Predicting the Future
Par Henry Abarbanel. 2012
Through the development of an exact path integral for use in transferring information from observations to a model of the…
observed system, the author provides a general framework for the discussion of model building and evaluation across disciplines. Through many illustrative examples drawn from models in neuroscience, geosciences, and nonlinear electrical circuits, the concepts are exemplified in detail. Practical numerical methods for approximate evaluations of the path integral are explored, and their use in designing experiments and determining a model's consistency with observations is explored.Pediatric Formulations
Par Daniel Bar-Shalom, Klaus Rose. 2014
Until the 1990s, it was generally accepted that medicines were first developed for adults and their use in children was…
investigated later, if at all. One of the main tasks of hospital pharmacies was the manufacturing of child-appropriate formulations in a more or less makeshift way. The first change came in 1997 with U. S. legislation that rewarded manufacturers to do voluntary pediatric research. Ten years later, the European Union passed legislation that required manufacturers to discuss all pediatric aspects, including formulations, with the regulatory authorities as a condition of starting the registration procedure. In consequence, manufacturers must now cover all age groups, including the youngest ones. So far, pediatric formulations were more a focus for academic researchers. Through the changed regulatory environment, there is now a sudden high commercial demand for age-appropriate formulations. This book begins by highlighting the anatomical, physiological and developmental differences between adults and children of different ages. It goes on to review the existing technologies and attempts to draw a roadmap to better, innovative formulations, in particular for oral administration. The regulatory, clinical, ethical and pharmaceutical framework is also addressed. The Adenosinergic System

field into a practical and accessible reference for the emergency medical technician, student, nurse, resident, and attending emergency physician. Each chapter is divided into four sections: case presentation, discussion, review of the current literature, and recommendations. Designed to serve simultaneously as a learning and reference tool, each chapter begins with a real case that was encountered in an ED setting. The case presentation is followed by a short discussion of the case, as if at a morbidity and mortality conference, by a panel of experienced attending physicians explaining how they would approach the ethical dilemmas associated with the case, and a review of the existing literature.Nutrition, Diet and Cancer
Par Rakesh K. Srivastava, Sharmila Shankar. 2011
Chemoprevention of cancer has been the focus of intensive research for more than two decades. Epidemiological evidence has shown a…
small, but significant association between fruit and vegetable intake and a reduction in cancer risk. Diet may account for about thirty five percent of cancer. Large claims have been made for the effectiveness of particular diets in determining one's risk of developing cancer, ranging from protection against cancer initiation, progression and metastasis. A wide array of dietary components has been demonstrated to be as effective in fighting off cancer. Towards an increased understanding of the nutrition, excercise and diet in preventing cancer or inhibiting its progression has led to the discovery and development of novel and effective drugs that regulate intracellular signaling network in the body. This information will be very useful to explore novel and highly effective chemopreventive strategies for reducing the health burden of cancer. Hippocrates, who proclaimed 25 centuries ago, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food'. They estimated that one third of all cancer cases could be prevented by a healthier diet; statements which are widely accepted in the scientific literature. This book covers the current state-of-the art knowledge on the impact of nutrition and diet with nutrigenetics, nutritional epigenomics, nutritional transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics approach in cancer prevention and therapy.ABC of Interventional Cardiology

Par Monica Frega. 2016
The bookpresents a new, powerful model of neuronal networks, consisting of athree-dimensional neuronal culture in which 3D neuronal networks are…
coupled tomicro-electrode-arrays (MEAs). It discusses the main advantages of thethree-dimensional system compared to its two-dimensional counterpart, and showsthat the network dynamics, recorded during both spontaneous and stimulatedactivity, differs between the two models, with the 3D system being better ableto emulate the in vivo behaviour of neural networks. The book offers anextensive analysis of the system, from the theoretical background, to itsdesign and applications in neuro-pharmacological studies. Moreover, itincludes a concise yet comprehensive introduction to both 2D and 3D neuronalnetworks coupled to MEAs, and discusses the advantages, limitations andchallenges of their applications as cellular and tissue-like in vitro experimental model systems.Rapid Clinical Pharmacology

This evidence-based book, featuring contributions from world-renowned experts, discusses in detail the functional anatomy of the temporomandibular joint as well…
as the aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and medicolegal implications of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Despite advances in our understanding of the aetiology of TMD and in developing current treatment rationales, a number of issues remain controversial. These include the extent to which the temporomandibular joint should be a central focus of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, as well as the role that occlusion and malocclusion play in precipitating TMD symptoms. Indeed, few subjects in dentistry and the specialty of orthodontics are open to as many interpretations or misinterpretations as TMD. This textbook provides clinical orthodontists with essential information and guidance that will assist them in understanding and effectively managing this complex multilayered problem. Throughout, clear clinical guidelines are presented on the basis of current scientific and clinical evidence. TMD and Orthodontics will be a highly valuable chairside resource for orthodontists everywhere.
