Upstream: The Quest to Solve Problems Before They Happen
Par Dan Heath. 2020
New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath explores how to prevent problems before they happen, drawing on insights from hundreds…
of interviews with unconventional problem solvers. So often in life, we get stuck in a cycle of response. We put out fires. We deal with emergencies. We stay downstream, handling one problem after another, but we never make our way upstream to fix the systems that caused the problems. Cops chase robbers, doctors treat patients with chronic illnesses, and call-center reps address customer complaints. But many crimes, chronic illnesses, and customer complaints are preventable. So why do our efforts skew so heavily toward reaction rather than prevention? Upstream probes the psychological forces that push us downstream—including &“problem blindness,&” which can leave us oblivious to serious problems in our midst. And Heath introduces us to the thinkers who have overcome these obstacles and scored massive victories by switching to an upstream mindset. One online travel website prevented twenty million customer service calls every year by making some simple tweaks to its booking system. A major urban school district cut its dropout rate in half after it figured out that it could predict which students would drop out—as early as the ninth grade. A European nation almost eliminated teenage alcohol and drug abuse by deliberately changing the nation&’s culture. And one EMS system accelerated the emergency-response time of its ambulances by using data to predict where 911 calls would emerge—and forward-deploying its ambulances to stand by in those areas. Upstream delivers practical solutions for preventing problems rather than reacting to them. How many problems in our lives and in society are we tolerating simply because we&’ve forgotten that we can fix them?
The Ethics of Opting Out: Queer Theory's Defiant Subjects
Par Mari Ruti. 2017
In The Ethics of Opting Out, Mari Ruti provides an accessible yet theoretically rigorous account of the ideological divisions that…
have animated queer theory during the last decade, paying particular attention to the field's rejection of dominant neoliberal narratives of success, cheerfulness, and self-actualization. More specifically, she focuses on queer negativity in the work of Lee Edelman, Jack Halberstam, and Lynne Huffer, and on the rhetoric of bad feelings found in the work of Sara Ahmed, Lauren Berlant, David Eng, Heather Love, and José Muñoz. Ruti highlights the ways in which queer theory's desire to opt out of normative society rewrites ethical theory and practice in genuinely innovative ways at the same time as she resists turning antinormativity into a new norm. This wide-ranging and thoughtful book maps the parameters of contemporary queer theory in order to rethink the foundational assumptions of the field.
Reimagining Research: Engaging Data, Research, and Program Evaluation in Social Justice Counseling
Par Trevor J. Buser, Sandy Gibson. 2023
Reimagining Research centers antiracist research practices and showcases real-world research in counseling practice. The book focuses on the research competencies…
that matter most to counselors, with each chapter co-authored by practicing counselors and counselor educators. Each chapter reflects diversity in authorship and opens with a "potential for practice" case study that illustrates a research-related challenge in the practice of counseling. Online resources—including a focus group interview, sample transcripts of qualitative interviews, video demonstrations of statistical techniques, and other documents used in research processes—present these "potentials for practice" in experiential ways. Chapters close with attention to resources that are readily available for counselors who want to implement these practices, such as evidence-based practice guidelines, open-access journals, and open-access statistical tools.
Developmental Trauma: Theory, Research and Practice
Par Daniel Cruz. 2023
Developmental Trauma offers a comprehensive introduction to the research findings that help us understand the effects on human development of…
early childhood trauma and adaptation to stress. It explains how DTD differs from PTSD and emerges from a toxic seed planted at the beginning of an individual’s lifespan development. This important volume examines relational traumas and adverse childhood experiences, such as exposure to family and community violence, polyvictimization (multiple repeated childhood traumas), and disruptions to parent-child bonds, which lay the foundation for future relationships. The volume considers how DTD affects self-regulation capacities, identity development, self-esteem, and faith in oneself and others and increases the likelihood of comorbidities including ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Individuals with indications of developmental trauma face lifelong challenges in their ability to develop and maintain trusting relationships, to build and utilize healthy coping strategies, and to adjust to school and, eventually, the workplace. Uniquely, Daniel Cruz goes beyond individual levels of analysis that focus almost exclusively on patients and explores toxic stress embedded in social systems and institutional policies and procedures that cause individuals to suffer, experience psychiatric and medical problems, and that lead to social and economic adversities such as poverty, homelessness, and involvement in criminal activity. Key topics explored include institutional betrayal, such as sexual assaults and workplace bullying, and judicial betrayal when failures from the legal system do not adequately protect victims of trauma, for example in cases of domestic violence. Developmental Trauma is for students of child and adolescent psychology, developmental psychology, clinical psychology, primary care and health psychology, education, social work, and urban studies. It is relevant for graduate students in applied fields such as clinical and counseling psychology, and those working with diverse children as well as public health and policy.
The New Heroines in Film and Television: Post-Jungian Perspectives on Contemporary Female Characters
Par Helena Bassil-Morozow. 2023
This thought-provoking volume offers an overview of contemporary representations of prominent female characters as they appear in an array of…
moving-image narratives from a Jungian and post-Jungian perspective. Applying a theoretical frame that is richly informed by the Jungian and post-Jungian concepts of persona, individuation, and archetypes, works including Fleabag (2016-2019), Ladybird (2017), and The Queen’s Gambit (2020) as well as Disney productions such as Brave (2012), Moana (2016), and Frozen (2013), are contextualized and discussed alongside their non-screen precedents and contemporaries, including myths, fairy tales, and works of literature, to closely examine new patterns of the female journey. This book identifies how young female characters rebel against the female persona of previous eras through the trickster, the shadow, and other archetypes, comparing the contemporary female protagonist with her predecessors to assess the new paths, roles, and milestones available to her. Examining the construction of the female persona across time periods and mediums in an accessibly written yet academic style, this book is the first of its kind. With a fulsome account of the progressive developments in entertainment media and Jungian thought, this book is essential reading for students and scholars of film, as well as anyone with an interest in analytical psychology and wider feminist issues in contemporary culture.
An Emotionally Focused Workbook for Relationship Loss: Healing Heartbreak Session By Session
Par Kathryn D Rheem, Clare Rosoman. 2023

to support them in navigating and managing the pain of breakups. Politics, Lies and Conspiracy Theories: A Cognitive Linguistic Perspective
Par Marcel Danesi. 2023
Politics, Lies and Conspiracy Theories: A Cognitive Linguistic Perspective shows how language influences mechanisms of cognition, perception, and belief, and…
by extension its power to manipulate thoughts and beliefs. This exciting and original work is the first to apply cognitive linguistics to the analysis of political lies and conspiracy theories, both of which have flourished in the internet age and which many argue are threatening democracy. It unravels the verbal mechanisms that make these "different truths" so effective and proliferative, dissecting the verbal structures (metaphor, irony, connotative implications, etc.) of a variety of real-life cases concerning politicians, conspiracy theorists, and influencers. Marcel Danesi goes on to demonstrate how these linguistic structures "switch on" or "switch off" alternative mind worlds. This book is essential reading for students of cognitive linguistics and will enrich the studies of any student or researcher in language and linguistics more broadly, as well as discourse analysis, rhetoric, or political science.
Global Research Ethics: Case Studies from International Research Contexts
Par Caren J. Frost, Lisa H. Gren, L. Scott Benson, Margaret Carlson. 2021
Global Research Ethics is a guide for students and their instructors as well as practitioners and researchers to understand topics…
linked to research ethics from a more global perspective. Research plays a key role in identifying health disparity trends and evaluating interventions to improve the health and well-being of the populations at the individual, local, national, and global levels. Conducting ethically sound research is imperative in these contexts. This book (a) uses case studies to offer examples of current research ethical dilemmas and (b) considers regulatory and cultural frameworks in a number of country contexts that highlight diverse methods of identifying and managing these ethical dilemmas. Chapters cover different types (groups) of participants, issues in research, and ways of doing research; then each chapter looks at least three exemplar case studies with at least two analytical commentaries. Case studies include health and social care research, and originate from countries such as Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Botswana, Australia and New Zealand, as well as the U.S. and U.K. The different viewpoints showcased will allow for dialogue to ensue about the ways in which populations and topics in research need to be conceptualized. Global Research Ethics is suitable for all undergraduates and postgraduates on research methods courses in the social and health sciences. It provides academic researchers, students, and community partners with guidelines to reflect on as they develop their own research studies.

World of the Third and Hegemonic Capital: Between Marx and Freud (Marx, Engels, and Marxisms)
Par Anjan Chakrabarti, Anup Dhar. 2023
This book brings together Marxian philosophy and Lacanian psychoanalysis to argue that the hegemonic form of global capital is founded…
on the foreclosure of class and world of the third. The authors counterpose the world of the third to the mainstream notion of the third world, seen as a lacking other in desperate need of aid and development. Thus, for them, the hegemonic form of global capital is engendered through the foregrounding of the poor, victim third world and the foreclosure of the non-capitalist world of the third. Building on what they characterize as an ab-original reading of Marxian historical materialism and the Lacanian real, the authors seek to conceptualize a counter-hegemonic revolutionary subject as a basis for postcapitalist alternatives to the hegemonic form of global capital.
Durchführung von Miranda-Evaluierungen: Anwendungen von psychologischem Fachwissen und Wissenschaft im forensischen Kontext
Par Richard Rogers, Eric Y. Drogin. 2023
This innovative book provides both the conceptual framework and clinical methods needed to appropriately handle problems that arise in the administration…
of Miranda warnings and waivers. Largely overlooked for decades, Miranda rights have been compromised in multiple ways, and in millions of cases. For example, each year, thousands of adult arrestees with intellectual disabilities or severe mental disorders waive their rights with markedly impaired Miranda understanding and reasoning. This also applies to thousands of developmentally immature juvenile detainees, who are often provided with complex warnings far beyond their comprehension levels. Addressing this continued crisis, Conducting Miranda Evaluations presents balanced and empirically based guidelines for conducting forensic assessments and communicating their empirical conclusions to the legal community. This book provides psychologists, and related professionals with the essential forensic and legal knowledge for carrying out evaluations of both Miranda comprehension and waiver-relevant reasoning.
The Effects of Bilingualism on Non-Linguistic Cognition: A Historic Perspective
Par Jennifer Mattschey. 2023
This book examines a century of research on the relationship between bilingualism and intelligence and relates it to more recent…
research on bilingualism and executive functioning. In doing so, it highlights how bilingualism research has been understood and used by wider society and its impact on current debates in cognitive science as well as language policy and education. The book probes the correlation between the fact that while early intelligence research suggested a negative effect of bilingualism on intelligence, the so-called “Bilingual Problem”, later research implied a positive effect, “the Bilingual Advantage.” It questions whether the negative consequences that arose from the Bilingual Problem are influencing researchers’ reluctance to let go of the Bilingual Advantage. Findings on both the bilingual ‘advantage’ and ‘disadvantage’ are shown to have suffered from similar methodological problems, with research into the former finding itself at the centre of the ongoing replication crisis in psychology. This book provides fresh insights that will be of particular interest to students and scholars of cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, bilingualism, applied linguistics, education and the history of science.

Implementing Trauma- and Violence-Informed Care: A Handbook
Par C. Nadine Wathen, Colleen Varcoe. 2023
The need for health and social services to be trauma- and violence-informed has never been so pressing. In the wake…
of COVID-19, racial violence intensified and violence against women spiked globally. Mental health for many is worsening, while the ongoing toxic drug overdose crisis provides horrendous evidence of the impact of trauma, violence, stigma, and social inequities. Service providers across sectors are increasingly impacted by these dynamics and, without supportive environments, are burning out. Implementing Trauma- and Violence-Informed Care aims to support health and social service organizations and providers to create environments, policies, and practices to mitigate the harms of structural and interpersonal violence and the trauma that ensues. The book is organized around case examples of trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) implementation and impact in diverse settings, providing how-to guidance for getting started, sustaining momentum, and assessing outcomes. The book describes the importance of TVIC at multiple levels, from individual practices to organizational protocols and system-level policies, emphasizing TVIC’s alignment with system transformation goals. In doing so, the book presents TVIC as a call to action to improve service user experiences and outcomes, efficient and effective use of resources, and the health and well-being of staff, while addressing and reducing health and social inequities.
