Par Richard, Duncan-Jones. 2016
How far were appointments in the Roman Empire based on merit? Did experience matter? What difference did social rank make?…
This innovative study of the Principate examines the career outcomes of senators and knights by social category. Contrasting patterns emerge from a new database of senatorial careers. Although the highest appointments could reflect experience, a clear preference for the more aristocratic senators is also seen. Bias is visible even in the major army commands and in the most senior civilian posts nominally filled by ballot. In equestrian appointments, successes by the less experienced again suggest the power of social advantage. Senatorial recruitment gradually opened up to include many provincials but Italians still kept their hold on the higher social groupings. The book also considers the senatorial career more widely, while a final section examines slave careers and the phenomenon of voluntary slavery. How to Write a Business Plan

Par James Jeffrey. 2007
For James Jeffrey, his mother?s homeland of Hungary has always featured in family stories ? sometimes as a fairytale land,…
other times as an exotic parallel universe. It is a place where storks build nests as large as tables on chimney tops and grandparents live in suburbs called Uranium Town. People say `hello? when they mean `goodbye?, have no word for `he? or `she?, and bestow an almost godlike status on cakes and lard.It is the country where James?s mother, a volatile divorcee who could outflirt Zsa Zsa Gabor, and his father, a coal miner from a particularly sensible part of England, began an unlikely romance that lasted until the other end of the earth. With his wife, children and still-warring parents in tow, James decided that the time had come to go back to Hungary. Their journey into the little-known paprika paradise is hilarious, thought-provoking and completely unpredictable.`Joyous, illuminating and enchanting? Par Alison Hill. 2016
Tools, tips and strategies to stop the cycle of 'busy' and start getting ahead Stand Out shows you how to…
stop working so much, and start achieving instead. Everyone is busy, but working harder to do more isn't getting us anywhere. We're overwhelmed, distracted and detached, and our greatest fear is that this will never change. This book is your guide to taking back your life. Through simple models, robust diagnostics and practical suggestions you'll identify where you are now and how to implement real change. Explore how to move on from Check Out (the sense that you are just going through the motions), combat Burn Out (the feeling that you're on a treadmill that is dialled too fast for your legs, brain and talents to keep pace with) and move through Freak Out (that overriding anxiety generated by knowing where you want to go but not getting any traction). Real-life stories, anecdotes and 'life hacks' provide ideas you can implement immediately, while in-depth discussion of psychological theory explains the science behind the actions. The goal is not to find your One True Passion, but to identify what's most important right now. When you're clear on purpose and actually making progress, you hit the sweet spot of activity that allows your talents to shine. The concept of 'being at work' has changed. We're expected to be plugged in 24/7, and continually expected to do more and more with the same 24 hours in every day. Organisations suffer, families suffer and workers suffer - so why do we perpetuate this cycle? This book shows you how to hop off the hamster wheel and thrive through relentless change by doing less - but by doing it smarter. Treat self-care as an imperative for success Connect to what's important here and now Stop day-dreaming and put action to purpose Take control of your day, your path and your life It's not about productivity training or the latest organisational system - it's about having the tools, mindset and skills in place to make your activities work for you. Stand Out helps you find the courage and optimism to live the life you crave, let go of the 'shoulds' and shows you how to prioritise what really matters.Interview Questions in Business Analytics

Par Cees Nooteboom. 2012
It is said that during his abortive campaign to invade Britannia, the infamous Roman emperor Caligula ordered his legions into…
the surf to attack Poseidon and claim seashells as trophies of war. Cees Nooteboom is considerably more thoughtful in his relationship with the god of the sea. As autumn falls each year, Nooteboom writes Poseidon a letter requesting permission to return to his home in Minorca the following spring.Of course, it would be the height of discourtesy if Nooteboom's letters were no more than a series of demands. So Cees takes the opportunity to seek the wisdom of the trident-wielding deity, and to offer the god updates about his own life and thoughts. At once playful and poignant, beautiful and at times slightly bizarre, this masterful exploration of humankind's relationship with the sea uses the minutiae of everyday life to illuminate the broadest questions of human existence, all couched in the lapidary prose of one of Europe's outstanding stylists.Atlas of Lost Cities: A Travel Guide to Abandoned and Forsaken Destinations

Roads to Berlin maps the changing landscape of post-World-War-II Germany, from the period before the fall of the Berlin Wall…
to the present. Written and updated over the course of several decades, an eyewitness account of the pivotal events of 1989 gives way to a perceptive appreciation of its difficult passage to reunification.Nooteboom's writings on politics, people, architecture, and culture are as digressive as they are eloquent; his innate curiosity takes him through the landscapes of Heine and Goethe, steeped in Romanticism and mythology, and to Germany's baroque cities. With an outsider's objectivity he has crafted an intimate portrait of the country to its present day. From the Hardcover edition.
