Boston Light (Images of America)
Par Sally R. Snowman, James G. Thomson. 2016
On September 14, 1716, Boston Light became the first lighthouse established in Colonial America. With many ships floundering in the…
treacherous waters of the Massachusetts harbor, there was a great need for navigational aid. At night and during storms, it was difficult to discern the entrance to the main shipping channel of Nantasket Roads, situated between the Brewster islands and the town of Hull. The ledges had become a graveyard for ships, resulting in great loss to human life and cargo--a deterrent to European colonization efforts. Ship captains and merchants petitioned the colonial government for a lighthouse to be erected on Little Brewster Island as a way of safe passage to the inner harbor. Three hundred years later, Boston Light continues to serve its purpose. Today, the lighthouse is protected by an ever-present Coast Guard civilian keeper and a cadre of specially trained Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteer assistant keepers.Hit the Road with Moon Travel Guides! From Music City to the Big Easy, cruise through the heart of the South…

Par Ittai Weinryb. 2016
This book presents the first full length study in English of monumental bronzes in the Middle Ages. Taking as its…
point of departure the common medieval reception of bronze sculpture as living or animated, the study closely analyzes the practice of lost wax casting (cire perdue) in western Europe and explores the cultural responses to large scale bronzes in the Middle Ages. Starting with mining, smelting, and the production of alloys, and ending with automata, water clocks and fountains, the book uncovers networks of meaning around which bronze sculptures were produced and consumed. The book is a path-breaking contribution to the study of metalwork in the Middle Ages and to the re-evaluation of medieval art more broadly, presenting an understudied body of work to reconsider what the materials and techniques embodied in public monuments meant to the medieval spectator.Extreme South
Par James Castrission. 2012
On 31 October 2011 James Castrission and Justin Jones set out to achieve 'one of the last great polar adventures'…
- an unsupported return journey from the edge of the Antarctic continent to the South Pole. This is a quest that has been attempted by many experienced polar explorers before them...and all have failed. This book details everything - the preparation, the setbacks, the outset, the highs and the lows - all in brutally honest detail. This expedition is the modern-day equivalent of the exploits of Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton and Castrission and Jones man-hauled a pulk (with 200kg of provisions each), utilising prevailing winds with kites when possible. Why do this? Through realising a childhood dream and committing themselves to a groundbreaking expedition, these two intrepid blokes hope to inspire others to overcome fear and pursue their own adventures and dreams.Places In the Heart: Thirty Prominent Australians Reveal Their Special Corners of the World

Manassas was a sleepy railroad junction before thousands of soldiers arrived to defend the railroad and wage the first major…
land battle of the Civil War. Later, cheap land lured Union veterans and immigrants to Manassas, despite the scarred postwar landscape. Old and new citizens put aside regional differences to build a town, intent on establishing schools, churches, businesses, and utility services, improving the railroad, and remembering the region's role in the war. African Americans established the nationally known Manassas Industrial School, churches, social organizations, and a strong community. The Thrifty Guide to the American Revolution: A Handbook for Time Travelers (The Thrifty Guides #2)

Par Robert Rodi. 2011
Siena seems at first glance a typical Italian city: within its venerable medieval walls the citizens sport designer clothes, wield…
digital phones, and prize their dazzling local cuisine. But unlike neighboring Florence, Siena is still deeply rooted in ancient traditions--chiefly the spectacular Palio, in which seventeen independent societies known as contrade vie for bragging rights in an annual bareback horse race around the central piazza.Into this strange, closed world steps Robert Rodi. A Chicago writer with few friends in town and a shaky command of conversational Italian, he couldn't be more out of place. Yet something about the sense of belonging radiating from the ritual-obsessed Sienese excites him, and draws him back to witness firsthand how their passionate brand of community extends beyond the Palio into the entire calendar year. Smitten, Rodi undertakes a plan to insinuate himself into this body politic, learn their ways, and win their acceptance.Seven Seasons in Siena is the story of Rodi's love affair with the people of Siena--and of his awkward, heartfelt, intermittently successful, occasionally disastrous attempts to become a naturalized member of the Noble Contrada of the Caterpillar. It won't be easy. As one of the locals points out, someone who's American, gay, and a writer is the equivalent of a triple unicorn in this corner of Tuscany. But like a jockey in the Palio outlasting the competition in the home stretch, Rodi is determined to wear down all resistance. By immersing himself in the life of the contrada over seven visits at different times of the year--working in their kitchens, competing in their athletic events, and mastering the tangled politics of their various feuds and alliances--the ultimate outsider slowly begins to find his way into the hearts of this proud and remarkable people.By turns hilarious and heartwarming, and redolent with the flavor of the Tuscan countryside, Seven Seasons in Siena opens a window on daily life in one of the most magical regions in all of Italy--revealing the joys to be found when we stop being spectators and start taking an active part in life's rich pageant. No Friends but the Mountains: Dispatches from the World's Violent Highlands
Par Judith Matloff. 2017

why so many conflicts occur at great heightsMountainous regions are home to only ten percent of the world's population yet host a strikingly disproportionate share of the world's conflicts. Mountains provide a natural refuge for those who want to elude authority, and their remoteness has allowed archaic practices to persist well into our globalized era.As Judith Matloff shows, the result is a combustible mix we in the lowlands cannot afford to ignore. Traveling to conflict zones across the world, she introduces us to Albanian teenagers involved in ancient blood feuds; Mexican peasants hunting down violent poppy growers; and Jihadists who have resisted the Russian military for decades. At every stop, Matloff reminds us that the drugs, terrorism, and instability cascading down the mountainside affect us all.A work of political travel writing in the vein of Ryszard Kapuscinski and Robert Kaplan, No Friends but the Mountains is an indelible portrait of the conflicts that have unexpectedly shaped our world.Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East
Par Gerard Russell. 2014
Despite its reputation for religious intolerance, the Middle East has long sheltered many distinctive and strange faiths: one regards the…
Greek prophets as incarnations of God, another reveres Lucifer in the form of a peacock, and yet another believes that their followers are reincarnated beings who have existed in various forms for thousands of years. These religions represent the last vestiges of the magnificent civilizations in ancient history: Persia, Babylon, Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs. Their followers have learned how to survive foreign attacks and the perils of assimilation. But today, with the Middle East in turmoil, they face greater challenges than ever before. In Heirs to Forgotten Kingdoms, former diplomat Gerard Russell ventures to the distant, nearly impassable regions where these mysterious religions still cling to survival. He lives alongside the Mandaeans and Ezidis of Iraq, the Zoroastrians of Iran, the Copts of Egypt, and others. He learns their histories, participates in their rituals, and comes to understand the threats to their communities. Historically a tolerant faith, Islam has, since the early 20th century, witnessed the rise of militant, extremist sects. This development, along with the rippling effects of Western invasion, now pose existential threats to these minority faiths. And as more and more of their youth flee to the West in search of greater freedoms and job prospects, these religions face the dire possibility of extinction. Drawing on his extensive travels and archival research, Russell provides an essential record of the past, present, and perilous future of these remarkable religions.Moon Montana & Wyoming: Including Yellowstone And Glacier National Parks (Travel Guide Ser.)
