And Now on Radio 4: A Celebration of the World's Best Radio Station
Par Simon Elmes. 2007
And Now on Radio 4 offers an enthusiast's guide to the shows that have made Radio 4 what it is,…
and also explores some of the wonderful corners of the network's history that are long forgotten by all but a few. Who, for instance, now recalls Ronnie Barker's starring role on Radio 4 in a sophisticated cabaret-cum-sketch-show called Lines from My Grandfather's Forehead? What about Spike Milligan's intimate, soul-bearing account of his upbringing in colonial India, Plain Tales from the Raj? And who now remembers that Start the Week was once hosted by Russell Harty, a bit of programming compared by one insider to letting Graham Norton run Newsnight. In order to reflect the way devotees listen to Radio 4, the book is organised not on simple chronological lines but in the form of a typical day. Chapter by chapter, the day evolves, from Farming Today, through the daily feast that is Today, through the morning menu of conversation, Woman's Hour, documentary and comedy. Lunchtime brings The World at One. The early evening, of course, yields The Archers. And finally there's Book at Bedtime and Sailing By.An addictive mix of history, biography, anecdote and occasional useless fact, this is the perfect book for Radio 4 aficionados. All That Is Solid: How the Great Housing Disaster Defines Our Times, and What We Can Do About It
Par Danny Dorling. 2014
Housing was at the heart of the financial collapse, and our economy is now precariously reliant on the housing market.…
In this groundbreaking new book, Danny Dorling argues that housing is the defining issue of our times. Tracing how we got to our current crisis and how housing has come to reflect class and wealth in Britain, All That Is Solid radically shows that the solution to our problems - rising homelessness, a generation priced out of home ownership - is not, as is widely assumed, building more homes. Inequality, he argues, is what we really need to overcome. All That Glitters: The Fall of Barings
Par John Gapper. 1996
The definitive, classic account of the fall of the House of Baring and the ultimate rogue trader Nick Leeson.John Gapper,…
Associate Editor of the Financial Times, and his co-author Nicholas Denton, now founder of Gawker Media, interviewed all the major players involved in the collapse of one of England's oldest banks. All That Glitters reveals the faustian deal struck between the whizz-kid traders who seemed to be bringing in huge profits and the grandies who were happy to pocket them without asking too many questions. For the first time, the actions and motives of all the participants are explained, including the final days when politicians and bankers made a last-ditch attempt to save the bank, as well as Nick Leeson's actions and motives.Adam Smith: An Enlightened Life
Par Nicholas Phillipson. 2010
Adam Smith is celebrated all over the world as the author of The Wealth of Nations and the founder of…
modern economics. A few of his ideas - that of the 'Invisible Hand' of the market and that 'It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest' - have become icons of the modern world. Yet Smith saw himself primarily as a philosopher rather than an economist, and would never have predicted that the ideas for which he is now best known were his most important. This book, by one of the leading scholars of the Scottish Enlightenment, shows the extent to which The Wealth of Nations and Smith's other great work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, were part of a larger scheme to establish a grand 'Science of Man', one of the most ambitious projects of the European Enlightenment, which was to encompass law, history and aesthetics as well as economics and ethics.Nicholas Phillipson reconstructs Smith's intellectual ancestry and formation, of which he gives a radically new and convincing account. He shows what Smith took from, and what he gave to, the rapidly changing and subtly different intellectual and commercial cultures of Glasgow and Edinburgh as they entered the great years of the Scottish Enlightenment. Above all he explains how far Smith's ideas developed in dialogue with those of his closest friend, the other titan of the age, David Hume. This superb biography is now the one book which anyone interested in the founder of economics must read. The Agile Mind: How Your Brain Makes Creativity Happen

answers. The author analyzes (i) what mechanisms exist for fiscal policy and the price level, (ii) whether the MMT proposition that public deficits increase people’s wealth and savings fits into the standard macro model, and (iii) whether Blanchard's assertion that fiscal deficits are net wealth in the US economy can be applied to Japanese economy as well. The propositions of Sims’ FTPL, Kelton's MMT, Japan's Ricardian type argument, and the non-Ricardian type of government by Blanchard have been understood as independent economic perceptions, but they will be theoretically shown as a coherent story. Namely, this study presents a macroeconomic framework that includes the financial sector and derives Sims’ proposition that “fiscal policy can be the sole determinant of the price level.” It also shows that MMT's claim that "budget deficits increase our wealth and collective savings" can inevitably hold within this framework. Furthermore, it presents a model that consistently explains that public debt leads to financial collapse but contributes to economic welfare. This book is an exploration of the entangled spatial relationships with and within organizations and research practice. Situating our environment…
as an active participant in the outcomes of day-to-day living heightens the role space can have as a co-creator of experience, behaviour and emotion. Physical environments tend to fade into the background, becoming an unseen, untended, accompaniment in our journey. However, through active attunement and deep noticing, spatial details arise through our bodies, senses, conversations and physical encounters. As the nature of work continues to evolve, understanding and shifting our relationship with the work environment broadens the scope of how space and work are engaged and performed. This thoughtful book will be of great interest to academics and students of organisational studies, as well as those involved in interdisciplinary research across geography, anthropology and the social sciences.Islamic Finance: New Trends in Law and Regulation (Contributions to Management Science)

Par Carlos Ricardo Soccol, Satinder Kaur Brar, Kugenthiren Permaul, Kannan Pakshirajan, Júlio Cesar de Carvalho. 2024
This book presents an introduction to biohydrogen production and the recent advances and developments of the cleanest biofuel produced from bioresources.…
Biohydrogen has the highest energy content relative to weight and burns cleanly – generating just water. It is the best choice for fuel cells, where it generates electricity directly, in its reaction with oxygen. Biohydrogen occurs naturally as part of digestive gases from mammals and can be produced in specially designed anaerobic biodigesters, or through photocatalysis with microalgae. The gas is also easy to purify and use. The economic production of biohydrogen is still full of challenges: From the efficient and rapid conversion of the substrate to storage, transportation, and safe use, there are several aspects that need to be developed. Research in this field is addressing the issue of efficient large-scale production from several directions: Substrate pretreatment to enhance digestibility, metabolic networks analysis, microbial diversity and succession to highlight constraints in production, bioreactor, and downstream design to improve throughput and reduce costs, to name a few. The ideas and technologies presented in this book contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. The book is written for researchers and students interested in biorefinery and biofuel technologies.Das Buch bietet einen praktischen Leitfaden, wie eine grundlegende strategische und strukturelle Neuausrichtung eines Unternehmens erfolgreich durchgeführt werden kann.
