Cooking alla Giudia: A Celebration of the Jewish Food of Italy
Par Benedetta Jasmine Guetta. 2022
Cooking alla Giudia is the ultimate tribute to the wonderfully rich, yet still largely unknown, culinary heritage of the Jews of…
Italy. From Roman deep-fried artichokes (carciofi alla giudia) to Venetian sarde in saor (sweet-and-sour sardines), Apulian orecchiette pasta, and Sicilian caponata, some of Italy&’s best-known dishes are Jewish in origin. But little is known about the Jewish people in Italy and their culinary traditions. It was the Jews, for example, who taught Italians to eat the eggplant, and thus helped inspire the classic eggplant parmigiana and many other local specialties. With a collection of kosher recipes from all regions of Italy, including plenty of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, author Benedetta Jasmine Guetta is on a mission to tell the story of how the Jews changed Italian food, to preserve these recipes, and to share with home cooks the extraordinary dishes prepared in the Jewish communities of Italy. Highlighted throughout the book are menus with regional Italian specialties, along with short, useful guides to the Italian cities with Jewish history. The book will show how to integrate the recipes into your everyday meals and holiday traditions as well.Moon Prague, Vienna & Budapest (Travel Guide)

&“A blistering thriller that follows a group of teenagers on an adventure through an apocalyptic America much like our own.&”…
―Entertainment Weekly Bestselling author of Before the Fall and Emmy Award-winning screenwriter Noah Hawley (FX&’s Fargo) returns with a chilling and prophetic allegory of America as it is now and as it could be. It begins with a Song... A man known as the Wizard, whose past encounter with Louise sparked her own collapse. Their quest becomes a rescue mission as those most in danger race to save one life – and the country&’s future. Anthem is rich with unforgettably vivid characters, as fast and bright as pop cinema. Par Theresa Brown. 2022
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Shift comes a frank look at navigating the world of healthcare…
as a cancer nurse becomes a patient and experiences the system from the other side. Despite her training and years of experience as an oncology and hospice nurse, Brown finds it difficult to navigate the medical maze from the other side of the bed. Why is she so often left in the dark about procedures and treatments? Why is she expected to research her own best treatment options? Why is there so much red tape? At times she&’s mad at herself for not speaking up and asking for what she needs but knows that being a &“difficult&” patient could mean she gets worse care. Of the almost four million women in this country living with breast cancer, many have had, like Brown, a treatable form of the disease. Both unnerving and extremely relatable, her experience shows us how our for-profit health care industry &“cures&” us but at the same time leaves so many of us feeling alienated and uncared for. As she did so brilliantly in her New York Times bestseller, The Shift, Brown relays the unforgettable details of her daily life—the needles, the chemo drugs, the rubber gloves, the bureaucratic frustrations—but this time from her new perch as a patient, looking back at some of her own cases and considering what she didn&’t know then about the warping effects of fear and the healing virtues of compassion. &“People failed me when I was a patient and I failed patients when working as a nurse. I see that now,&” she writes.Healing is must-read for all of us who have tried to find healing through our health-care system.Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea

Par Gregory Pardlo. 2024
A powerful meditation on Blackness, beauty, faith, and the force of law, from the beloved award-winning author of Digest and…
Air TrafficElegant, profound, and intoxicating—Spectral Evidence, Gregory Pardlo&’s first major collection of poetry after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Digest, moves fluidly among considerations of the pro-wrestler Owen Hart; Tituba, the only Black woman to be accused of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials; MOVE, the movement and militant separatist group famous for its violent stand-offs with the Philadelphia Police Department (&“flames rose like orchids . . . / blocks lay open like egg cartons&”); and more.At times cerebral and at other times warm, inviting and deeply personal, Spectral Evidence compels us to consider how we think about devotion, beauty and art; about the criminalization and death of Black bodies; about justice—and about how these have been inscribed into our present, our history, and the Western canon: &“If I could be / the forensic dreamer / . . . / . . . my art would be a mortician&’s / paints.&”Capturing the electric short fiction energy that led Robert E. Howard to be one of the top fantasy writers of…
the century, with exclusive serialized eBook stories starring Conan, Solomon Kane, and more by many of today&’s top writers in fantasy and sword-and-sorcery.&“Conan: The Shadow of Vengeance&” is an intended follow-up to &“The Devil in Iron.&” A classic sword and sorcery tale by Robert E. Howard himself. In far eastern Turan, the regent of Khawarzim seeks bloody revenge. To achieve it, Ghaznavi is willing to strike a bargain with Karash Khan, the master of the Nine—acolytes of the god of Death, their powers and ruthlessness are spoken of only in whispers. The object of Ghaznavi's hatred rides at the head of a score of Zaporoskan kozaks, bandits formed from fleeing criminals, escaped slaves, and deserting soldiers. Men of many crimes and countries. Their leader is accompanied by Octavia, a statuesque royal from Nemedia whose devotion to him is without question. The object of Ghaznavi&’s burning hatred is Conan of Cimmeria. The Fabulous Fannie Farmer: Kitchen Scientist and America’s Cook
Par Emma Bland Smith. 2024
Fannie Farmer, America&’s most famous cooking teacher, discovers that precise measurements are a recipe for cooking success in this STEAM…
picture book that includes two of her classic recipes. When Fannie Farmer learned to cook in the late 1800s, recipes could be pretty silly. They might call for &“a goodly amount of salt&” or &“a lump of butter&” or &“a suspicion of nutmeg.&” Girls were supposed to use their &“feminine instincts&” in the kitchen (or maybe just guess). Despite this problem, Fannie loved cooking, so when polio prevented her from going to college, she became a teacher at the Boston Cooking School. Unlike her mother or earlier cookbook writers, Fannie didn&’t believe in feminine instincts. To her, cooking was a science. She&’d noticed that precise measurements and specific instructions ensured that cakes rose instead of flopped and doughnuts fried instead of burned. Students liked Fannie&’s approach so much that she wrote a cookbook. Despite skepticism from publishers, Fannie&’s book was a recipe for success.Written with humor and brought to life with charming illustrations, this book explores the origins of Fannie Farmer&’s quintessentially American cookbook. A cookbook that was beloved because it allowed anyone to make tasty things, with no guessing, no luck—and certainly no feminine instincts—required. The Last Stand

Par Artem Chapeye. 2024
A stunning debut collection of fiction and creative nonfiction— irreverent and unglorified; loving and tender; uncomfortable and inconvenient—by a Ukrainian…
writer currently fighting for his country in Kyiv. Includes the celebrated title story "The Ukraine," which was published in the New Yorker in 2022.The Ukraine is a collection of 26 pieces that deliberately blur the line between nonfiction and fiction, conjuring the essence of a beloved country through its tastes, smells, and sounds, its small towns and big cities, its people and their compassion and indifference, simplicities and complications. In the title story, Chapeye facetiously plays with the English misuse of the article &“the&” in reference to Ukraine, capturing a country as perceived from the outside, by foreigners. That pseudo-kitsch, often historically shallow, and not-quite-real Ukraine resonates because of its highly engaging and brutally candid snapshots of ordinary lives and typical places. In &“One Soul per Home&” an elderly woman laments that the men are dying and the young are leaving for the cities, changing the face of her small town;In &“The Unscrupulous Spirit of the Provinces,&” a couple of unspecified gender get stoned and go to church; and in &“False Premises,&” a man romanticizes his younger years working for a Soviet fishing fleet only to reconstruct his nostalgia in the face of Putin&’s Russia. The Ukraine conveys to readers a place that Chapeye and his countrymen are currently fighting for with their lives. The book features a preface by the author, which he composed on his phone from the front lines.School Moms: Parent Activism, Partisan Politics, and the Battle for Public Education
Par Laura Pappano. 2024
An on-the-ground look at the rise of parent activism in response to the far-right attacks on public school educationFor well…
over a century, public schools have been a non-partisan gathering place and vital center of civic life in America--but something has changed. In School Moms, journalist Laura Pappano explores the on-the-ground story of how public schools across the country have become ground zero in a cultural and political war as the far-right have made efforts to seek power over school boards.Pappano argues that the rise of parent activism is actually the culmination of efforts that began in the 1990s after campaigns to stop sex education largely fizzled. Recent efforts to make public schools more responsive and inclusive, as well as the pandemic, have offered openings the far-right have been waiting for to organize and sway parents, who are frustrated and exhausted by remote learning, objections by teacher&’s unions, and shifting directives from school leaders. Groups like Moms for Liberty and Parents Defending Education are organizing against revised history curricula they have dubbed as "CRT," banning books, pressing for "Don't Say Gay" laws, and asserting "parental rights" to gain control over the review of classroom materials. On the other side, progressive groups like Support Our Schools and Red, Wine & Blue are mobilizing parents to counter such moves.Combining on-the-ground reporting with research and expert interviews, School Moms will take a hard look at where these battles are happening, what is at stake, and why it matters for the future of our schools.Sex on the First Date: A Story of a Broken Beginning to a Radically Transformed Marriage

Par W. Montgomery Watt. 1998
This text gives a formative account of the development of Islamic thought from the death of Muhammad in 632, to…
950. It demonstrates how various religions and political movements within Islam contributed to what has become standard form, including the positive contribution of sects later regarded as heretical, and the key interaction of religion and politics. Par Majda Khalil Suleiman, Shabbir Ahmad Shahid. 2023
This book is an outcome of collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team of scientists. The core objective of this book…
is to provide cross-sectoral information on the different aspects of the terrestrial environment and ecosystems of Kuwait. The book will be considered as a ready source of information for those seeking information on the terrestrial environment and ecosystems, assessment and restoration, as well as sustainable uses and management. In spite of Kuwait’s hyper-arid environment, it is rich in natural resources including a wide range of native plants, animal species, different habitats, protected areas, diversified soils and water and oil resources. While the desert of Kuwait constitutes various features, such as sand sheet, sand dunes, nebkhas, inland and coastal sabkhas, rock outcrop, wadis and farming areas, it is rich in flora and fauna (native plants, mammals, birds, reptiles, etc.). Due to changing climate, deserts of Kuwait as well as other countries are under severe threat of degradation and the degradation may be irreversible. To realize these impacts, an effort is being made to provide a ready source of information to highlight the potential threats to the terrestrial ecosystems and formulate adaptation and mitigation strategies for long-term ecosystems services in Kuwait as well as other countries located in a desert environment, such as Gulf Cooperation Council Countries, Africa and countries in the Arab region. The book includes sixteen chapters covering multidiscipline subjects (such as natural resources, climate and climate change, geographical features, terrestrial habitats, ecosystems and threats, water and soil resources, agriculture, food security, water-energy-food-climate nexus, green-grey-blue water footprints of various crops, etc.). Thus, this book is a unique resource that provides the latest scientific information in a single volume.
