Par Sharon Fries-Britt, Bridget Turner Kelly. 2024
With the increasing focus on the critical importance of mentoring in advancing Black women students from graduation to careers in…
academia, this book identifies and considers the peer mentoring contexts and conditions that support Black women student success in higher education. This edited collection focuses on Black women students primarily at the doctoral level and how they have retained each other through their educational journey, emphasizing how they navigated this season of educational changes given COVID and racial unrest. Chapters illuminate what minoritized women students have done to mentor each other to navigate unwelcome campus environments laden with identity politics and other structural barriers. Shining a light on systemic structures in place that contribute to Black women’s alienation in the academy, this book unpacks implications for interactions and engagement with faculty as advisors and mentors. An important resource for faculty and graduate students at colleges and universities, ultimately this work is critical to helping the academy fortify Black women’s sense of belonging and connection early in their academic career and foster their success.Multilingual Digital Humanities (ISSN)
Par Lorella Viola, Paul Spence. 2024
Multilingual Digital Humanities explores the impact of monolingualism—especially Anglocentrism—on digital practices in the humanities and social sciences. The volume explores a…
wide range of applied contexts, such as digital linguistic injustice, critical digital literacy, digital learning, digital publishing, low-resourced, minoritised or endangered languages in a digital space, and multilingual historical intertextuality. These discussions are situated within wider work on language technologies, language documentation and international (in particular European) language-based infrastructure creation. Drawing on both primary and secondary research, this four-part book features 13 diverse case studies of infrastructural projects, pedagogical resources, computational models, interface building, and publishing initiatives in a range of languages, including Arabic, French, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, German, Spanish, Bengali, Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil. All the debates are contextualised within a wider cultural frame, thus bridging the gap between the linguistic focus of the multilingual initiatives and wider discussion of cultural criticism in DH. Multilingual Digital Humanities recognizes the digital as a culturally situated and organic multilingual entity embedding past, present, and future worlds, which reacts to and impacts on institutional and methodological frameworks for knowledge creation. It is essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners working in digital humanities and digital studies. This book focuses on the Union Army from April 14 - July 21, 1861. The book traces command and recruiting…
problems, carefully studies the first Bull Run, and then analyzes the battle and relates its results to the actions of Union leaders.“LACK OF PREPAREDNESS for war was a United States tradition in the nineteenth century. Without the military background of the formidable continental powers, this nation stubbornly refused to maintain a large, efficient armed force during peacetime. When conflict occurred, the government paid a stiff price for this attitude and was forced to create a military machine almost from the ground up.The author tells in detail of the period between the fall of Fort Sumter and the First Battle of Bull Run. The book falls into three divisions: the first, describing command and recruiting problems, along with personality sketches, at the war’s beginning; the second, setting down a careful study of the first Bull Run, seen through Northern eyes; the third, analyzing the battle and relating its result to the potentialities and actions of Union leaders.Strategy and tactics during these first, crucial days are carefully treated. Winfield Scott’s plans, Robert Patterson’s misadventure in the Shenandoah Valley, and the ultimate rout of Irvin McDowell’s forces make up the bulk of the book. Samuel Heintzelman, David Hunter, Daniel Tyler, Dixon Miles, Erasmus Keyes, Ambrose Burnside, Israel Richardson and other major leaders have their day in court.”-Introduction.Francisco López de Gómara's General History of the Indies
Par Angela Helmer, Clayton Miles Lehmann. 2023
This work is the first English translation of the entire text of part one of sixteenth-century Spanish historian Francisco López…
de Gómara’s General History of the Indies. Including substantial critical annotations and providing access to various readings and passages added to or removed from the successive editions of the 1550s, this translation expands the archive of texts available to English speakers reconsidering the various aspects of the European invasion of America. General History of the Indies was the first universal history of the recent discoveries and conquests of the New World made available to the Old World audience. At publication it consisted of two parts: the first a general history of the European discovery, conquest, and settlement of the Americas, and the second a detailed description of Cortés’s conquest of Mexico. Part one—in the multiple Spanish editions and translations into Italian and French published at the time—was the most comprehensive, popular, and accessible account of the natural history and geography of the Americas, the ethnology of the peoples of the New World, and the history of the Spanish conquest, including the most recent developments in Peru. Despite its original and continued importance, however, it had never been translated into English. Gómara’s history communicates Europeans’ general understanding of the New World throughout the middle and later sixteenth century. A lively, comparatively brief description of Europe’s expansion into the Americas with significant importance to today’s understanding of the early modern worldview, Francisco López de Gómara’s General History of the Indies will be of great interest to students of and specialists in Latin American history, Latin American literature, anthropology, and cultural studies, as well as specialists in Spanish American intellectual history and colonial Latin America.Violence in the Work of Composition: Recognizing, Intervening, Ameliorating
Par Scott Gage, Kristie S. Fleckenstein. 2022
Focusing on overt and covert violence and bringing attention to the many ways violence inflects and infects the teaching, administration,…
and scholarship of composition, Violence in the Work of Composition examines both forms of violence and the reciprocal relationships uniting them across the discipline. Addressing a range of spaces, the collection features chapters on classroom practices, writing centers, and writing program administration, examining the complicated ways writing instruction is interwoven with violence, as well as the equally complicated ways writing teachers may recognize and resist the presence and influence of violence in their work. This book provides a focused, nuanced, and systematic discussion of violence and its presence and influence across pedagogical and administrative sites. Violence in the Work of Composition offers a close look at the nature of violence as it emerges in the work of composition; provides strategies for identifying violence, especially covert violence, addressing its impact and preventing its eruption across many sites; and invites readers to reflect on both the presence of violence and the hope for its cessation. Contributors consider, first, how compositionists can recognize the ways their work inadvertently enacts and/or perpetuates violence and, second, how they can intervene and mitigate that violence. Rich with the voices of myriad stakeholders, Violence in the Work of Composition initiates an essential conversation about violence and literacy education at a time when violence in its many forms continues to shape our culture, communities, and educational systems. Par Joyce Sebag, Jean-Pierre Durand. 2023
This book is an exploration of the intellectual resources offered by the hybridisation of sociology and cinema: practicing sociology, or…
other human sciences, through images and sound. In the age of the image, the book invites sociological research, not only through the discipline's approach, but also through the joint learning of techniques (shooting and sound recording, derushing, editing, etc.) and film writing. Using concrete examples, the authors analyse what it means to think through the image, explain the different phases of making a sociological documentary, and question, through sociological film, the representations of reality and, more specifically, what remains invisible in the social world. The result is a reflective look at the theories and practices presented, to better equip the sociologist-filmmaker. Illustrated with numerous photographs that mark the history of documentary photography and film, the book is intended for both teachers-researchers and students in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences who practice video and photography or wish to discover their uses. Students in documentary and film schools, as well as students on information and communication programs will also benefit from the book.AQA GCSE (9-1) Combined Science Trilogy Student Book 2

Par Tobias Sander. 2023
Engineers represent the (industrial) modern age like no other profession. In the German Empire and the Weimar Republic, however, the…
enormous numerical expansion of the profession was contrasted by comparatively unfavorable working conditions and incomes. This was particularly true of the graduate engineers, whose academization failed to meet industrial requirements. Can the völkisch, right-wing political radicalization of many technical experts on the eve of the 'Third Reich' actually be fully explained by these professional-social frictions?Data on the professional-social situation, consumption, leisure time and political behaviour of engineers in the higher and academic professions, which have been made available for the first time, already reveal the contours of late-modern, contemporary society in the period under consideration. This makes more complex explanatory approaches necessary and enables general insights into the dynamics of social crises. This study of (historical) professional, inequality, and political sociology is published in its third, fully revised edition. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. The History of Chinese Civilization (China Insights)

between primitive society and contemporary civilization, which makes it a unique academic works. From an academic point of view, this book is accurate in history and combines historical theories. Although brief, it captures the main thrust of the development of Chinese civilization and achieves a broad outline. Important figures, historical events, and achievements of civilization in all times are involved and discussed. From a theoretical point of view, based on the characteristics of early Chinese civilization, the book discusses the connotation of key concepts such as "civilization" and "Chinese civilization", which have certain theoretical value. From a contemporary and practical perspective, the book helps readers understand the history of Chinese civilization and promotes cultural exchanges between China and the world and leads to a better understanding of today’s China. This book highlights the importance of individual learner differences in learning English as a foreign language and reports the findings…
of a study which investigated the impact of two personality traits, which are, openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, on target language attainment among Polish secondary school students. The book provides an exhaustive overview of the theoretical issues and existing research related to personality, emphasizing the two traits under investigation, openness, and ambiguity tolerance, which are the focus of the empirical study reported later in the book. The empirical investigation explored relationships between openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, as well as their impact on attainment in learning English as a foreign language. Moreover, it also aimed to shed light on the link between these traits and students’ assessments (i.e., self-assessment and school grades). The findings of the study provide a basis for proposing specific profiles of foreign language learners with different levels of openness and ambiguity tolerance.Genomics Data Analysis for Crop Improvement (Springer Protocols Handbooks)

handling and sustainable agriculture. It describes important concepts in genomics data analysis and sequence-based mapping approaches along with references. The book contains 16 chapters on recent developments in several methods of genomic data analysis for crop improvements and sustainable agriculture, all authored by eminent researchers who are experts in their fields. These chapters focus on applications of a wide range of key bioinformatics topics, including assembly, annotation, and visualization of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data; expression profiles of coding and noncoding RNA; statistical and quantitative genetics; trait-based association analysis, quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping, and artificial intelligence in genomic studies. Real examples and case studies in the book will come in handy when applying the techniques. The relative scarcity of reference materials covering bioinformatics applications as compared with the readily available books also enhances the utility of this book. The targeted readers of the book are scientists, researchers, and bioinformaticians from genomics and advanced breeding in different areas. The book will appeal to the applied researchers engaged in crop improvements and sustainable agriculture by using bioinformatics tools, students, research project leaders, and practitioners from the various marginal disciplines and interdisciplinary research.Geographies of Food: Global Visions of Healthy and Unhealthy Food (Springer Geography)

Par Tatiana Signorelli Heise. 2024
This book investigates the role that cinemas in Brazil, Chile and Argentina have played in reconstructing memories of the most…
recent military dictatorships. These countries have undergone a distinctive post-dictatorship experience marked by unprecedented debates about human rights violations, the silencing of victims and accountability for state crimes. Meanwhile, politically committed filmmakers have created an extensive body of work addressing the dictatorship and its aftermath. This book employs a transnational and comparative approach to examine the strategies that these filmmakers have used to render visible what has remained hidden, to make reappear what has disappeared, and to reinterpret historical actors and events from a contemporary perspective. Through attention to the specific properties of the medium and the socio-historical context in which films have been made, it describes the different cinematic modes of remembering that emerged in response to wider memory frameworks in South America.Segmentation of the Aorta. the rescue of a family trying to flee Nazi Berlin, their lives linking up with a dazzling cast of 20th-century icons, all eagerly pursuing the American Dream.Family lore had it that Bonnie Siegler&’s grandfather crossed paths in Midtown Manhattan late one night in 1954 with Marilyn Monroe, her white dress flying up around her as she filmed a scene for The Seven Year Itch. An amateur filmmaker, Jules Schulback had his home movie camera with him, capturing what would become the only surviving footage of that legendary night. Bonnie wasn&’t sure she quite believed her grandfather&’s story…until, cleaning out his apartment, she found the film reel. The discovery would prompt her to investigate all of her grandfather&’s seemingly tall tales—and lead her in pursuit of a remarkable piece of forgotten history that reads like fiction but is all true. A &“fast-moving American epic with a cast of refugees and starlets, publishers and bootleggers, comic-book creators and sports legends&” (The Washington Post), The American Way follows two very different men—Jules Schulback and his unlikely benefactor, DC Comics publisher (and sometimes pornographer) Harry Donenfeld—on an exuberant true-life adventure linking glamorous old Hollywood, the birth of the comic book, and one family&’s experiences during the Holocaust. It&’s an &“amazing&” story told &“with grace, verve, and compassion&” (The Jerusalem Post) of two strivers living through an extraordinary moment in American history, their lives intersecting with a glittering array of stars in a &“colorful&” and &“punchy&” (The New York Times Book Review) tale of hope and reinvention, of daring escapes and fake identities, of big dreams and the magic of movies, and what it means to be a real-life Superman.
