NIV, Believe: Living the Story of the Bible to Become Like Jesus
Par Randy Frazee. 2015
It&’s one thing to know the story of the Bible. It&’s another thing to live it.Grounded in carefully selected Scripture, Believe,…
NIV is a unique spiritual growth experience that takes you on a journey to think, act, and be more like Jesus. Pastor Randy Frazee walks you through the ten key beliefs of the Christian faith, the ten key Practices of a Jesus-follower, and the ten key Virtues that characterize someone who is becoming more like Jesus. Every believer needs to ask these three questions: What do I believe? What should I do? Who am I becoming? What you believe in your heart will define who you become. God wants you to become like Jesus - it is the most truthful and powerful way to live - and the journey to becoming like Jesus begins by thinking like Jesus. When you study the life of Jesus you will notice a distinct pattern: Jesus faithfully lived in a purposeful way. Jesus compared the Christian life to a vine. He is the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in the vine of Christ, over time you will produce amazing and scrumptious fruit at the end of your branches for all to see and taste. You become like Jesus. Each chapter uses short topical passages from the New International Version (NIV) to help you live the story of the Bible. As you journey through this Bible, whether in a group or on your own, one simple truth will become undeniably clear: what you believe drives everything.Features:Includes selections from the accurate, readable, and clear New International Version (NIV)Introduction to Biblical Interpretation: 3rd Edition

Par Minnie Vautrin. 2007
In December of 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army marched into China's capital city of Nanjing and launched six weeks of…
carnage that would become known as the Rape of Nanjing. In addition to the deaths of Chinese POWs and civilians, tens of thousands of women were raped, tortured, and killed by Japanese soldiers. In this traumatic environment, both native and foreign-born inhabitants of Nanjing struggled to carry on with their lives. This volume collects the diaries and correspondence of Minnie Vautrin, a farmgirl from Illinois who had dedicated herself to the education of Chinese women at Ginling College in Nanjing. Faced with the impending Japanese attack, she turned the school into a sanctuary for ten thousand women and girls. Vautrin's firsthand accounts of daily life in Nanjing and the intensifying threat of Japanese invasion reveal the courage of the occupants under siege--Chinese nationals as well as Western missionaries, teachers, surgeons and business people--and the personal costs of violence in wartime. Thanks to Vautrin's painstaking effort in keeping a day-to-day account, present-day readers are able to examine this episode of history at close range through her eyes. With detailed maps, photographs, and carefully researched in-depth annotations, Terror in Minnie Vautrin's Nanjing: Diaries and Correspondence, 1937-38 presents a comprehensive and detailed daily account of the events and of life during the horror-stricken days within the city walls and in particular on the Ginling campus. Through chronologically arranged diaries, letters, reports, documents, and telegrams, Vautrin bears witness to those terrible events and to the magnitude of trauma that the Nanjing Massacre exacted on the populace.Sojourner in the Promised Land: Forty Years among the Mormons

Born into the Jehovah's Witnesses in a town in the Scottish Borders, her childhood revolves around regular meetings in the Kingdom Hall, where she is haunted by vivid images of the Second Coming, her mind populated by the bodies that will litter the earth upon Jehovah's return. In this frightening, cloistered world Ali grows older. As she does, she starts to question the ways of the Witnesses, and their control over the most intimate aspects of her life. Par Linn Marie Tonstad. 2016
God and Difference interlaces Christian theology with queer and feminist theory for both critical and constructive ends. Linn Marie Tonstad…
uses queer theory to show certain failures of Christian thinking about God, gender, and sexuality. She employs queer theory to dissect trinitarian discourse and the resonances found in contemporary Christian thought between sexual difference and difference within the trinity. Tonstad critiques a broad swath of prominent Christian theologians who either use queer theory in their work or affirm the validity of same-sex relationships, arguing that their work inadvertently promotes gendered hierarchy. This volume contributes to central debates in Christianity over divine and human personhood, gendered relationality, and the trinity, and provides original accounts of God, sexual difference, and Christian community that are both theologically rich and thoroughly queer.Jesus and Lao Tzu: The Parallel Sayings

Par Edited by David Golding and Christopher Cannon Jones. 2024
In Missionary Interests, David Golding and Christopher Cannon Jones bring together works about Protestant and Mormon missionaries in the nineteenth…
and twentieth centuries, charting new directions for the historical study of these zealous evangelists for their faith. Despite their sectarian differences, both groups of missionaries shared notions of dividing the world categorically along the lines of race, status, and relative exoticism, and both employed humanitarian outreach with designs to proselytize.American missionaries occupied liminal spaces: between proselytizer and proselytized, feminine and masculine, colonizer and colonized. Taken together, the chapters in Missionary Interests dismantle easy characterizations of missions and conversion and offer an overlooked juxtaposition between Mormon and Protestant missionary efforts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book offers a comprehensive overview of neovascular glaucoma (NVG), which is an extraordinarily aggressive type of secondary glaucoma that…
has often been discussed as an afterthought rather than the focal subject in glaucoma reference books. NVG is considered an end stage complication in patients with certain underlying retinal diseases, most commonly diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions. Historically, NVG has been one of the most difficult types of glaucoma to manage, with a high failure rate for traditional glaucoma surgery, and often progression of the underlying retinal disease despite “standard of care” treatment. Chapters cover advancements made in recent years in the management of the underlying ischemic retinal conditions that lead to NVG, including the use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) medications. Additionally, chapters discuss glaucoma surgeries, which have become less invasive in recent years with the advent of microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). This book offers an up-to-date reference regarding current concepts in the diagnosis, as well as medical, laser, and surgical treatment of NVG in the anti-VEGF era, with attention to the close collaboration between glaucoma specialists and retina specialists. Neovascular Glaucoma - Current Concepts in Diagnosis and Treatment will change the way ophthalmologists manage NVG, ensuring patients better outcomes. It is a must-have resource for ophthalmologists worldwide.Prophecy and Politics in the Early Carolingian World (Apocalypse and the Global Middle Ages)
Par Andrew Sorber. 2024
Prophetic and apocalyptic rhetoric play critical roles in the development and articulation of political authority in the reigns of Charlemagne…
(d. 814) and Louis the Pious (d. 840). The rhetorical authority derived from claims of receiving revelation, interpreting divine communication, speaking for God, and foreseeing calamities became a competitive medium through which individuals legitimized political behaviour, debated their long- and short-term aspirations, and struggled for political supremacy. Ranging from claims of revelations, dreams, and visions, to the adoption of rhetorical voices based on biblical prophets, to the interpretation of signs and portents, prophetic rhetoric enjoyed extensive experimentation and varied application throughout early medieval political discourse.Prophecy and Politics in the Early Carolingian World argues that claims of divine revelation, resistant to any attempts to monopolize them, provided a powerful means of speaking with authority for all participants in Frankish political discourse. This authority proved instrumental in the articulation and dismantling of effective Carolingian royal authority from 768 to 840. The volume introduces and reinterprets early Carolingian political discourse and intellectual activity, as well as the centrality of apocalypticism in the Carolingian period, by emphasizing prophecy, or revelation and authority, rather than prediction and calamity.Early Carolingian political discourse was a dialogue that took place across royal proclamations, legal statements, historical texts, visions, scriptural commentaries, and manifestations of the natural world, and in this dialogue, the ability to interpret God’s will was as powerful as it was problematic.Listen, Listen, Speak: Hearing God and Being Heard in a Noisy World

How to recognize the tactics of spiritual abuse—and save your faith Are you questioning the church of your upbringing…
but want to maintain your faith? Do you want to cut ties with your denomination, but fear abandonment by God? Are you struggling with spiritual anxiety—fear of hell, obsessive religious ritual, or feelings of never measuring up? Tiffany Yecke Brooks first explored reconstructing faith in Gaslighted by God. In this much needed follow-up, she equips readers to understand and name tactics of spiritual abuse and manipulation. Each chapter covers a different method of control found in toxic religious communities—including legalism, indoctrination, praise, and fear—and how to identify and respond to it in a healthy way. Weaving together interviews with diverse Christians and her own experience, Brooks offers a voice to those feeling isolated by spiritual anxiety. Empowered by this guide, readers will learn to trust their intuition, seek truth fearlessly, and love God and neighbor without restraint or fear. The story of the origin of Vatican Radio provides a unique look at the history of World War IIThe book…

Par Michael L. Brown. 2011
How long will the church&’s voice be drowned out by the roar of the enemy? After reading this book,…
you will understand the critical issues threatening the spread of the gospel in America, and how you can play a part and no longer be a &“silent lamb&” drowned out by the voices of secularism, liberalism, and pagan thinking in America. If you are a conservative living in America today, there is a target on your back. If you are a Christian conservative, that target is even bigger. If you are a Christian conservative who refuses to bow down to the spirit of the age, the spirit of political correctness, that target is so big that you are a marked man or woman. A person like that—like you!—must be silenced. So says today&’s cultural elite, who are making it increasingly difficult for Christians to stand up and live out their faith. In The Silencing of the Lambs, Dr. Michael L. Brown lays out what is happening in the world around us—from the assault on children in schools and on college campuses to the unprecedented censorship of Christians and conservatives through Big Tech. He then maps out strategies for how we can turn the pitfalls into platforms and find courage in the midst of opposition. The Word of God cannot be bound. The church cannot be cancelled. This book sounds the alarm, alerting Christians to the increasing censorship, opposition, and even persecution believers are facing today, and calls them to remove the muzzle, take their place as the church in this nation, and turn the tide. The Shattered Spectrum: A Survey of Contemporary Theology

The Seven Deadly Sins: Jewish, Christian, and Classical Reflections On Human Psychology
Par Solomon Schimmel. 1997
All of us are engaged in a personal, ongoing battle with sin and vice. The seven deadly sins--lust, greed, envy,…
anger, pride, gluttony, and sloth--are our main antagonists in this struggle. They are primary causes of unhappiness and immorality, and because of their pervasive nature, have been of perennial interest to religious thinkers, philosophers, dramatists, and poets. Although our anger doesn't make most of us murderers, our lust doesn't make most of us rapists, and our greed and envy don't make most of us outright criminals, they, together with gluttony, arrogance, and sloth, often make us, and those who have to live with us, miserable. One need only read the daily paper to see that these seven sins are alive and well, deadlier than ever, spawning violence and suffering, illness and anxiety, loss of meaning, and depression. An arrogant yuppie considers suicide after losing his job on Wall Street, which had been the fragile basis of his false pride. A distinguished senator and a prominent judge destroy their careers and wound their female victims with their lust. Millions of men and women, distraught about their body image, subject themselves to liposuction, breast and hair implants because of their gluttony or vanity. People at the pinnacle of economic power fall into the abyss of prison because they could not control their avarice. In The Seven Deadly Sins, Solomon Schimmel explains why psychology must incorporate many of the ethical and spiritual values of religion and moral philosophy if it is to effectively address the emotional problems faced by modern men and women, be they believers or agnostics. Drawing on the psychological insights of the Bible, Aristotle, Maimonides, Aquinas, and Shakespeare, among others, he shows how all of us can learn from them about the relationship between virtue and psychological well-being and vice and emotional distress. This insightful and fascinating work guides us to master our passions rather than be enslaved by them so that we can become more humane and build a happier, caring society.
