Par Anna Halafoff, Elisabeth Arweck and Donald L. Boisvert. 2016
This volume presents the findings of a number of empirical and theoretical studies on education about religions and worldviews (ERW)…
conducted in the Western societies of Britain, Ireland, Canada, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Educational programmes about diverse religions and worldviews began to be investigated and implemented as strategies to encourage interreligious understanding and social cohesion, particularly following the 2005 London bombings when a fear of youth radicalisation and home-grown terrorism became prevalent. In addition, as a growing number of people in Western societies, and young people especially, declare themselves to have no religious affiliation, state actors are currently grappling with the reality that we are living in increasingly multifaith and non-religious societies and government education systems have become places of contestation as a result of these changes. This volume examines ERW research and policies in a number of diverse places in the hope of identifying common themes, overlapping insights and best practices that can inform research and policy for religious literacy and interreligious understanding in other contexts. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Intercultural Studies.Along the Way: The Life, Lessons, and Legacy of Father Hugh F. Crean
Par Mark S. Stelzer. 2022
Appealing to both the person in the pew and professional minister, Along the Way: The Life, Lessons, and Legacy of…
Father Hugh F. Crean explores the legacy of Vatican II (1962-1965) and its unfinished agenda. Written by a diverse group of contributors, including noted Church historian David O&’Brien and sociologist Mary Johnson, SNDdeN, the essays included in Along the Way challenge readers to reconsider the essence and form of priesthood, religious life, and ministry while pointing to themes Crean delivered throughout his 53 years of ministry. The book was prepared under the auspices of the Saint Augustine Center for Ethics, Religion, and Culture at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where Crean served as a faculty member.Far from Zion: In Search of a Global Jewish Community
Par Charles London. 2009
"Are you Jewish?"It was a question Charles London heard everywhere he went. Raised in a nonreligious Jewish family, London knew…
his heritage but had no strong desire to experience it personally. He even spent much of his teen years pretending not to be Jewish. But in the summer of 2004, while doing relief work with children in Bosnia, he stumbled upon a community the likes of which he had not seen before—where Jews worked alongside Muslims and Christians to rebuild a city ravaged by war. London liked this idea of a humanitarian Judaism, and though he didn't realize it at the time, this encounter gave him the idea for a journey that would take him around the world and back to his roots. The Jews' frequent flights from persecution have seen the establishment of communities in some of the most surprising places, and despite efforts by Israel to bring these scattered people home to Zion, many have chosen to remain in the land of their birth. From a shopkeeper selling Jewish trinkets in Iran, to a Hanukkah celebration in an Arkansas bowling alley; from Rangoon, where a fifty-seven-year-old chain-smoking caretaker keeps watch over an all-but-forgotten synagogue, to an engineering professor in Cuba proud of his Jewish heritage, yet even prouder of his Communist ideals, pockets of the Diaspora endure, despite intense pressure to flee. Their decision to stay put offers hope that peace may lie not in congregating behind borders but in the promise of a global community of neighbors. Far from Zion is the story of these Jews in far-flung places, and it's through their experiences that London examines his own identity. As he explores widespread Jewish communities struggling with their relationship to the larger world, he too grapples with his heritage and comes to terms with his own connection to Zion.Murderers In Mausoleums: Riding the Back Roads of Empire Between Moscow and Beijing
Par Jeffrey Tayler. 2008
A gripping journey through some of the planet&’s most remote and challenging terrain and its peoples, in search of why…
democracy has yet to thrive in lands it seemed so recently ready to overtake Across the largest landmass on earth, in lands once conquered by Genghis Khan and exploited by ruthless Communist regimes, autocratic and dictatorial states are again arising, growing wealthy on petrodollars and low-cost manufacturing. More and more, they are challenging theWest. Media reports focus on developments in Moscow and Beijing, but the peoples inhabiting the vast expanses in between remain mostly unseen and unheard, their daily lives and aspirations scarcely better known to us now than they were in ColdWar days.Tayler finds, among many others, a dissident Cossack advocating mass beheadings, a Muslim in Kashgar calling on the United States to bomb Beijing, and Chinese youths in Urumqi desiring nothing more than sex, booze, and rock &’n&’ roll—all while confronting over and over again the contradiction of people who value liberty and the free market but idealize tyrants who oppose both. From the steppes of southern Russia to the conflict-ridden Caucasus Mountains to the deserts of central Asia and northern China,Tayler shows that our maps have gone blank at the worst possible time. This book explores the emergence and growth of Zen as a non-monastic spiritual practice in modern Japan. Focusing on several…
prominent lay Zen associations, most notably Ningen Zen, it explores different aspects of lay Zen as a lived religion, such as organization, ideology, and ritual. Through a combined approach utilizing Buddhist text, historical sources, and ethnographic fieldwork, it explains how laypeople have appropriated religious authority and tailored Zen teachings to fit their needs and the zeitgeist.Featuring the findings of three years of fieldwork, interviews, and archival research, the book comprehensively describes various Zen practices and explores their contemporary meaning and functions. It undermines the distinction between traditional or established Buddhism and the so-called New Religions, emphasizing instead the dynamic relations between tradition and interpretation.Written in accessible language and offering insightful analysis, this book brings to light the essential role of lay Zen associations in modernizing Zen within Japan and beyond. It will be of interest to scholars and students of religious studies, particularly those studying Buddhism, Japanese society, and culture. How to Be Secular: A Call to Arms for Religious Freedom
Par Jacques Berlinerblau. 2012
Why secularism isn&’t the same thing as atheism—and why it&’s crucial for preserving liberty and democracy for all Americans, regardless…
of their beliefs. Founding father Thomas Jefferson believed that &“religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God,&” but these days many people seem to have forgotten this ideal. Conservatives claim America is a &“Christian nation&” and urge that laws be structured around religious convictions. Hardcore atheists, meanwhile, seek to undermine and attack religion at all levels. Surely there must be a middle ground. In How to Be Secular, Jacques Berlinerblau issues a call to the moderates—those who are tired of the belligerence on the fringes—that we return to America&’s long tradition of secularism, which seeks to protect both freedom from and for religion. He looks at the roots of secularism and examines how it should be bolstered and strengthened so that Americans of all stripes can live together peacefully. &“Jacques Berlinerblau mounts a careful, judicious, and compelling argument that America needs more secularists. . . . The author&’s argument merits a wide hearing and will change the way we think and talk about religious freedom.&” —Randall Balmer, author of Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious Right Distorts FaithandThreatens AmericaFrom an international church starter and pastor, a resource guide for anyone organizing a congregation as part of the organic…

Par Mookgo Solomon Kgatle. 2023
This book is an interdisciplinary study of the relationship between prophecy and politics in South African Pentecostalism. The role and…
the power of prophecy in enhancing the presence of politicians in the church square are unpacked through historical examples, as well as case studies of contemporary prophets. Solomon Kgatle argues that the influence of prophecy in politics has the potential to weaken the prophetic voice of the church in general and the Pentecostal movement in particular. He proposes a Pentecostal political theology of prophecy. This theology is developed by taking into cognizance the theoretical and theological frameworks of prophetic imagination and pneumatological imagination. In addition, this theology seeks a balance between prophecy and power and prophecy and sovereignty. This book explores the early evangelical quest for enlightenment by the Spirit and the Word. While the pursuit originated in…
the Protestant Reformation, it assumed new forms in the long eighteenth-century context of the early Enlightenment and transatlantic awakened Protestant reform. This work illuminates these transformations by focusing on the dynamic intersection of experimental philosophy and experimental religion in the biblical practices of early America’s most influential Protestant theologians, Cotton Mather (1663-1728) and Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758). As the first book-length project to treat Mather and Edwards together, this study makes an important contribution to the extensive scholarship on these figures, opening new perspectives on the continuities and complexities of colonial New England religion. It also provides new insights and interpretive interventions concerning the history of the Bible, early modern intellectual history, and evangelicalism’s complex relationship to the Enlightenment.Let My Nation Begin

Par Jane Tomaine. 2005
When St. Benedict formed his first small community of monks at Monte Cassino on the hilltop, Italy--and much of Europe--was…
ravaged by war. The Roman Empire was breaking apart, and politics, cultural life, and even the Church, were all in disarray. In the midst of these tumultuous times, Benedict offered his followers a “little rule,” a guide about the size of a checkbook, that showed his monks the way to peace as they learned to prefer Christ above all things. Though it was written nearly 1500 years ago, the Rule of Benedict still offers the practical tools for living a Christ-centered today. Here in St. Benedict’s Toolbox, readers will find a primer on how to use these tools in their own tumultuous lives. Each chapter examines one aspect of the Rule, from ways of praying to ways of embracing humility, and offers suggestions for prayer, reflection, journaling, and action. As they learn to use Benedict’s tools, readers will discover the power--and the timeliness--of this ancient way of life. The Christian Universe
Par E. L. Mascall, Eric Mascall. 1966
The Christian Universe is an unabashed defense of Christianity against the unbelief and indifference of our age: all who would…
deny human freedom and responsibility; all who would maintain that life and existence are meaningless; and all who (under whatever banner) would persuade us that the secular is all in all, or that nothing beyond our own immediate empirical world can be known. Under Mascall’s lens, those who hold such positions are seen as offering a dreary and impoverished universe, “quite incapable of satisfying our needs and aspirations.” In contrast, he upholds “the wonder and glory of Christianity,” its unique revelation and reconciliation with God as the heart of the cosmic process, and its faith not a defiance or negation of the world, but an affirmation that there is meaning to the world. The Triune Identity: God According to the Gospel
Par Robert W. Jenson. 2002
This book presents a bold venture in theology, combining a presentation, explanation, analysis, and reinterpretation of trinitarian language. Rejecting the…
assumption that traditional trinitarian discourse is useless in an age of cults and sects, Jenson points to a profound and provocative renewal of trinitarian piety and reflection understood as a remedy for spiritual desolation and powerlessness. Proceeding on the premise that any radical analysis of the formula "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit" must work from biblical statements, Jenson investigates the significance of two biblical identifications of God: "God is whoever freed us from Egypt" and "God is whoever raised Jesus from the dead." In opposition to the notion that God is to be understood simply as timeless being, Jenson shows how the memory of God's acts and the presence of God in Christ leads to a hope for the future based on the promise of the Spirit.Moon Scotland: Highland Road Trips, Outdoor Adventures, Pubs and Castles (Travel Guide)

Par Nicolette Miele. 2024
A magickal guide to working with runes and plant allies for manifestation, healing, and spellwork• Examines the herb and plant…
connections of each of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark as well as correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, and crystals • Provide examples and tips on how runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more • Explains how runes and plants can be worked with for the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature Runes and plants both contain the dynamic and raw energies of Mother Earth and can be used to heal, manifest, protect, and elevate magick. Both support and deepen the nature-human connection that is vital to mind, body, and spirit. And while both can provide us with many benefits on their own, when merged in magickal union, their combined powers are multiplied exponentially. In this magickal grimoire, herbalist witch Nicolette Miele immerses readers in the wisdom and folklore of the 24 Elder Futhark runes as well as their correspondences with deities, astrology, tarot, crystals, and plants. Each chapter begins by discussing the etymology, meanings, mythology, divination, correspondences, and magick of a particular rune and culminates with profiles of several herbs and plants that possess similar magickal energies. Each plant profile delves into the magickal, metaphysical, traditional, and medicinal applications as well as how to work with these incredible plant allies. These profiles also provide examples and tips on how the runes and plants may be combined within spells and ritual for manifesting, protecting, healing, banishing, and more. For example, the author connects Fehu, the rune of wealth and value, with the practice of altar-building, making offerings, and with alfalfa, cedar, dandelion, and other plants traditionally used in abundance and prosperity magick. In the chapter on Kenaz, the rune of heat and illumination, the nature connection is nurtured through the element of fire and a step-by-step bindrune candle ritual. The plants connected with Kenaz are those that embody the characteristics of fire—such as passion, ferocity, and sexuality—and include clove, damiana, and kava kava. Guiding the green witch through the benefits and strengths of synergistic magick, this book helps eclectic magickal practitioners advance their craft through folk magick and medicine, rituals, meditations, spells, and the soulful process of rewilding and connecting with Mother Nature.Praying Through Infertility: A 90-Day Devotional for Men and Women
