Par Lance Cole. 2020
“A comprehensive history of the VC10 . . . enhanced by the fabulous artwork and photographs . . . will…
take you back to the golden age of jet travel.” —Flight Line Book ReviewDesigned and manufactured by the men who would make Concorde, the Rolls-Royce powered Vickers VC10, and its larger variant, the Super VC10, represented the ultimate in 1960s subsonic airliners. The VC10 was Britain’s answer to the Boeing 707 and the Douglas DC-8, but it could take off in a very short distance, climb more steeply, and land at slower speed than its rivals. These were vital safety benefits in the early years of the jet age. At one stage, the Super VC10 was the biggest airliner made in Europe and the fastest in the world. On entry into service, both the VC10 and the longer Super VC10 carved out a niche with passengers who enjoyed the speed, silence and elegance of the airliner. Pilots, meanwhile, loved its ease of flying and extra power. Yet the VC10 project was embroiled in machinations across many years and more than one government. Questions were asked in parliament and the whole story was enmeshed in a political and corporate affair that signified the end of British big airliner production. Yet the men who made the VC10 also went on to design and build Concorde. Many VC10 pilots became Concorde pilots. In service until the 1980s with British Airways, and until 2013 with the RAF, the VC10 became a British icon and a national hero, one only eclipsed by Concorde. It retains a place in the hearts and minds of enthusiasts the world over.“A good one-stop reference to the VC10.” —Scale Aviation Modeller International&“Nobody enjoys the full kaleidoscope of the game quite like Kenny, from banana blades and &’70s staches to air-brushed, mistake-laden…

both classic and new. Being an odd kind of show, Doctor Who&’s locations too are odd. This is no glamorous trip. Dungeness Nuclear Power Station, anyone? A flooded china clay pit in Cornwall? As in his previous memoir Dalek I Loved You, the travel writing is backed up by Nick&’s childhood reminiscences and contemporary musings. rail. After tackling the Great Western Railway’s pannier tanks in a previous Locomotive Portfolios volume, David Maidment seeks out descriptions and photographs of the GW 0-6-2 tank engines, the majority of which were built by the Rhymney, Taff Vale, Barry, and other Welsh railways from the last decade or so of the nineteenth century onward. The engines of eight different companies, absorbed by the GWR in 1922, are described and illustrated, as well as the way in which many were modernized and rebuilt at Swindon or Caerphilly Works in the 1920s. GWR Chief Mechanical Engineer Charles Collett was, however, faced with a motive power crisis in the mining valleys at the Grouping, as many of the companies had economized on essential maintenance as the GW’s takeover drew near, and he had to hurriedly design a standard 0-6-2T to complement and bolster their work as the powerful GW 2-8-0Ts were too heavy and wide for many of the Cardiff valleys. These engines, the 56XX & 66XX classes, became part of the South Wales scene between 1925 and 1964, mainly running the coal traffic between pits and docks, although they dominated Cardiff Valley passenger services until the influx of BR 3MT 2-6-2Ts and GW 41XX 2-6-2Ts in 1954 and 1955. With around 300 black & white photographs, this book takes a wide-ranging look at these locomotives.Baking: Recipes for Cookies, Cupcakes & More (American Girl)

Par John Walter. 2016
A firearms expert &“traces the history of the &‘one hand gun&’ from its 14th century origins . . . surveying changing technology, techniques,…
and design&” (Midwest Book Review). Ideally suited for both attack and self-defense, handguns have gotten smaller and deadlier. But the earliest pistols had a tendency to misfire. This was cured by the cap-lock, which proved a massive success in the American Civil War, with hundreds of thousands of cap-lock revolvers used on each side. Self-contained metal-case cartridges were to bring a fundamental change to handgun design: not only by allowing the introduction of revolvers that ejected automatically or were easily reloaded, but also by paving the way for the automatic pistol. World War I provided the handgun with a proving ground. At the end of the hostilities, with so much surplus weaponry, work on the handgun could have ceased; instead, a new developmental phase was begun by the nations that had emerged from the crumbling Imperial empires. During World War II, the efficiency of well-established designs was confirmed and new designs, such as the Walther P. 38, showed their potential. The emergence of the submachine-gun in 1945 reduced the status of the handgun—but only temporarily. The need for efficient self-defense shows no signs of lessening; and the rise in shooting for sport, particularly with the revolver, has sharpened the quest for efficiency. The never ending search for advanced production techniques shows that the handgun has as much a future in the twenty-first century as it had in the heyday of the Wild West, or in the trenches of Passchendaele.Great Western, 0-6-2 Tank Classes: Absorbed & Swindon Designed Classes (Locomotive Portfolios)

Par John Palmer. 2020
“Sets out to address what really happened . . . through its LNER days and into British Railways custodianship . . . A well-researched and presented…
tome.” —Key Model WorldFor generations of railway enthusiasts and more lately for social historians, the life and times of the former Great Central Railway and in particular its extension towards London in the 1890s and closure seventy years later, have generated considerable interest and controversy.Although many books have been written about the Railway, the majority in recent times have concentrated upon providing a photographic record and a nostalgic look in retrospect to what was generally perceived as happier times for the route.None of the books have presented the outcome from thorough research into the business aspects of the Railway and its successive private (LNER) and public (BR) ownerships through war and peace, and times of industrial, social and political change, that influenced and shaped the demand for a railway service. While retaining a strong railway theme throughout, the book identifies the role played by successive governments, the electricity and coal industries and the effect of social change that, together resulted in a case for closure. The content of the book replaces much supposition with fact and places on record what really happened. The final part of the book acknowledges the fine work over half a century of volunteers dedicated to saving a section of the line in Leicestershire.“A valuable addition to the social and political history of railways.” —The Railway Correspondence and Travel SocietyThe Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway: The Story of a Welsh Rural Byway (Narrow Gauge Railways)

After several failed attempts to connect the market town at Welshpool with the rural community around Llanfair Caereinion, the 1896 Light Railways Act paved the way for the railway which opened in 1902.Operated by the Cambrian Railways and then by the Great Western Railway, it became the only narrow-gauge steam railway catering for goods traffic under the auspices of British Railways. Sadly, it was closed in 1956 but enthusiasts ensured its revival, which started in 1963.Overcoming many obstacles, the railway is now run by a charitable trust and is a leading volunteer-operated tourist attraction in Montgomeryshire.“As is to be expected by the pre-eminent authority on Welsh narrow gauge and minor railways, this is a work of first-class research, but also one of much interest . . .
