The book is a useful reference for scientists and engineers to keep abreast of the latest developments in environmental science and engineering.Donkey: The Mystique Of Equus Asinus (Animals And Pets Ser.)
Par Michael Tobias, Jane Gray Morrison. 2006
The donkey ("Equus asinus") is both ancient and mysterious and is called by many names: donkey, burro, wild jack, hinny,…
and ass. Donkeys and their relative the mule (a donkey/horse cross) have lived with humans for thousands of years. References to mules date back at least 3,000 years. In the Bible, Genesis 36:24 refers to the "mules in the wilderness." In Homer's Odyssey a mule cart transports Princess Nausicaa to the seashore. Mohammed rode upon a mule into battle. Jesus' family on a donkey during the flight into Egypt was a favorite subject of Renaissance painters. By the time of Don Quixote, the donkey was one of the most beloved animals in all of European literature. In Cervantes, the donkey is stubborn and faithful, loving and intelligent.Bees Are My Business
Par Harry J. Whitcombe, John Scott Douglas. 2018
When Harry Whitcombe was seven years old he persuaded a not very enthusiastic father to let him have a hive…
of bees. From that day on, bees were his business. It was often a precarious business, but it was to prove its worth more than once during the depression, when Whitcombe, still in high school, helped balance the family budget by selling five-gallon cans of honey to a local grocer. Later the sale of his apiary, grown to a hundred colonies, helped pay his way through college. As time went on, Harry Whitcombe found that his real interest lay in the part beekeeping could be made to play in replenishing the soil through pollination of crops. There were many lean years, but Harry Whitcombe persisted, and he became one of the largest shippers of package bees in the world. He was the first man ever to ship bees by plane and his bees were flown all over the United States and Canada and to Europe, India, Korea, Guam and Israel. This heartwarming human success story is told against a background rich in information of vast importance to all of us and of practical value to beekeepers. With amazing clarity the authors describe the science of beekeeping from elementary facts about hives and swarms, to the science of pollination. It is the only book of its kind that relates the story of the beekeeping industry to agriculture. It tells the story of modern commercial beekeeping and vividly describes how bee pollination contributes to man’s dinner table in meat, milk, butter, vegetables and fruits. It explains how the application of insecticides, such as DDT, kills both beneficial as well as injurious insects and how the honey bee has taken over pollination for continued production of many crops.Kurt Gödel: The Genius of Metamathematics (Springer Biographies)
Par William D. Brewer. 2022
During his lifetime, Kurt Gödel was not well known outside the professional world of mathematicians, philosophers and theoretical physicists. Early in…
his career, for his doctoral thesis and then for his Habilitation (Dr.Sci.), he wrote earthshaking articles on the completeness and provability of mathematical-logical systems, upsetting the hypotheses of the most famous mathematicians/philosophers of the time. He later delved into theoretical physics, finding a unique solution to Einstein’s equations for gravity, the ‘Gödel Universe’, and made contributions to philosophy, the guiding theme of his life. This book includes more details about the context of Gödel’s life than are found in earlier biographies, while avoiding an elaborate treatment of his mathematical/scientific/philosophical works, which have been described in great detail in other books. In this way, it makes him and his times more accessible to general readers, and will allow them to appreciate the lasting effects of Gödel’s contributions (the latter in a more up-to-date context than in previous biographies, many of which were written 15–25 years ago). His work spans or is relevant to a wide spectrum of intellectual endeavor, and this is emphasized in the book, with recent examples. This biography also examines possible sources of his unusual personality, which combined mathematical genius with an almost childlike naiveté concerning everyday life, and striking scientific innovations with timidity and hesitancy in practical matters. How he nevertheless had a long and successful career, inspiring many younger scholars along the way, with the help of his loyal wife Adele and some of his friends, is a fascinating story in human nature.
The Worm: The Disgusting Critters Series (Disgusting Critters)
Par Elise Gravel. 2016
A hilarious illustrated non-fiction book about the worm, perfect for beginning readers. The humorous text and funny illustrations will give…
it trade appeal, while the non-fiction content is perfect for the institutional market. The second in a series of humorous books about disgusting creatures, The Worm is a look at the earthworm. It covers such topics as the worm's habitats (sometimes they live inside other animals), its anatomy (its muscle tube is slimy and gross), and its illustrious history (worms have been on earth for 120 million years). Although silly and off-the-wall, The Worm contains real information that will tie in with curriculum.Reflections on Roadkill between Mobility Studies and Animal Studies: Altermobilities
Par Matthew Calarco. 2023
Roadkill is a recurrent but often unthought feature of modern life. Yet, consideration of the broader significance of the myriad…
social, ethical, and political issues related to roadkill has largely gone missing from mainstream scholarship and activism. This neglect persists even in fields such as mobility studies and animal studies that would otherwise seem to have a vested interest in the topic. This book aims to bring roadkill to the foreground of current discussions among scholars and activists in these fields in order to demonstrate that roadkill is a uniquely important site from which to understand and contest the machinations of the dominant social order. It argues that a careful examination of roadkill can help both to uncover the hidden violence of contemporary human-centered systems of mobility and to develop alternative modes of mobility for a renewed social life in common with our more-than-human kin.Veterinary Techniques in Llamas and Alpacas

Par Rachel Lumbis, Tierney Kinnison. 2023
In veterinary practice, the interface between veterinarians, veterinary nurses or technicians, and paraprofessional team members is crucial. It influences patient…
care, incidence of medical errors, client satisfaction, success of the veterinary practice and revenue generation. Ensuring a coherent approach to the maintenance of animal health and wellbeing is of paramount importance, yet challenges such as interprofessional prejudice, misunderstanding of motivations, and a lack of recognition, respect, empowerment or trust, can prevent best practice. Nutrition is one of the most important considerations in the maintenance of health, and plays a critical role in disease management, patient recovery and hospital outcome; a reflection of its recognition as the fifth vital assessment. Owners are increasingly aware of the role of nutrition in optimising pet health, yet considerable misinformation can make this one of the most difficult aspects of pet ownership. Playing a central role as a source of expert information, veterinary healthcare teams must rise to the challenge of optimising pet nutrition. Effective interprofessional communication and collaboration is considered a key factor in the successful implementation of nutritional assessment, and a positive team environment founded on respect, trust and mutual support helps overcome challenges and provide the best outcome for both pets and their owners. This book provides evidence-based theory in an accessible and practical way to help veterinary healthcare teams implement interprofessional approaches to nutritional care and support. In Defence of a Dynamic View of Reality
