Par Hayden Smith. 2016
The criminal justice system now serves as the chief provider of health care services to a significant portion of society.…
This includes the provision of physical and mental health care for offender populations who require substantial health care resources. To date, little is known or understood with regard to how these services and programs are being delivered. This book addresses the gaps in our knowledge by presenting a range of studies detailing the daily practices that occur in places where criminal justice and public health systems intersect. This includes an assessment of sheriff agency emergency communication systems, a study of problem behaviours and health using a juvenile sample, the challenge of treating mentally ill prison inmates with note of important gender differences, the impact of case management on justice systems, and a review of substance abuse cessation programs among pregnant women currently serving probation and parole sentences. Also included is a policy piece in which the authors call for an integrated model that is neither criminological nor public health specific. These readings provide a range of empirical examples that highlight important successes and challenges facing the criminal justice and public health systems. They suggest that integration and partnerships represent the most efficacious means to reduce critical social problems such as violence, poor health, and criminality. This book was originally published as a special issue of Criminal Justice Studies.Immaculate Conception: Sophia Light Codes for Modern Sacredness

or maladjusted to cry and feel utterly lost when a pet dies. Often that pet has been a close friend, uncritical, loyal, and devoted—bringing us countless hours of peaceful companionship and joyful play. There is no need to keep grief hidden or wonder why we can’t immediately “replace” our dead pet. Feelings deserve understanding and respect—not dismissive comments like “it’s just a cat” or “why don’t you get another dog?” that, even if well-meaning, can cause enormous distress to those who are mourning a genuine loss.Goodbye, Dear Friend acknowledges both the extent and depth of grief of a pet. Based on an avalanche of letters about pet loss the author has received at her advice column, as well as the experiences of historical figures like Sigmund Freud and Sir Walter Scott, the book takes us through the process of grieving, delving into such topics as putting a pet to sleep; taking comfort in memorials; and whether there is a pet heaven. With a list of further resources included, Goodbye, Dear Friend is essential for every pet owner, young or old, and will bring great solace at a time when one can feel most alone.Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths in Barnet, Fincley & Hendon (Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths)

under a bridge holding the dismembered remains of a young woman. Finding that the dead woman had just undergone an abortion, prosecutors raced to establish her identity and fix blame for her death. Suspicion fell on Nancy Guilford, half of a married pair of "doctors" well known to police throughout New England. A fascinated public followed the suspect's flight from justice, as many rooted for the fugitive. The Disquieting Death of Emma Gill takes a close look not only at the Guilfords, but also at the cultural shifts and societal compacts that allowed their practice to flourish while abortion was both illegal and unregulated.Focusing on the women at the heart of the story—both victim and perpetrator—Biederman reexamines this slice of history through a feminist lens and reminds us of the very real lives at stake when a woman's body and choices are controlled by others.Blood Money: The Story of Life, Death, and Profit Inside America's Blood Industry
Par Kathleen McLaughlin. 2023
A &“haunting&” (Anne Helen Petersen, author of Can&’t Even) and deeply personal investigation of an underground for-profit medical industry and…
the American underclass it drains for blood and profit.Journalist Kathleen McLaughlin knew she&’d found a treatment that worked on her rare autoimmune disorder. She had no idea it had been drawn from the veins of America&’s most vulnerable. So begins McLaughlin&’s ten-year investigation researching and reporting on the $20-billion-a year business she found at the other end of her medication, revealing a &“vampiric real-life story of modern-day greed&” (Leah Sottile, host of Bundyville). Assigned to work in China, where the plasma supply had been rocked by numerous scandals, McLaughlin hid American plasma in her luggage during trips between the two countries. And when she was warned by a Chinese researcher of troubling echoes between America&’s domestic plasma supply chain and the one she&’d seen spin out into chaos in China, she knew she had to dig deeper. Blood Money shares McLaughlin&’s decade-long mission to learn the full story of where her medicine comes from. She travels the United States in search of the truth about human blood plasma and learns that twenty million Americans each year sell their plasma for profit—a human-derived commodity extracted inside our borders to be processed and packaged for retail across the globe. She investigates the thin evidence pharmaceutical companies have used to push plasma as a wonder drug for everything from COVID-19 to wrinkled skin. And she unearths an American economic crisis hidden in plain sight: single mothers, college students, laid-off Rust Belt auto workers, and a booming blood market at America&’s southern border, where collection agencies target Mexican citizens willing to cross over and sell their plasma for substandard pay. This &“captivating and anguished exposé&” (Publishers Weekly) weaves together McLaughlin&’s personal battle to overcome illness while also facing her own complicity in this wheel of exploitation with an electrifying portrait of big business run amok.Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders

The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women. During their final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn&’t return home as planned, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite, their tent slashed open, their beloved dog missing, and both women dead in their sleeping bags. The unsolved murders of Winans and Williams continue to haunt all who had encountered them or knew their story. When award-winning journalist and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles begins looking into the case, she discovers conflicting evidence, mismatched timelines, and details that just don&’t add up. With unprecedented access to crucial crime-scene forensics and key witnesses—and with a growing sense of both mission and obsession—she begins to uncover the truth. connections of each of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark as well as correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, and crystals • Provide examples and tips on how runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more • Explains how runes and plants can be worked with for the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature Runes and plants both contain the dynamic and raw energies of Mother Earth and can be used to heal, manifest, protect, and elevate magick. Both support and deepen the nature-human connection that is vital to mind, body, and spirit. And while both can provide us with many benefits on their own, when merged in magickal union, their combined powers are multiplied exponentially. In this magickal grimoire, herbalist witch Nicolette Miele immerses readers in the wisdom and folklore of the 24 Elder Futhark runes as well as their correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, crystals, and plants. Each chapter begins by discussing the etymology, meanings, mythology, divination, correspondences, and magick of a particular rune and culminates with profiles of several herbs and plants that possess similar magickal energies. Each plant profile delves into the magickal, metaphysical, traditional, and medicinal applications as well as how to work with these incredible plant allies. These profiles also provide examples and tips on how the runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more. For example, the author connects Fehu, the rune of wealth and value, with the practice of altar-building, making offerings, and with alfalfa, cedar, dandelion, and other plants traditionally used in abundance and prosperity magick. In the chapter on Kenaz, the rune of heat and illumination, the nature connection is nurtured through the element of fire and a step-by-step bindrune candle ritual. The plants connected with Kenaz are those that embody the characteristics of fire—such as passion, ferocity, and sexuality—and include clove, damiana, and kava kava. Guiding the green witch through the benefits and strengths of synergistic magick, this book helps eclectic magickal practitioners advance their craft through folk magick and medicine, rituals, meditations, spells, and the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature.Dead by Sunset: Perfect Husband, Perfect Killer?
