Par Heather Montgomery. 2024
Child abuse casts a long shadow over the history of childhood. Across the centuries there are numerous accounts of children…
being beaten, neglected, sexually assaulted, or even killed by those closest to them. This book explores this darker side of childhood history, looking at what constituted cruelty towards children in the past and at the social responses towards it. Focusing primarily on England, it is a history of violence against children in their own homes, covering a large timeframe which extends from medieval times to the present. Undeniably, the experience of children in the past was often brutal, and children were treated with, what seems to contemporary mores, callousness, and cruelty. However, historians have paid far less attention to how the mistreatment of children was understood within its contemporary context. Most parents, both now and in the past, loved their children and there have always been widely shared understandings of the boundaries that separate the acceptable treatment of children from the intolerable and morally wrong. This book will examine how these boundaries have changed and been contested over time and, in doing so, provides a context to the many forms of violence experienced by children in the past.Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings

The little fried somethings—like an arancine or panelle—are easy, welcome, and nourishing. The Fresh Cavatelli, Pasta with Eggplant and Tomatoes, Bucatini with Sardines and Wild Fennel, and the eye-opening Anelletti Timballo explain why Sicilians are the biggest pasta eaters in the world. Festive meat dishes—such as Lamb-Stuffed Pastry, an Easter staple, or Grilled Sausage with Bay Leaves and Onions—are festive because the moment it&’s holiday time, Sicilians everywhere head outside and fire up their grills. And for a people known for their passion for sweets, some famous Sicilian treats—Watermelon Pudding, Lemon Granita, Rolled Fig Cookies, and the pinnacle of desserts, the elaborate Sicilian Cake with Ricotta Cream and Marzipan. Along the way, the author delves into everything from cheese, couscous, and olives to Amaro and the importance of bitterness. Visitors to Sicily often sense it to be a place unlike anywhere else—lost in time and a little bit secretive. The Food of Sicily opens a bright window on it, celebrating this wonderful food culture while honoring everything that makes it special.Raising a Kid Who Can: Simple Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Adaptability and Emotional Strength

Par Courtney B. Vance, Dr Robin L. Smith. 2023
"A thoughtful, wise, empathetic book that has the capacity to save lives. " (Kirkus) "...an inspiring story of what [Black men]…
can achieve personally and professionally when they have the tools and support necessary to examine their pain and find their joy." (New York Journal of Books) A moving combination of memoir, psychology, and practical tools, this book offers Black men guidance and support for reclaiming mental well-being and finding whole, full-hearted living. Early in his career, actor Courtney B. Vance lost his father to suicide. Recently, he lost his godson to the same fate. Still, as mental health discourse hits the mainstream, it leaves the most vulnerable out of the conversation: Black men. In America, we teach that strength means holding back tears and shaming your own feelings. In the Black community, these pressures are especially poignant. Poor mental health outcomes-- including diagnoses of depression and anxiety, reliance on prescription drugs, and suicide-- have skyrocketed in the past decade. Institutionalized racism, microagressions, and stress caused by socioeconomic factors have led Black individuals to face worse mental health outcomes than any other demographic. In this book, Courtney B. Vance seeks to change this trajectory. Along with professional expertise from famed psychologist Dr. Robin L. Smith (popularly known as &“Dr. Robin&”), Courtney B. Vance explores issues of grief, relationships, identity, and race through the telling of his own most formative experiences. Together, Courtney and Dr. Robin provide a guide for Black men navigating life&’s ups and downs, reclaiming mental well-being, and examining broken pieces to find whole, full-hearted living. Self-care is an act of revolution. It&’s time to revolutionize mental health in the Black community.A cookbook of simple, delicious, empowering recipes from the man who really knows what men like Matt Hranek, the…

catch-all for various conditions, abounding with negative stereotypes and incorrect information. Now, revised and simpler classifications devised for the World Health Organization (WHO) should make diagnosis and treatment more straightforward. This book, by Professor Peter Tyrer, chair of the advisory body for the WHO, presents new ways of looking at personality. Taming the Beast Within explores the strengths as well as the difficulties of personality, so that all can come to an informed and tolerant understanding of PD. Topics include:what personality is‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ personalitieshow mental illness differs from personality disorderpolitics and personalitythe roots of disturbancetypes of disorder, including borderline personality disorderhelping yourself and othersnidotherapy and other approaches drug treatmentsProfessor Peter Tyrer says, ‘I hope this book will help people with PD, their families and friends, and everyone involved in managing this very common condition. Using our personality strengths, and accepting that some difficulties with others may be self-generated, are the key to understanding. The title of this book can then be changed – no longer a beast within, just a pussy cat!’Competent Reader, Disabled Reader: Research and Application (Psychology Revivals)
Par Martin H. Singer. 1982
In the past frustration with experimental reports had caused educators to dismiss the entire reading research enterprise. Originally published in…
1982, this book attempts to abstract those experimental results relevant to developing effective reading programs. The book concentrates on the more mechanical aspects of reading skill such as visual discrimination ability, visual and auditory memory, visual-to-phonetic translation skills, and attentional strategies. These skills it is argued, account for the major proportion of variance in reading ability. The research on both competent and incompetent reading indicates the special importance of such skills to reading. The book contains three sections. Section I reviews the experimental evidence on competent reading. The review highlights consistent threads of evidence and provides a description of the competent reader’s strategies for analyzing text. Section II reviews research on poor reading. This section evaluates the concept of dyslexia and stresses that reading problems are not uniform. Section III maintains that the information about competent reading strategies and the impediments to acquiring those strategies should guide educators in evaluating instructional materials and facilitate the diagnosis of reading failure. Today it can be read in its historical context. The Misfortunes of Arthur: A Critical, Old-Spelling Edition (Routledge Revivals)
Par Thomas Hughes. 1992
The Misfortunes of Arthur, written by Thomas Hughes is one of the earliest printed plays from the English Renaissance and,…
as such, deserves its place of interest in dramaturgical studies for its historical significance. It offers a detailed literary evocation of Elizabethan anti-imperial thinking and a genuine desire to debate controversial questions. The play takes a sceptical view of Arthur and provides evidence of a political point of view that must have had a significant number of supporters in 1588 when it was performed for Elizabeth I on the eve of the Spanish Armada. It is also not difficult to find themes in The Misfortunes of Arthur which would find expression again in the later Renaissance drama. The fact that the play shares affinities with such diverse plays as Gorboduc and The Spanish Tragedy indicates that it holds a pivotal position in a time of theatrical flux. It provides a single, concise encapsulation of the Arthurian chronicle in a literary form, a drama, that students will find more engaging than chronicles or lengthy romances. This reissue of the 1992 Garland edition is of value to scholars because of the original spelling and source study contained within the work. It also contains helpful historical context in the introduction and a useful diagram of the Elizabethan stage which both students and scholars will find useful. This book analyses discourses of the use of motivation theories in schools globally. It focuses on the overall impact of…
motivation theories on teachers, students’ engagement, well-being, academic excellence, standards, equity and global competitiveness. It examines the role of motivation theories impacting on teachers and students in the classroom, and the overall impact of cognitive, social cognitive, affective and psycho-motor domains, used to motivate students to improve their performance in the classroom. The book analyses such topics as Behaviourism, a major motivation model to improve performance in schools, cognitive theories for creating engaging learning environments, including achievement motivation, Social cognitive theories for improving engagement and motivation, social constructivism to improve students’ motivation and academic achievement, humanistic approaches for creating effective motivational environments, the use of discourse analysis in understanding motivation, and dominant values used in motivation in inclusive schools. This book contributes in a very scholarly way, to a more holistic understanding of the nexus between globalisation, dominant models of motivation, and students’ engaging learning environments, and their academic achievement.Eat Your Words: The Definitive Dictionary for the Discerning Diner
