Retirement Income Redesigned: Master Plans for Distribution -- An Adviser's Guide for Funding Boomers' Best Years
Par Walter Updegrave, Katz, Harold Evensky, Deena B.. 2006
Clients nearing retirement have some significant challenges to face. And so do their advisers. They can expect to live far…
longer after they retire. And the problems they expect their advisers to solve are far more complex. The traditional sources of retirement income may be shriveling, but boomers don't intend to downsize their plans. Instead, they're redefining what it means to be retired--as well as what they require of financial advisers. Planners who aren't prepared will be left behind. Those who are will step up to some lucrative and challenging work. To help get the work done, Harold Evensky and Deena Katz--both veteran problem solvers--have tapped the talents of a range of experts whose breakthrough thinking offers solutions to even the thorniest issues in retirement-income planning: Sustainable withdrawals Longevity risk Eliminating luck as a factor in planning Immediate annuities, reverse mortgages, and viatical and life settlements Strategies for increasing retirement cash flow In Retirement Income Redesigned, the most-respected names in the industry discuss these issues and a range of others. This book approaches the concept of adjustment to aging and endeavors to build reader understanding of this construct through a…

Par Tracie Miller. 2012
In just under three decades, the world has witnessed an enormous rise in obesity with a parallel growth in cardiometabolic…
disease risk factors characterized by insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, together known as the metabolic syndrome - conditions previously unheard of in children and adolescents. During this time, we have little knowledge of the global and cumulative detrimental health effects of childhood obesity. As obese children age, not only will their health be negatively affected, but infertility and pregnancy complications associated with the metabolic syndrome will affect generations to come. The work force will undoubtedly be affected because of increased sick days and decreased work productivity. Identifying children and adolescents at the earliest stages of chronic disease onset should be the goal of clinical practice, yet there is no clear guidance for defining the risk of metabolic syndrome or appropriate risk-factor thresholds in these groups. If children are identified early in the disease process, lifestyle and clinical interventions can be instituted when they are potentially more effective. Pediatric Metabolic Syndrome: Comprehensive Clinical Review and Related Health Issues approaches the pediatric metabolic syndrome by elucidating its effects on specific organ systems and by considering the problem through understanding the social, psychological and economic consequences of it. The Editors have recruited an invited group of esteemed experts in the field to provide the most timely and informative approaches on how to deal with this health crisis. Through educating our practitioners, our future researchers, our health and community organizations, our legislators and our families and children, we have the best chance at improving the health trajectory of the next generation. What Does It Mean to Grow Old?: Reflections from the Humanities

Par John P. Neoptolemos, Markus W. Büchler, Raul A. Urrutia, James Abbruzzese. 2010
Worldwide, there are an estimated 232, 000 new cases of pancreatic cancer annually. In the United States, it is the…
fourth leading cause of cancer death, and approximately 30,000 people die of pancreatic cancer each year. The disease is difficult to diagnose in its early stages, and most patients have incurable disease by the time they present with symptoms. The overall 5-year survival rate for this disease is less than 5%. In organizing this handbook, Dr. Neoptolemos and his co-editors will produce a distinguished Major Reference Work devoted to pancreatic cancer. This handbook will have widespread appeal among clinicians, pathologists and basic scientists who are now struggling to understand this complex and rapidly expanding field. Because of the recent and vast growth in both the clinical and scientific research being done in pancreatic cancer (there is currently an unprecedented investment by academia and industry in this field), each researcher’s knowledge of other specialty areas outside his or her own is now often quite limited. The aim of this book is to place these the tangible advances—those that are indispensable to all working on pancreatic cancer—readily at hand. The book will focus on advances that will not become dated, and the editors will choose authors who are the very best in each area.Diabetes und Schwangerschaft

Par John Macnicol. 2015
Governments are encouraging later-life working and state pension ages are being raised. There is also a growing debate on intergenerational…
equity and on ageism/age discrimination. John Macnicol, one of Europe's leading academic analysts of old age and ageing, examines the effect of neoliberalism on the recent ageing and social policy agenda in the UK and the USA. He argues that the demographic and economic impulses behind recent policy changes are in fact less important than the effect of neoliberalism as an ideology, which has caused certain key problems to be defined in a particular way. The book outlines past theories of old age and examines pensions reform, the debate on life expectancy gains, the causes of retirement, the idea of intergenerational equity, the current debate on ageism/age discrimination and the likely human consequences of raising state pension ages.Sex Hormones and Immunity to Infection
Par Craig Roberts, Sabra L. Klein. 2010
Why sex matters Among human and nonhuman animals, the prevalence and intensity of infection typically is higher in males than…
females and may reflect differences in exposure as well as susceptibility to pathogens. Elevated immunity among females is a double-edged sword in which it is beneficial against infectious diseases but is detrimental in terms of increased development of autoimmune diseases. The present book critically reviews the evolutionary origin and the functional mechanisms responsible for sexual dimorphism in response to infection. It emphasizes the value of examining responses in both males and females to improve our understanding about host-pathogen interactions in both sexes. The contributors are experts in their specific disciplines which range from microbiology and immunology to genetics, pathology, and evolutionary biology. The book aims at bringing insight to the treatment and management of infectious diseases; it delineates areas where knowledge is lacking and highlights future avenues of research.Sperm Chromatin
Par Ashok Agarwal, Armand Zini. 2011
Sperm DNA damage is common and has been associated with reduced rates of conception, impaired embryonic development and increased risk…
of miscarriage. Although the exact causes of sperm DNA damage are unknown, it is clear that infertile men possess substantially higher levels of sperm DNA damage than do fertile men. Written by leading, internationally renowned clinicians and basic scientists with expertise in sperm DNA, Sperm Chromatin: Biological and Clinical Applications in Male Infertility and Assisted Reproduction provides readers with a thoughtful and comprehensive review of the biological and clinical significance of sperm DNA damage. The work covers the fundamental principles of sperm chromatin architecture and function, the proposed modes of DNA damage and repair, the tests of sperm DNA damage, the clinical aspects of DNA damage and the impact of DNA damage on reproductive outcome. Unlike any other title on the topic, Sperm Chromatin: Biological and Clinical Applications in Male Infertility and Assisted Reproduction is an invaluable addition to the literature and will serve as an indispensable resource for basic scientists with an interest in sperm biology and for urologists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists, and embryologists working in the field of infertility. The Well-Being of the Elderly in Asia: A Four-Country Comparative Study
Par Albert I. Hermalin. 2002
The past two decades have witnessed rapid social, economic, and demographic change in East and South-East Asia. The older populations…
in these regions have been increasing faster than in the West, and the proportions of people over sixty will more than double over the next thirty years. Increased urbanization and educational levels and a strong shift to professional, technical, manufacturing, and service occupations are changing the social and economic landscape, leading to concern for the well-being of the elderly, who traditionally have relied on the family for support. Governments are attempting to preserve these traditions while taking into account widespread family change and new expectations for pension, health insurance, and other public programs. The contributors to this volume use survey and other data collected over ten years to examine the well-being of the current older population in four Asian countries: The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. Each major analytic chapter looks at a key dimension of well-being--economic, physical and mental health, work and leisure--and how these are affected by the familial and social support arrangements, as well as age, gender, education, and urban-rural residence. Where possible, changes over time are traced. Explicit attention is given to the policies and programs in place and under development in each country and to the cultural accommodations underway. The contributors also look ahead to the implications of the large numbers of elderly with very different characteristics who will predominate in the coming years and to the policy implications of this coming transformation. The book will be important for scholars and policymakers whose work involves population in Asia, including demographers, sociologists, and economists.Economic Foundations for Creative Ageing Policy, Volume II
Par Andrzej Klimczuk. 2017
Aging populations are a major consideration for socio-economic development in the early 21st century. This demographic change is mainly seen…
as a threat rather than as an opportunity to improve the quality of human life. Aging population is taking place in every continent of the world with Europe in the least favourable situation due to its aging population and reduction in economic competitiveness. Economic Foundations for Creative Aging Policy offers public policy ideas to construct positive answers for ageing populations. This exciting new volume searches for economic solutions that can enable effective social policy concerning the elderly. Klimczuk covers theoretical analysis and case study descriptions of good practices, to suggest strategies that could be internationally popularised.Diabetes Mellitus in Developing Countries and Underserved Communities
Par Sam Dagogo-Jack. 2017
Adopting a truly global perspective and a practical approach to diabetes--including pathophysiology, genetics, regional peculiarities, management, prevention and best practices--this…
book is an excellent resource for clinicians and policy-makers working with patients in more austere settings. The global prevalence of diabetes is estimated to increase from 422 million in 2014 to 592 million in 2035. Sadly, low- and middle-economy countries are projected to experience the steepest increase, but even in developed economies, vulnerable demographic subgroups manifest disparities in diabetes prevalence, quality of care, and outcomes. This book extends coverage to those underserved and minority communities in the developed world. In a consistent chapter format, it discusses classification, pathophysiology, genomics, diagnosis, prevention and management of diabetes in economically challenged regions as well as underserved populations in affluent nations. Suggestions regarding future directions in the organization of diabetes care delivery, prevention and research priorities are also provided. The detailed identification of barriers to optimal care and the practical approach to the management and prevention of diabetes make Diabetes Mellitus in Developing Countries and Underserved Communities a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers and health policy leaders.Normal Aging II: Reports from the Duke Longitudinal Studies, 1970–1973

This timely volume addresses the intimate pathophysiologic relationship between hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is one of the most important…
global public health challenges, and its relationship to stroke and other catastrophic cerebrovascular diseases is an area of growing understanding. In this outstanding book, the editors and authors clearly and concisely synthesize our developing knowledge and place epidemiologic and physiologic information into a practical clinical context. Comprehensive chapters present the evidence supporting strategies for stroke prevention and care, including blood pressure lowering therapies, anti-coagulation, and management of other cerebrovascular risk factors. In addition to prescriptive measures for first stroke prevention, the book illuminates current regimens for care immediately after acute stroke and for the prevention of recurrent stroke. A unique section is dedicated to the exploration of the interaction between elevated blood pressure and brain function and cognition. The concluding chapter provides a resource towards optimizing the organization of stroke care. Hypertension and Stroke is of great utility for specialists in neurology and cardiovascular medicine and a valuable practical resource for all physicians caring for older adults and hypertensive patients.Normal Aging III: Reports from the Duke Longitudinal Studies, 1975–1984
