The Deepest Map: The High-Stakes Race to Chart the World's Oceans
Par Laura Trethewey. 2023
A Globe and Mail Top 100 SelectionFive oceans cover approximately seventy per cent of the earth, yet we know little…
of what lies beneath them. Now, the race is on to completely map the oceans’ floor. Scientists, investors, militaries, and private explorers are competing in this epic venture to obtain an accurate reading of this vast terrain and understand its contours and environment. In The Deepest Map, Laura Trethewey chronicles this race to the bottom. Following global efforts around the world, she documents Inuit-led crowdsourced mapping in the Arctic as climate change alters the landscape, a Texas millionaire’s efforts to become the first man to dive to the deepest point in each ocean, and the increasingly fraught question of whether and how to mine the deep sea. A true tale of science, nature, technology, and extreme outdoor adventure, The Deepest Map both illuminates why we love — and fear — the earth’s final frontier and contributes to increasingly urgent conversations about climate change.A Bucket of Stars
Par Suri Rosen. 2023
A story of two kids trying to save the world they know and heal the families they have. It’s the summer…
of 2003 and thirteen-year-old astronomer Noah Cooper has just moved to Queensport, a small town with a vast amateur sky full of stars. There he meets Tara Dhillon, a lonely girl and aspiring filmmaker. When the two team up to produce an astronomy movie and enter a film contest, they discover a secret plan to turn their rural hamlet into a huge subdivision.Noah and Tara must use their unique skills to identify the culprits who plan on paving over the historic county — and try to save the infinite beauty of the stars. As if that’s not enough to have at stake, Noah needs to win the prize money to buy a new telescope for his unemployed father — an ex-astronomer who’s almost given up on the stars, as well as life on earth.Touching on themes of activism, environmental anxiety and mental health, A Bucket of Stars will have readers cheering for Noah, a boy whose head is in the stars, and Tara, a girl who lives in a world of digital images — and their special bond that just might mend the world around them.See It, Dream It, Do It: How 25 people just like you found their dream jobs

Par Joanna Frueh. 2023
The erotic and the intellectual come together to create a new kind of criticism in the lushly written work of…
Joanna Frueh. Addressing sexuality in ways that are usually hidden or left unsaid, Frueh—a noted performance artist and art historian—explores subjects such as aging, beauty, love, sex, pleasure, contemporary art, and the body as a site and vehicle of knowledge. Frueh's language is explicit, graphic, fragmented. She assumes multiple voices: those of lover, prophet, daughter, mythmaker, art critic, activist, and bleeding heart. What results is an utterly original narrative that frees us from the false objectivity of traditional critical discourse and affirms the erotic as a way to ease human suffering. Through personal reflection, parody, autobiography, and poetry, Frueh shows us what it means to perform criticism, to personalize critical thinking. Rejecting postmodern, deconstructed prose, she recuperates the sentimental, proudly asserts a romantic viewpoint, and disrupts academic and feminist conventions. Erotic Faculties seeks to free the power of our unutilized erotic faculties and to expand the possibilities of criticism; it is a wild ride and a consummate pleasure. Par Percy H. Brill. 2023
Introduction to Stochastic Level Crossing Techniques describes stochastic models and their analysis using the System Point Level Crossing method (abbreviated…
SPLC or LC). This involves deriving probability density functions (pdfs) or cumulative probability distribution functions (cdfs) of key random variables, applying simple level-crossing limit theorems developed by the author. The pdfs and/or cdfs are used to specify operational characteristics about the stochastic model of interest. The chapters describe distinct stochastic models and associated key random variables in the models. For each model, a figure of a typical sample path (realization, i.e., tracing over time) of the key random variable is displayed. For each model, an analytic (Volterra) integral equation for the stationary pdf of the key random variable is created−by inspection of the sample path, using the simple LC limit theorems. This LC method bypasses a great deal of algebra, usually required by other methods of analysis. The integral equations will be solved directly, or computationally. This book is meant for students of mathematics, management science, engineering, natural sciences, and researchers who use applied probability. It will also be useful to technical workers in a range of professions. Key Features: A description of one representative stochastic model (e.g., a single-server M/G/1 queue; a multiple server M/M/c queue; an inventory system; etc.) Construction of a typical sample path of the key random variable of interest (e.g., the virtual waiting time or workload in queues; the net on-hand inventory in inventory systems; etc.) Statements of the simple LC theorems, which connect the sample-path upcrossing and downcrossing rates across state-space levels, to simple mathematical functions of the stationary pdf of the key random variable, at those state-space levels Creation of (usually Volterra) integral equations for the stationary pdf of the key random variable, by inspection of the sample path Direct analytic solution of the integral equations, where feasible; or, computational solutions of the integral equations Use of the derived stationary pdfs for obtaining operational characteristics of the modelThe Peasant Marketing System of Oaxaca, Mexico

Understanding (TRU) Framework to improve instruction. Detailed case studies take readers on deep dives into five essential dimensions of classroom practice: The Mathematics; Cognitive Demand; Equitable Access; Agency, Ownership, and Identity; and Formative Assessment. Three case studies form the core of the book. Each case uses the TRU framework to pose conversational questions to the reader on different aspects of the lessons, focusing on the ways that students are led to engage with mathematics and how they make sense of it. These include “What’s important in this classroom episode?,” “What might students be experiencing?,” or “What might the impact of alternative teaching decisions have been in this situation?”. The book concludes with guides for planning, observation, and reflection that readers can use in their own work, continuing the journey toward the ambitious and equitable instruction that each case study describes. This book will support all mathematics educators in developing deeper understandings of mathematics classrooms and in problematizing their own mathematics instruction. By exploring the challenges students face, the decisions teachers make, and the ways that students learn, readers will experience TRU as a powerful way of thinking about instruction – one that can shape lesson planning and reflection and make teaching more impactful and equitable. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out…

Par Antonio Herrera, Francisco Acosta. 2024
Focusing on the processes of political socialisation and democratisation that took place in Spain during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries,…
this book brings together specialists who propose the need to rethink the contemporary history of democracy in Spain to build a new narrative. To do so, the authors go down to the local level, where they are able to trace a political culture that forged the foundations of a process of political "modernization" much more complex than what conventional historiography has conveyed, even though it was not always transferred institutionally to the national level. The idea of a rural Spain that was backward, apolitical, violent and unprepared for democracy gives way to a more interesting history which, while recognising the peculiarities of the country and the important limitations to democracy, shows examples that could help build a new narrative closer those of other neighbouring countries. Aimed at contemporary historians interested in Spain and Europe, the book also addresses the debates faced by other social scientists on the concept of democracy. This dialogue between history, sociology and political science is particularly present in a special final chapter featuring a discussion of democracy and its application to Spanish history.Science and Morality in Medicine: A Survey of Medical Educators
