The Justice Machine
Par Dick Bauch. 2015
Chas Robertson is driven to steal to survive through a severe drought. His crime is witnessed by a police Aboriginal…
tracker and he is charged. Suddenly he is accused of attempting to murder the same witness. If Chas cannot convince the jury of his innocence he faces time in Darlinghurst Gaol. Or worse! Based on a true story, The Justice Machine examines the motivations of the players in the law game. The Magistrate, the Policeman, the Prosecutor, the Barrister and the Judge all have their own reasons for being there. Hardly any of them are to do with justice. The law and justice are different things it seems. The year is 1882 but this could be any time. Injustice is timeless.Lydia

The New Testament tells us very little about Lydia, a seller of purple cloth who was living in Philippi when…
she met the apostle Paul on his second missionary journey. And yet she is considered the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. In her second work of fiction, Biblical scholar and popular author and speaker Paula Gooder tells Lydia's story - who she was, the life she lived and her first-century faith - and in doing so opens up Paul's letter to the Philippians, giving a sense of the cultural and historical pressures that shaped Paul's thinking, and the faith of the early church.Written in the gripping style of Gerd Theissen's The Shadow of the Galilean, and similarly rigorously researched, this is a book for everyone and anyone who wants to engage more deeply and imaginatively with Paul's theology - from one of the UK's foremost New Testament scholars.Lydia

Par Osamu Tezuka. 2006
Osamu Tezuka's vaunted storytelling genius, consummate skill at visual expression, and warm humanity blossom fully in his eight-volume epic of…
Siddhartha's life and times. Tezuka evidences his profound grasp of the subject by contextualizing the Buddha's ideas; the emphasis is on movement, action, emotion, and conflict as the prince Siddhartha runs away from home, travels across India, and questions Hindu practices such as ascetic self-mutilation and caste oppression. Rather than recommend resignation and impassivity, Tezuka's Buddha predicates enlightenment upon recognizing the interconnectedness of life, having compassion for the suffering, and ordering one's life sensibly. Philosophical segments are threaded into interpersonal situations with ground-breaking visual dynamism by an artist who makes sure never to lose his readers' attention. Tezuka himself was a humanist rather than a Buddhist, and his magnum opus is not an attempt at propaganda. Hermann Hesse's novel or Bertolucci's film is comparable in this regard; in fact, Tezuka's approach is slightly irreverent in that it incorporates something that Western commentators often eschew, namely, humor.Buddha, Volume 2: The Four Encounters (Buddha #2)
