Par Robert E. Brooks, Don M. Chance. 2024
An accessible and mathematically rigorous resource for masters and PhD students In Foundations of the Pricing of Financial Derivatives: Theory…
and Analysis two expert finance academics with professional experience deliver a practical new text for doctoral and masters’ students and also new practitioners. The book draws on the authors extensive combined experience teaching, researching, and consulting on this topic and strikes an effective balance between fine-grained quantitative detail and high-level theoretical explanations. The authors fill the gap left by books directed at masters’-level students that often lack mathematical rigor. Further, books aimed at mathematically trained graduate students often lack quantitative explanations and critical foundational materials. Thus, this book provides the technical background required to understand the more advanced mathematics used in this discipline, in class, in research, and in practice. Readers will also find: Tables, figures, line drawings, practice problems (with a solutions manual), references, and a glossary of commonly used specialist terms Review of material in calculus, probability theory, and asset pricing Coverage of both arithmetic and geometric Brownian motion Extensive treatment of the mathematical and economic foundations of the binomial and Black-Scholes-Merton models that explains their use and derivation, deepening readers’ understanding of these essential models Deep discussion of essential concepts, like arbitrage, that broaden students’ understanding of the basis for derivative pricing Coverage of pricing of forwards, futures, and swaps, including arbitrage-free term structures and interest rate derivativesAn effective and hands-on text for masters’-level and PhD students and beginning practitioners with an interest in financial derivatives pricing, Foundations of the Pricing of Financial Derivatives is an intuitive and accessible resource that properly balances math, theory, and practical applications to help students develop a healthy command of a difficult subject. This book places administrative reform in post-socialist countries in a broad context of power and domination. This new perspective clarifies…
the reasons why reforms went awry in Russia and some other post-Soviet countries, whereas they produced positive outcomes in the Baltic States and most East European countries. The contributors analyse the idea that administrative reform cannot produce sustainable changes in the organization of the state apparatus as long as it does not touch the underpinning model of power and domination. Using an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, the essays combine elements of philosophy, sociology, political science and economics, including a wealth of primary and secondary data: surveys, in-depth interviews with state representatives and participant observation. The book focuses on Russia and analyses recent developments in this country by the way of comparison with the experience of carrying out administrative reform in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany and North America. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics.Celebrity, Convergence and Transformation (ISSN)
Par Douglas Brownlied, Paul Hewer, Finola Kerrigan. 2018
Bringing together the latest thinking on both celebrity brands and celebrity culture from academics specialising in the field of marketing,…
this book explores a range of insightful contexts in order to add vigour and vitality to our understanding of the connections between celebrities, markets and culture. It unpacks the identity theoretics which have their origins in the turn to celebrity culture and the spectacle and glamour of mass-media practices. In doing so, the contributors hint at new forms of individuation where the line between the virtual and the actual is blurred, and where images of celebrities construct and deconstruct themselves. Par Sven Modell. 2016
This book explores the relevance of management accounting research and practice for a range of broader, societal phenomena related to…
corporate governance and regulation, the creation and maintenance of markets and their concomitant social and political implications. It also explores the theoretical and methodological implications of pursuing a research agenda exploring such phenomena in greater detail. Containing a number of theoretical, methodological and empirical contributions by leading management accounting scholars, The Societal Relevance of Management Accounting seeks to advance novel research approaches that go beyond the traditional intra-organisational focus that has long dominated management accounting research. As such, it seeks to enhance the relevance of management accounting research for a broader range of stakeholders and interest groups in and around individual organisations. This book was originally published as a special issue of Accounting and Business Research.Tourism and Poverty Reduction: Principles and impacts in developing countries
Par Anna Spenceley and Dorothea Meyer. 2016
Over the past decade, there have been an increasing number of publications that have analysed and critiqued the potential of…
tourism to be a mechanism for poverty reduction in less economically developed countries (LEDCs). This book showcases work by established and emerging researchers that provides new thinking and tests previously made assumptions, providing an essential guide for students, practitioners and academics. This book advances our understanding of the changes and ways forward in the field of sustainable tourism development. Five main themes are illustrated throughout the book: (1) measuring impacts of tourism on poverty; (2) the need to evaluate whether interventions that aim to reduce poverty are effective; (3) how unbalanced power relations and weak governance can undermine efforts; (4) the importance of the private sector’s use of pro-poor business practices; and (5) the value of using multidisciplinary and multi-method research approaches. Furthermore, the book shows that academic research findings can be used practically in destinations, and how practitioners can benefit from sharing their experiences with academic scholars. This book was based on a special issue and various articles from the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.Emerging Powers and the UN: What Kind of Development Partnership? (ISSN)
Par Thomas G. Weiss and Adriana Erthal Abdenur. 2016
The post-2015 goals and the changing environment of development cooperation will demand a renewed and strengthened UN development system. In…
line with their increasing significance as economic powers, a growing number of emerging nations will play an expanded role in the UN development system. These roles will take the form of growing financial contributions to individual organizations, greater weight in governance structures, higher staff representation, a stronger voice in development deliberations, and a greater overall influence on the UN development agenda. Emerging Powers and the UN explores in depth the relationship of these countries with, and their role in, the future UN development system. Formally, the relationship is through representation as member states (first UN) and UN staff (second UN). However, the importance of the non-public sector interests (third UN) of emerging economies is also growing, through private sponsorship and NGO activities in development. Par Chennat Gopalakrishnan. 2016
This book represents a landmark effort to probe and analyze the theory and empirics of designing water disaster management policies.…
It consists of seven chapters that examine, in-depth and comprehensively, issues that are central to crafting effective policies for water disaster management. The author uses historical surveys, institutional analysis, econometric investigations, empirical case studies, and conceptual-theoretical discussions to clarify and illuminate the complex policy process. The specific topics studied in this book include a review and analysis of key policy areas and research priority areas associated with water disaster management, community participation in disaster risk reduction, the economics and politics of ‘Green’ flood control, probabilistic flood forecasting for flood risk management, polycentric governance and flood risk management, drought management with the aid of dynamic inter-generational preferences, and how social resilience can inform SA/SIA for adaptive planning for climate change in vulnerable areas.A unique feature of this book is its analysis of the causes and consequences of water disasters and efforts to address them successfully through policy-rich, cross-disciplinary and transnational papers. This book is designed to help enrich the sparse discourse on water disaster management policies and galvanize water professionals to craft creative solutions to tackle water disasters efficiently, equitably, and sustainably. This book should also be of considerable use to disaster management professionals, in general, and natural resource policy analysts. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Natural Resource Policy Research.Second Homes and Leisure: New perspectives on a forgotten relationship
Par Trudie Walters and Tara Duncan. 2016
Second homes (variously summer houses, shacks, baches, cottages, dacha) are a popular cultural phenomenon in many countries and an emerging…
trend in others. They are inextricably linked to tourism, recreation and leisure, and yet the fundamental relationship between second homes and leisure often appears to have been overlooked by researchers in the area. This book seeks to address this absence, bringing together an exciting collection of research from around the world. Drawing on examples from Canada, Japan, Morocco, Costa Rica, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, this book highlights the interdisciplinary nature of second home research in the leisure field. The book describes the nexus of second homes and leisure from a variety of perspectives: planning and policy, historical, social and cultural. It is an essential work for those interested in new cultural viewpoints on second homes and leisure practices. This book was originally published as a special issue of Annals of Leisure Research.Greek and Roman Networks in the Mediterranean
Par Irad Malkin, Christy Constantakopoulou and Katerina Panagopoulou. 2009
How useful is the concept of "network" for historical studies and the ancient world in particular? Using theoretical models of…
social network analysis, this book illuminates aspects of the economic, social, religious, and political history of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds. Bringing together some of the most active and prominent researchers in ancient history, this book moves beyond political institutions, ethnic, and geographical boundaries in order to observe the ancient Mediterranean through a perspective of network interaction. It employs a wide range of approaches, and to examine relationships and interactions among various social entities in the Mediterranean. Chronologically, the book extends from the early Iron Age to the late Antique world, covering the Mediterranean between Antioch in the east to Massalia (Marseilles) in the west. This book was published as two special issues in Mediterranean Historical Review.China and East Asian Regionalism: Economic and Security Cooperation and Institution-Building
Par Suisheng Zhao. 2012
To convey the image of a responsible power willing to contribute to regional stability and cooperation, China has shifted from…
a single-minded preference for bilateralism to an active participation in East Asian regionalism in the recent decades. This development has inspired discussions over whether a rising China could play a leadership role in building an institutionalized architecture for regional cooperation in East Asia. Nevertheless, this has not happened as East Asian regional cooperation and relevant activities remain mostly ad hoc and informal, especially when compared to regions such as Europe. To what extent has China contributed or constrained the development of regionalism in East Asia? What are China’s desired roles and objectives in East Asian regional cooperation? What is the level of trust that other regional players have for China in regional cooperation? This book seeks answers to these questions by exploring China’s motivations and strategic calculations as well as its policy practices in East Asian economic and security cooperation. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary China.Innovation in Public Services: Theoretical, managerial, and international perspectives (Elgar Original Reference Ser.)
Par Stephen P. Osborne, Louise Brown, Richard M. Walker. 2016
In response to changes in internal needs, external organizational environments, and the expectations of shareholders – most notably, citizens and…
politicians – innovation is now an important common-place aspect of governance and the running of public service organizations. Given the ongoing financial and economic crisis, which presents a significant challenge to public service organizations (PSOs), there is a growing need to establish innovative strategies in order to survive the crisis, and provide the basis for future sustainable growth. This book contributes towards the discussion of PSO innovation through theoretically informed empirical studies of innovation across a range of theories, topics and fields. Studies examine the role of citizens, managers, and public service organizations; the adoption, diffusion, implementation, and management of innovations; collaboration, communication, and information technologies; and decision-making, ethical principles, HR management, leadership, and procurement. The studies – which examine the situation in a range of countries in Europe and Asia – cover a range of different organizations such as non-profits, health service organizations, and local governments. Par N. S. Siddharthan and K. Narayanan. 2016
In the post-liberalization period, India has slowly but steadily tried to foster innovation to improve competitive efficiency of Indian manufacturing…
and thus boost global competitiveness of the industrial sector. Foreign direct investment was looked upon as a major source of technology paradigm shift; in recent times, industrial firms have been investing overseas, even in countries to which they used to export, based on their technological capabilities. Firms in Indian manufacturing industries have also attempted to bring about technological upgrades through imports of design and drawings (disembodied technology) against lump sum, royalty and technical knowhow fees, and imports of capital machinery (embodied technology) where the technology is embodied in the capital good itself. This volume comprises empirical contributions on this emerging phenomenon, on a range of issues including the role of R&D; mergers, acquisitions and technological efforts; technological determinants of competitive advantages; the role of small and medium enterprises and regional patterns; technological efforts and global operations; and the role of industrial clusters in promoting innovation and competitiveness. This book was originally published as a special issue of Innovation and Development.Restoring Communities Resettled After Dam Construction in Asia (Routledge Special Issues on Water Policy and Governance)
Par Mikiyasu Nakayama and Ryo Fujikura. 2014
The rapid economic expansion and population growth of developing countries in Asia has led to increasing demands for water and…
energy. To meet these demands, large dam development projects have been completed, which has inevitably caused involuntary resettlement. In order to support these projects, dam developers must find appropriate ways to ensure adequate livelihood reconstruction for resettled individuals. Resettlement causes both short-term and long-term effects (both positive and negative) for the relocated populations, meaning that in order to evaluate the larger impact of such projects long-term post-project evaluations must be carried out. However, post-project evaluations by international donors have typically been conducted within a few years after completion; the long-term impact of such projects is seldom evaluated. This book aims to fill this gap. A study team composed of researchers from Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Sri Lanka, and Turkey has conducted ten case studies focusing on resettled individuals satisfaction, opportunities offered, and income generation. The volume provides an overview of the ten case studies, which were carried out across five countries. It also discusses how a compensation programme should be designed and what sort of options should be presented to resettled individuals for their maximum benefit. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.New Models of Inclusive Innovation for Development
Par Richard Heeks, Christopher Foster and Yanuar Nugroho. 2016
Inequality and innovation are both rising issues on the international development agenda. Their intersection is inclusive innovation; defined as the…
inclusion within some aspect of innovation of groups who are currently marginalised. This is a topic of increasing interest and activity. Large firms have been working to deliver innovative goods and services for base-of-the-pyramid consumers: the c.3 billion who live on less than US$2 per day. Within poor communities, an influx of new technology, finance and capabilities has spurred more localised innovation.A variety of different models have been identified by which this activity is organised and implemented, such as inclusive innovation clusters, grassroots innovation, frugal innovation, innovation platforms, and inclusive user-producer interactions. This book explores the operation, conceptualisation and impact of these models, and analyses the nature of inclusive innovation practice and research. It will be of interest to researchers, policy-makers, strategists and other practitioners associated with these new forms of innovation. This book was originally published as a special issue of Innovation and Development.Ecotourism in Sub-Saharan Africa: Thirty Years of Practice
Par Kenneth F. Backman, Ian E. Munanura. 2017
Since its first mention in the academic literature, ecotourism has been endorsed by NGOs and governments as the most environmentally…
sound and locally beneficial method of tourist development. Over the last thirty years sub-Saharan Africa has adopted ecotourism as the primary focus for tourism development; research into this has demonstrated mixed results. In this publication, we seek to explore the actual outcomes for African countries that have developed their tourism policy around the principals and values of ecotourism. The sheer scope and magnitude of the task means that a complete evaluation of ecotourism in Africa is impossible. Instead, included here are spot assessments of various aspects of ecotourism related to conservation, policy development, environment, governance, community and indigenous peoples in southern Africa. The studies cover a wide array of countries, including Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Though this is only the beginning of a needed long term evaluation of the positives and negatives of ecotourism, it provides a starting point from which to move forward. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ecotourism.Cultural Values and Entrepreneurship
Par Francisco Liñán, Ghulam Nabi and Norris Krueger. 2016
Cultural Values and Entrepreneurship aims to broaden and deepen our understanding of which elements of ‘culture’ influence, or are influenced…
by, entrepreneurial activity. Differences in entrepreneurial activity among countries, and regions within those countries, are persistent and cannot be fully explained by institutional and economic variables. A substantial number of these differences have been attributed to culture, and it is clear that some socio-cultural practices, values and norms are more conducive to driving or inhibiting entrepreneurial intentions and activity. However, we need to dig deeper into ‘how’ and ‘why’ cultural practices, and underlying values and norms, matter in entrepreneurial action, in order to more fully understand the complexities of the processes, without making cross-cultural or cross-national generalisations. Unique cultural, national, and institutional contexts present different practices in terms of opportunities and challenges for driving entrepreneurial action. The contributions in this book consider some of the many different facets of the culture-entrepreneurship relationship, and offer valuable insights to our understanding of the field. Par John Armbrecht, Tommy D. Andersson. 2017
Events are increasingly used instrumentally to achieve goals of society such as cultural development, destination branding or economic development. Event…
impacts are, however, routinely measured from a purely economic perspective. Event Impact fills an important niche and a void in the literature on events by taking a holistic approach, incorporating issues like value creation, experiential value, value measurement, sustainability and impact assessment. It is one of the first books devoted to comprehensively dealing with the subject of event impacts, combining the ideas of an international group of academics to tackle an expanding area of research that cannot be met by the work of a single researcher. Methodological concepts such as triple impact assessment, cost–benefit analysis, travel cost method and Q-sort are combined, applied and tested in an event context, creating a unique book that broadens and deepens our knowledge about event impacts theoretically, methodologically as well as empirically. Par Mike Robinson and Josef Ploner. 2016
Going far beyond being just a mega sport event, the Olympic Games are, and have been in the past, important…
settings for tourism and cultural change. Hosting the Olympic Games presents a unique opportunity for countries to promote, regenerate, and develop cities and regions, and to firmly locate them within an increasingly competitive global tourism marketplace. From Athens to Rio de Janeiro, Olympic landmark buildings, ‘districts’, and ‘parks’ have permanently transformed cities and regions, and gained tremendous material and symbolic value as tourist attractions. On another level, the Olympic Games produce a kaleidoscopic range of intangible and quasi-religious engagements with place and spectacle. They have a tremendous impact on the image of the host country, while invoking collective memories and touching on emotions such as suspense, compassion, togetherness, and pride. Tourism has also become a major watchword in ongoing debates on the ‘legacy’ of the Olympic Games, and it deeply penetrates discourses on social justice and cultural change on a local, national and global scale. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change.
