in children in the United States and the developed world. Vision and the Brain is a unique and comprehensive sourcebook geared especially to professionals in the field of visual impairment, educators, and families who need to know more about the causes and types of CVI and the best practices for working with affected children. Expert contributors from many countries represent education, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility, ophthalmology, optometry, neuropsychology, psychology, and vision science, and include parents of children with CVI. The book provides an in-depth guide to current knowledge about brain-related vision loss in an accessible form to enable readers to recognize, understand, and assess the behavioral manifestations of damage to the visual brain and develop effective interventions based on identification of the spectrum of individual needs. Chapters are designed to help those working with children with CVI ascertain the nature and degree of visual impairment in each child, so that they can "see" and appreciate the world through the child's eyes and ensure that every child is served appropriately.Lasers in Dermatology and Medicine: Dental and Medical Applications

planning, including the potential need to perform individual procedures at different time points, each stage of the vitrectomy is clearly documented with the aid of color photographs and drawings as well as online surgical videos. Variations in approach are described that are potentially of value, depending on whether one is dealing with a straightforward diabetic retinopathy or a difficult case of tractional retinal detachment. In the second part of the book, a series of case reports are presented that illustrate the surgical procedures applicable in different circumstances. In addition, pearls and pitfalls are highlighted. Small-Gauge Vitrectomy for Diabetic Retinopathy will be an ideal source of information and guidance for all who are embarking upon such surgery or wish to further hone their skills.Informing Social Security’s Process for Financial Capability Determination
Par Engineering, Medicine, National Academies of Sciences. 2016
The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides benefits to disabled adults and children, offering vital financial support to more than…
19 million disabled Americans. Of that group, approximately 5.5 million have been deemed – by virtue of youth or mental or physical impairment - incapable of managing or directing the management of their benefits. Hence, a representative payee has been appointed to receive and disburse SSA payments for these beneficiaries to ensure that their basic needs for shelter, food, and clothing are met. Periodically, however, concerns have been expressed about the accuracy of the process by which SSA determines whether beneficiaries are capable of managing their benefits, with some evidence suggesting that underdetection of incapable recipients may be a particular problem. The importance of creating as accurate a process as possible for incapability determinations is underscored by the consequences of incorrectly identifying recipients either as incapable when they can manage their benefits or as capable when they cannot. Failure to identify beneficiaries who are incapable of managing their funds means abandoning a vulnerable population to potential homelessness, hunger, and disease. Informing Social Security’s Process for Financial Capability Determination considers capability determination processes used by other similar benefit programs, abilities required to manage, and direct the management of, benefits, and effective methods and measures for assessing capability. This report evaluates SSA’s capability determination process for adult beneficiaries and provides recommendations for improving the accuracy and efficiency of the agency’s policy and procedures for making these determinations.Digital Teleretinal Screening
Par Kanagasingam Yogesan, Leonard Goldschmidt, Jorge Cuadros. 2011
Digital retinal imaging performed by primary care providers and nurses, followed by remote image interpretation (teleretinal imaging), is rapidly acquiring…
a crucial role in many parts of the world as it permits the detection of major diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, in patients who would otherwise be beyond the reach of a trained ophthalmologist. In this book, experts from around the world describe how digital teleretinal screening can be set up and optimally utilized. Technical issues are discussed, and the appropriate use of screening for different diseases and in different age groups is explained. The major part of the book draws upon the clinical experience of leading practitioners in a wide range of teleretinal applications. The result is a comprehensive source of high-quality information for clinicians and other health professionals who are involved in eye care delivery, so that they can assess how teleretinal screening might be applied to their working practice.Digital Teleretinal Screening

Par Uwe Pleyer, Jorge L. Alió, Talin Barisani-Asenbauer, Phuc Le Hoang, Narsing A. Rao. 2014
These guidelines, compiled by a panel of clinicians and scientists with a high level of expertise, aim to provide readers…
with the most up-to-date and comprehensive instructions on the treatment and prevention of ocular inflammation. All of the recommendations are explicitly linked to supporting evidence and graded according to the strength of that evidence and the editors have made every effort to ensure that chapters are of a consistently high methodological quality. The guidelines for each treatment include dose and the frequency and mode of delivery. Significant side-effects of treatment are identified and distinguished from those of the disease in question. Suggestions are presented for the prevention both of the disease itself and of the treatment-related complications. In addition, likely future directions in treatment and prevention are identified. These guidelines will be of great practical value for all clinicians and clinical scientists with an interest in the subject.Gonioscopy
Par Christoph Faschinger, Anton Hommer. 2011
Gonioscopy is a very important differential diagnostic tool that permits assessment of the anterior chamber angle and correct classification of…
glaucoma as a basis for specific treatment. This book clearly explains how to perform gonioscopy to best effect. The anatomy of the chamber angle is systematically described, and the impact of age, developmental disorders, and other pathologies on the chamber angle is explained. Particular attention is focused on primary and secondary open-angle and angle-closure glaucomas. In each case, the role of gonioscopy in evaluating the chamber angle is described with the help of many photographs and illustrations. The importance of knowledge of the chamber angle for laser treatment and surgery is fully explained, and the impact of medications is discussed. The practitioner will find in Gonioscopy all the information required to use the technique effectively in diagnosis and treatment. The Eye in Pediatric Systemic Disease

Par Robert-Michael Kaplan. 1976
Good vision is more than the ability to see 20/20 on an eye chart. Any vision problem is a message…
alerting us to an unbalanced inner state. Eyeglasses, medications, and surgery may correct poor vision but they cannot correct this inner imbalance. In The Power Behind Your Eyes, Robert-Michael Kaplan presents Integrated Vision Therapy a comprehensive daily program that can actually improve as well as treat the inner causes of poor vision. More comprehensive than other vision care techniques, Integrated Vision Therapy takes a holistic approach to identifying the causes of vision problems and developing noninvasive, natural strategies for treatment, including clear, easy-to-follow exercises, diets, and changes in daily habits.Seeing Through New Eyes: Changing the Lives of Children with Autism, Asperger Syndrome and other Developmental Disabilities Through Vision Therapy
Par Stephen Edelson, Melvin Kaplan. 2006
Seeing Through New Eyes offers an accessible introduction to the treatment of visual dysfunction, a significant but neglected problem associated…
with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Kaplan identifies common ASD symptoms such as hand-flapping, poor eye contact and tantrums as typical responses to the confusion caused by vision disorder. He also explains the effects of difficulties that people with autism experience with "ambient vision", including a lack of spatial awareness and trouble with coordination. Other chapters give guidance on how to identify the visual deficits of nonverbal children, select prism lenses that will alter the visual field, and create individually tailored programs of therapy in order to retrain the system. This book is essential reading for parents of children with ASDs, and professionals in the fields of autism, optometry and ophthalmology, psychology and education.Functional Ophthalmic Disorders
