The Deepest Map: The High-Stakes Race to Chart the World's Oceans
Par Laura Trethewey. 2023
A Globe and Mail Top 100 SelectionFive oceans cover approximately seventy per cent of the earth, yet we know little…
of what lies beneath them. Now, the race is on to completely map the oceans’ floor. Scientists, investors, militaries, and private explorers are competing in this epic venture to obtain an accurate reading of this vast terrain and understand its contours and environment. In The Deepest Map, Laura Trethewey chronicles this race to the bottom. Following global efforts around the world, she documents Inuit-led crowdsourced mapping in the Arctic as climate change alters the landscape, a Texas millionaire’s efforts to become the first man to dive to the deepest point in each ocean, and the increasingly fraught question of whether and how to mine the deep sea. A true tale of science, nature, technology, and extreme outdoor adventure, The Deepest Map both illuminates why we love — and fear — the earth’s final frontier and contributes to increasingly urgent conversations about climate change. The Probability of Everything
Par Sarah Everett. 2023
“One of the best books I have read this year (maybe ever).” —Colby Sharp, Nerdy Book ClubNPR Books We Love…
2023 | Publishers Weekly Best of 2023 | Winner of the Governor General's Literary Awards for Young People's LiteratureA heart-wrenching middle grade debut about Kemi, an aspiring scientist who loves statistics and facts, as she navigates grief and loss at a moment when life as she knows it changes forever.Eleven-year-old Kemi Carter loves scientific facts, specifically probability. It's how she understands the world and her place in it. Kemi knows her odds of being born were 1 in 5.5 trillion and that the odds of her having the best family ever were even lower. Yet somehow, Kemi lucked out.But everything Kemi thought she knew changes when she sees an asteroid hover in the sky, casting a purple haze over her world. Amplus-68 has an 84.7% chance of colliding with earth in four days, and with that collision, Kemi’s life as she knows it will end.But over the course of the four days, even facts don’t feel true to Kemi anymore. The new town she moved to that was supposed to be “better for her family” isn’t very welcoming. And Amplus-68 is taking over her life, but others are still going to school and eating at their favorite diner like nothing has changed. Is Kemi the only one who feels like the world is ending? With the days numbered, Kemi decides to put together a time capsule that will capture her family’s truth: how creative her mother is, how inquisitive her little sister can be, and how much Kemi's whole world revolves around her father. But no time capsule can change the truth behind all of it, that Kemi must face the most inevitable and hardest part of life: saying goodbye."My heart hurt as I raced through the last chapters of this unique book that shines a light on family, friends, grief, and love." —Lisa Yee, author of Maizy Chen's Last ChanceEcotourism in Sub-Saharan Africa: Thirty Years of Practice
Par Kenneth F. Backman, Ian E. Munanura. 2017
Since its first mention in the academic literature, ecotourism has been endorsed by NGOs and governments as the most environmentally…
sound and locally beneficial method of tourist development. Over the last thirty years sub-Saharan Africa has adopted ecotourism as the primary focus for tourism development; research into this has demonstrated mixed results. In this publication, we seek to explore the actual outcomes for African countries that have developed their tourism policy around the principals and values of ecotourism. The sheer scope and magnitude of the task means that a complete evaluation of ecotourism in Africa is impossible. Instead, included here are spot assessments of various aspects of ecotourism related to conservation, policy development, environment, governance, community and indigenous peoples in southern Africa. The studies cover a wide array of countries, including Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Though this is only the beginning of a needed long term evaluation of the positives and negatives of ecotourism, it provides a starting point from which to move forward. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ecotourism.Event Impact
Par John Armbrecht, Tommy D. Andersson. 2017
Events are increasingly used instrumentally to achieve goals of society such as cultural development, destination branding or economic development. Event…
impacts are, however, routinely measured from a purely economic perspective. Event Impact fills an important niche and a void in the literature on events by taking a holistic approach, incorporating issues like value creation, experiential value, value measurement, sustainability and impact assessment. It is one of the first books devoted to comprehensively dealing with the subject of event impacts, combining the ideas of an international group of academics to tackle an expanding area of research that cannot be met by the work of a single researcher. Methodological concepts such as triple impact assessment, cost–benefit analysis, travel cost method and Q-sort are combined, applied and tested in an event context, creating a unique book that broadens and deepens our knowledge about event impacts theoretically, methodologically as well as empirically. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. The Physiology of Taste: Or, Transcendental Gastronomy (American Antiquarian Cookbook Collection)
Par Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin. 2012
Perhaps the most influential food writer of his day, Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin&’s gastronomic essays are founding documents in the food-writing…
genre. This great classic of gastronomy is a witty and authoritative compendium on the art of dining, and it has never been out of print since first publication in 1825. The philosophy of Epicurus stands behind every page, and the simplest meal satisfied Brillat-Savarin, as long as it was executed with artistry. The sometimes wordy text is filled with aphorisms and axioms, and it has been endlessly analyzed and quoted. In a series of meditations that have the rhythm of an age of leisured reading and the confident pursuit of educated pleasures. Brillant-Savarin expounds on the delights of eating, which he considers a science, with witty anecdotes and observations such as:&“Those persons who suffer from indigestion, or who become drunk, are utterly ignorant of the true principles of eating and drinking.&”&“A dessert without cheese is like a beautiful woman with only one eye.&”&“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.&”&“The pleasure of the table belongs to all ages, to all conditions, to all countries, and to all eras; it mingles with all other pleasures, and remains at last to console us for their departure.&” This edition of The Physiology of Taste was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You

Par Lidia Matticchio Bastianich, Tanya Bastianich Manuali. 2011
From one of America's most beloved chefs and authors, a road trip into the heart of Italian American cooking today—from…
Chicago deep-dish pizza to the Bronx's eggplant parm—celebrating the communities that redefined what we know as Italian food. As she explores this utterly delectable and distinctive cuisine, Lidia shows us that every kitchen is different, every Italian community distinct, and little clues are buried in each dish: the Sicilian-style semolina bread and briny olives in New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwiches, the Neapolitan crust of New York pizza, and mushrooms (abundant in the United States, but scarce in Italy) stuffed with breadcrumbs, just as peppers or tomatoes are. Lidia shows us how this cuisine is an original American creation and gives recognition where it is long overdue to the many industrious Italians across the country who have honored the traditions of their homeland in a delicious new style. And of course, there are Lidia&’s irresistible recipes, including · Baltimore Crab Cakes · Pittsburgh&’s Primanti&’s Sandwiches · Chicago Deep-Dish Pizza · Eggplant Parmigiana from the Bronx · Gloucester Baked Halibut · Chicken Trombino from Philadelphia · authentic Italian American Meatloaf, and Spaghetti and Meatballs · Prickly Pear Granita from California · and, of course, a handful of cheesecakes and cookies that you&’d recognize in any classic Italian bakery This is a loving exploration of a fascinating cuisine—as only Lidia could give us.A comprehensive cookbook and guide to the flavors and health benefits of the Mediterranean diet—with one hundred recipes plus regional…

Par Tabitha Brown. 2024
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Feeding the Soul (Because It’s My Business) presents an inspirational guide for…
encouraging positive changes in your life—one day and one challenge at a time.I did a new thing today!Years ago, Tabitha Brown started a 30-day personal challenge that she called “I Did a New Thing!” The challenge was simple. Every day she would do something she’d never done before. Sometimes it was something small like trying a new food. Other times, she’d step it up a bit and speak to someone she’d never spoken to before. Still other times, she’d do the hard thing—facing a fear that she had, like having that tough conversation with a friend. No matter what it was, the point was that she was going to take a leap of faith and watch God open up a new lane for her.One of the “new things” she tried was a vegan challenge. She’d been struggling with illness for nearly a year and was desperately searching for healing. She challenged herself to eat vegan every day for thirty days, and six years later, her life has never been the same—all because she decided to do a new thing. In I Did a New Thing, Tab shares her own stories and those of others, alongside gentle guidance and encouragement to create these incredible changes for yourself and see what good can come from them. Whether that means having the hard conversation or trying for a promotion or simply wearing something different or doing something kind for someone else, Tab has a plan for you: Try one new thing, every single day, for thirty days. You don’t have to wait until Monday or the beginning of a new month or year to get started. There’s no set time and place or any extra preparation required. All you have to do is show up for yourself. And that can start right now.Slaughter and butcher your own animals safely and humanely with this award-winning guide.
