Big Food: Critical perspectives on the global growth of the food and beverage industry
Par Simon N. Williams and Marion Nestle. 2016
Obesity is a global public health problem of crucial importance. Obesity rates remain high in high-income countries and are rapidly…
increasing in low- and middle- income countries. Concurrently, the global consumption of unhealthy products, such as soft drinks and processed foods, continues to rise. The ongoing expansion of multinational food and beverage companies, or ‘Big Food’, is a key factor behind these trends. This collection provides critical insight into the global expansion of ‘Big Food’, including its incursion into low-and-middle income countries. It examines the changing dynamics of the global food supply, and discusses how low-income countries can alter the ‘Big Food’-diet from the bottom-up. It examines a number of issues related to ‘Big Food’ marketing strategies, including the way in which they advertise to youths and the rural poor. These issues are discussed in terms of their public health implications, and their relation to public health activities, for example ‘soda taxes’, and the promotion of nutritionally-healthier products. This book was originally published as a special issue of Critical Public Health. The Last Word on Eating Disorders Prevention
Par Leigh Cohn. 2017
For the first time in one volume, many of the world’s most esteemed eating disorders prevention experts share their opinions…
and recommendations about future directions for the field. Employing "The Last Word" format of writing concise editorials about a focused area of research, authors from four countries contribute thirteen chapters with diverse points of view. The approaches range from large scale, macro-environmental calls for change through public policy to the more intimate promotion of positive youth identity for buffering against eating disorders. Included are retrospective looks at the development of prevention programs with an eye toward best practices moving forward, calls for integrating eating disorders interventions with existing efforts in the obesity and health promotion fields, examples of successful change through public policy and social justice, and a cry for gender inclusiveness, which has missing in female dominated strategies. More personal-level recommendations look at the efficacy of mindfulness, yoga, intuitive eating and exercise, and the importance of forming healthy self-identity. Informed by decades of investigation, the authors—all of whom have conducted numerous studies, programs, and research projects—offer the insights they’ve learned and the lessons that they each believe will make a difference in reducing eating disorders. This book was originally published as a special issue of Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.A comprehensive cookbook and guide to the flavors and health benefits of the Mediterranean diet—with one hundred recipes plus regional…

help you prevent disease, bounce back from illness, and manage life's ups and downs—all while achieving a greater sense of well-being, now and for the rest of your life. There's no way around it: the human body is designed to get sick. Illness is the body's way of calling attention to a bigger problem. Aches and pains—whether annoying or debilitating, acute or chronic—mean that something's out of balance. What they don't mean is that you're not in control. Because your body takes its cues from your thoughts and emotions—and not the other way around—you can take control of your health, rather than letting your health take control of you. In Your Health Destiny, Dr. Eva Selhub shows you how. After treating thousands of patients with a myriad of health problems—from heart disease and cancer to depression and anxiety—Dr. Selhub discovered that simple and easy-to-implement shifts in lifestyle, attitude, and overall approach to stress not only reduce your reliance on conventional medicine but, more important, prevent and reverse all types of disease before they can take root. Bringing together timeless Eastern practices with cutting-edge Western research, Dr. Selhub teaches you how to tap into the powerful connection between your mind and body, and, in the process, jump-start your body's built-in healing capabilities. Proactive and prescriptive, this revolutionary program puts the power of health back into your hands, now and for the rest of your life. The 30 Plan: Why eating 30 plants a week will revolutionise your gut health
