Toute remise en question est perçue comme une profanation. Ainsi, qui voudrait rejeter les libertés civiles en Angleterre, l'égalité des citoyens en France, le droit de propriété aux États-Unis, ou bien l'égalité des races en Afrique du Sud, ou encore l'égalité homme-femme au Québec ? S'appuyant sur la raison, mais se nourrissant surtout d'émotion et de sacralité, ces valeurs sont devenues intouchables. Par quel chemin y sont-elles arrivées ? En d'autres mots, comment naît un mythe ? Comment accède-t-il à la sacralité ? Comment se diffuse-t-il et assure-t-il sa reproduction ? Comment vient-il à décliner ?
