Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, and Health Informatics: ICEBEHI 2023, 4–5 October, Surabaya, Indonesia (Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering #1182)

Par Muhammad Aamer Mehmood, Pradeep Verma, Maulin P. Shah, Michael J. Betenbaugh. 2024
Cyanobacteria are the extraordinary microbes that are believed to have started life on Earth. It's been billions of years since…
they colonized this planet. Now, the question arises, what has made them so successful? The answer to this question lies in their remarkable potential to survive unfavorable environments, their substantial ability to fix the atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis, and their amazing secondary metabolites having antioxidant, osmo-protectants, and stress-tolerance abilities. Research on cyanobacteria has shown that these secondary metabolites and the substantial photosynthetic rates of cyanobacteria can be exploited for environmental, industrial, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications. This book “Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Potential of Cyanobacteria” is a collection of 14 book chapters that have covered almost all aspects related to the opportunities, challenges, and potential applications whileemploying cyanobacteria as feedstock for various industrial and environmental applications with a special focus on pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Some sections have also covered the enhanced biosynthesis, extraction, storage, and marketing of the cyanobacterial bioactive compounds (phycobilins, carotenoids, fatty acids, amino acids), and applications of cyanobacteria as food/feed of the future. We believe that this book will provide substantial learning opportunities to the readers including graduate students, academicians, phycologists, policymakers, environmental entrepreneurs, and industrialists. This book could be included in SDG 12 publications. This Springer essential explains the theoretical foundations for knowledge-based interpretation of medical laboratory data. and immunological network theories make it possible to describe pathomechanisms and diagnostics, especially of chronic diseases, as an expression of a phenotypic biology and to develop concepts for causal therapies. The book shows how CSF diagnostics with a diagnostic report integrating all laboratory data can identify disease-typical patterns for the differential diagnosis of bacterial, viral, parasitic, oncological, chronic inflammatory, autoimmunological and psychiatric diseases. A CSF app is provided as a tutorial program. The translation from German was done with the help of artificial intelligence. do in the face of suspected Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT). This textbook includes consideration of the size of the problem, MSHT indicators, important communication skills, the reporting of suspected cases and organisations working in the field. The majority of victims of MSHT come into contact with healthcare professionals (HCPs) at some point in their journey but HCPs report feeling ill equipped to recognise or manage a potential victim, (90% of victims of MSHT come into contact with a HCP but only 10% of HCPs know how to recognise victims and what to do). As such this topic should be represented in undergraduate and post graduate curricula. This textbook deals with the identification and appropriate management of suspected cases. It has been edited by Prof Alison Fiander and Ms Jane Lasonder and written by Healthcare professionals, Medical Students from the School of Medicine, Cardiff University as part of a Student Selected Component, Survivors of MSHT, and organisations working in the Human Trafficking field, including the UN.Glissonean Pedicles Approach in Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery
Par Benedetto Ielpo, Edoardo Rosso, Alessandro Anselmo. 2023
Aim of this book is to present the main minimally invasive approaches to the Glissonean pedicles. This kind of technique…
for hepatectomy has been gaining interest in recent years and may represent the ideal method to achieve anatomical liver resections. Currently the most performed procedure for liver surgery is still the classic intrafascial approach in which, after entering the Glissonean sheath, the portal triad elements are singularly dissected and isolated. However, this is a quite challenging technique to pursue in a minimally invasive setting. Nowadays the laparoscopic and robotic approach for liver resections are increasing worldwide and the intra or extra hepatic Glissonean approach, in which the portal triad elements are dissected and isolated “en bloc” without entering the Glissonean sheath, can facilitate the surgical technique. Furthermore this strategy allows better identification of the ischemic area and could decrease blood loss during dissection, as the liver inflow is kept under control. This book includes a step-by-step description of each pedicle isolation and section, with original laparoscopic and robotic pictures and videos. HPB surgeons who are interested in this technique may find these pages, written in cooperation with some of the most prominent worldwide experts, to be highly informative and valuable.

Pharmacology Clear And Simple: A Guide To Drug Classifications And Dosage Calculations

Par Gregory Royal Pratt. 2024
"Gregory Pratt had a rare front-row seat to the passions, problems, peculiarities, hopes, disappointments, shenanigans, and pettiness in the drama…
and farce that was Lori Lightfoot's uneasy tenure on the fifth floor at City Hall. What he delivers on these pages takes us backstage to give us a powerful, incisive portrait of the woman, the details of her mayoralty, and the many players who shared the stage." —Rick Kogan, Chicago Tribune reporter and author of A Chicago Tavern Chicago is a world-class city, but it is also a city in crisis. Crime is up, schools have repeatedly shut down due to conflict between City Hall and the powerful teachers' union, and COVID-19 only deepened the entrenched poverty, institutional racism, and endless tug of war between the city's haves and have nots. For four years, the person at the center of this storm was Lori Lightfoot. A groundbreaking figure—the first Black, gay woman to be elected mayor of a major city and only the second female mayor of Chicago—she knew the city was at a critical turning point when she took office in 2019. But the once-in-a-lifetime challenges she ended up facing were beyond anything she or anyone else saw coming. Chicago Tribune reporter Gregory Royal Pratt offers the first comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the tumultuous single term of Mayor Lightfoot and the chaos that roiled the city and City Hall as she fought to live up to her promises to change the city's culture of corruption and villainy, reform its long-troubled police department, and make Chicago the safest big city in America. Some of Chicago's problems can be explained by forces greater than the mayor: national polarization, long-standing cultural and racial tensions, our plague years. But some are the result of Lightfoot's poor leadership at City Hall, a story that hasn't been told in full—until now.Asphyxia in Neonates

armpit led to the development of antiseptics.Robert Jenkin's ear started a war.All too often, historical figures feel distant and abstract; more myth and legend than real flesh and blood. These stories of bodies and its parts remind us that history's most-loved, and most-hated, were real breathing creatures who inhabited organs and limbs just like us - until they're cut off that is.Medical historian Dr Suzie Edge investigates over 40 cases of how we've used, abused, dug up, displayed, experimented on, and worshipped body parts, including why Percy Shelley's heart refused to burn; how Yao Niang's toes started a 1000 year long ritual; why a giant's bones are making us rethink medical ethics; and the strange case of Hitler's right testicle.
End Acid Reflux: End gastroesophageal reflux.

Par Cathryn Jakobson Ramin. 2017
The acclaimed author of Carved in Sand—a veteran investigative journalist who endured persistent back pain for decades—delivers the definitive book…
on the subject: an essential examination of all facets of the back pain industry, exploring what works, what doesn't, what may cause harm, and how to get on the road to recovery. In her effort to manage her chronic back pain, investigative reporter Cathryn Jakobson Ramin spent years and a small fortune on a panoply of treatments. But her discomfort only intensified, leaving her feeling frustrated and perplexed. As she searched for better solutions, she exposed a much bigger problem. Costing roughly $100 billion a year, spine medicine—often ineffective and sometimes harmful —exemplified the worst aspects of the U.S. health care system. The result of six years of intensive investigation, Crooked offers a startling look at the poorly identified risks of spine medicine, and provides practical advice and solutions. Ramin interviewed scores of spine surgeons, pain management doctors, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, exercise physiologists, physical therapists, chiropractors, specialized bodywork practitioners. She met with many patients whose pain and desperation led them to make life-altering decisions, and with others who triumphed over their limitations. The result is a brilliant and comprehensive book that is not only important but essential to millions of back pain sufferers, and all types of health care professionals. Ramin shatters assumptions about surgery, chiropractic methods, physical therapy, spinal injections and painkillers, and addresses evidence-based rehabilitation options—showing, in detail, how to avoid therapeutic dead ends, while saving money, time, and considerable anguish. With Crooked, she reveals what it takes to outwit the back pain industry and get on the road to recovery.Sontag: Her Life and Work

the Best Books of the Year by: O Magazine, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Seattle TimesThe definitive portrait of one of the American Century’s most towering intellectuals: her writing and her radical thought, her public activism and her hidden private faceNo writer is as emblematic of the American twentieth century as Susan Sontag. Mythologized and misunderstood, lauded and loathed, a girl from the suburbs who became a proud symbol of cosmopolitanism, Sontag left a legacy of writing on art and politics, feminism and homosexuality, celebrity and style, medicine and drugs, radicalism and Fascism and Freudianism and Communism and Americanism, that forms an indispensable key to modern culture. She was there when the Cuban Revolution began, and when the Berlin Wall came down; in Vietnam under American bombardment, in wartime Israel, in besieged Sarajevo. She was in New York when artists tried to resist the tug of money—and when many gave in. No writer negotiated as many worlds; no serious writer had as many glamorous lovers. Sontag tells these stories and examines the work upon which her reputation was based. It explores the agonizing insecurity behind the formidable public face: the broken relationships, the struggles with her sexuality, that animated—and undermined—her writing. And it shows her attempts to respond to the cruelties and absurdities of a country that had lost its way, and her conviction that fidelity to high culture was an activism of its own. Utilizing hundreds of interviews conducted from Maui to Stockholm and from London to Sarajevo—and featuring nearly one hundred images—Sontag is the first book based on the writer’s restricted archives, and on access to many people who have never before spoken about Sontag, including Annie Leibovitz. It is a definitive portrait—a great American novel in the form of a biography. The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body
