Par Aby Mitchell, Georgina Ritchie, Alison Hopkins. 2024
Lower Limb and Leg Ulcer Assessment and Management Lower Limb and Leg Ulcer Assessment and Management is an indispensable resource…
for practitioners in primary and secondary care, offering a practical and accessible guide to treating and managing leg ulcers. This comprehensive text challenges the misconception that leg ulcers are invariably ‘chronic’. In practice, proactive management will prevent the harm associated with sub-optimal management. Insights are provided into lower limb assessment, early intervention for ulcer prevention, ulcer types and their causes, along with the influence that swelling and biomechanical changes have on the lower limb. The authors draw on international best practice guidance on lymphoedema, wound pain, wound bed preparation, compression therapy, psychological impact, and evidence-based care to enhance leg ulcer management. Each chapter aims to facilitate reader comprehension and promote productive patient discussions, empowering healthcare professionals to collaborate with patients and improve leg ulcer management rapidly and effectively. This multi-disciplinary resource covers: Normal venous, arterial, and lymphatic function in the lower leg Leg ulceration due to venous hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, and lymphoedema Leg ulcers of unusual aetiology, addressing autoimmune and inflammatory disorders such as pyoderma gangrenosum, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sickle cell, and more Musculoskeletal changes in the lower limb, assessment, and management to enhance mobility and calf-muscle function Clinical management, with topics like wound management, stages of wound healing, exudate management, holistic assessment including vascular assessment, compression therapy, and Laplace’s law Pain management with an emphasis on understanding the complexities and features that exacerbate or diminish the pain response The personalisation of care, understanding of social determinants of health, and the role of supportive self-management in lifelong management For professionals seeking evidence-informed approaches to delivering exceptional care, Lower Limb and Leg Ulcer Assessment and Management is an essential companion on the journey to understanding and managing leg ulcers effectively.Animal Welfare in a Pandemic: What Does COVID-19 Tell us for the Future? (CRC One Health One Welfare)
Par John T. Hancock, Ros C. Rouse, Tim J. Craig. 2024
Animal Welfare in a Pandemic explores the impact of COVID-19 on a wide array of animals, from those in the…
wild to companion and captive animals. During the height of the pandemic, a range of animals were infected, and many died, but this was hard to predict, even using up-to-date bioinformatics. Lockdowns around the world had, and continue to have, a major effect on animals’ welfare, influencing pet ownership and care, as well as impacting on the work of conservation institutes due to the lack of visitors and funding and lack of tourist presence in the wild which impacted on anti-poaching efforts. Some of the vast amount of personal protection equipment (PPE) that was distributed was discarded, creating both dangers and occasional opportunities for wild animals. With the rollout of human vaccines, some countries started developing animal vaccines, only some of which were deployed. In summary, the pandemic had a wide-ranging influence on animal welfare around the world. This is reviewed to highlight what can be learned to protect and enhance animal welfare in future epidemics/pandemics, and contribute to a genuinely One Health approach where the health and welfare of both humans and animals are considered holistically. This book is authored by members of the University of the West of England, Bristol, who span a range of expertise in Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Animal Welfare, and Ethics.COVID-19 in South Asia: Society, Economics and Politics

Par Muhammad Aamer Mehmood, Pradeep Verma, Maulin P. Shah, Michael J. Betenbaugh. 2024
Cyanobacteria are the extraordinary microbes that are believed to have started life on Earth. It's been billions of years since…
they colonized this planet. Now, the question arises, what has made them so successful? The answer to this question lies in their remarkable potential to survive unfavorable environments, their substantial ability to fix the atmospheric carbon through photosynthesis, and their amazing secondary metabolites having antioxidant, osmo-protectants, and stress-tolerance abilities. Research on cyanobacteria has shown that these secondary metabolites and the substantial photosynthetic rates of cyanobacteria can be exploited for environmental, industrial, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical applications. This book “Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Potential of Cyanobacteria” is a collection of 14 book chapters that have covered almost all aspects related to the opportunities, challenges, and potential applications whileemploying cyanobacteria as feedstock for various industrial and environmental applications with a special focus on pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. Some sections have also covered the enhanced biosynthesis, extraction, storage, and marketing of the cyanobacterial bioactive compounds (phycobilins, carotenoids, fatty acids, amino acids), and applications of cyanobacteria as food/feed of the future. We believe that this book will provide substantial learning opportunities to the readers including graduate students, academicians, phycologists, policymakers, environmental entrepreneurs, and industrialists. This book could be included in SDG 12 publications. The Art of Showing Up: How To Be There For Yourself And Your People

do in the face of suspected Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (MSHT). This textbook includes consideration of the size of the problem, MSHT indicators, important communication skills, the reporting of suspected cases and organisations working in the field. The majority of victims of MSHT come into contact with healthcare professionals (HCPs) at some point in their journey but HCPs report feeling ill equipped to recognise or manage a potential victim, (90% of victims of MSHT come into contact with a HCP but only 10% of HCPs know how to recognise victims and what to do). As such this topic should be represented in undergraduate and post graduate curricula. This textbook deals with the identification and appropriate management of suspected cases. It has been edited by Prof Alison Fiander and Ms Jane Lasonder and written by Healthcare professionals, Medical Students from the School of Medicine, Cardiff University as part of a Student Selected Component, Survivors of MSHT, and organisations working in the Human Trafficking field, including the UN.Glissonean Pedicles Approach in Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery
Par Benedetto Ielpo, Edoardo Rosso, Alessandro Anselmo. 2023
Aim of this book is to present the main minimally invasive approaches to the Glissonean pedicles. This kind of technique…
for hepatectomy has been gaining interest in recent years and may represent the ideal method to achieve anatomical liver resections. Currently the most performed procedure for liver surgery is still the classic intrafascial approach in which, after entering the Glissonean sheath, the portal triad elements are singularly dissected and isolated. However, this is a quite challenging technique to pursue in a minimally invasive setting. Nowadays the laparoscopic and robotic approach for liver resections are increasing worldwide and the intra or extra hepatic Glissonean approach, in which the portal triad elements are dissected and isolated “en bloc” without entering the Glissonean sheath, can facilitate the surgical technique. Furthermore this strategy allows better identification of the ischemic area and could decrease blood loss during dissection, as the liver inflow is kept under control. This book includes a step-by-step description of each pedicle isolation and section, with original laparoscopic and robotic pictures and videos. HPB surgeons who are interested in this technique may find these pages, written in cooperation with some of the most prominent worldwide experts, to be highly informative and valuable.

The Fast: The History, Science, Philosophy, and Promise of Doing Without
Par John Oakes. 2024
With fasting at an all-time high in popularity, here is the first deep exploration into the surprising history and science…
behind the practice—essential to many religions and philosophies.Whether for philosophical, political, or health-related reasons, fasting marks a departure from daily routine. It involves doing less but doing less in a radical way. Based on extensive historical, scientific, and cultural research and reporting, The Fast illuminates the numerous facets of this act of self-deprivation. John Oakes interviews doctors, spiritual leaders, activists, and others who guide him through this practice—and embarks on fasts of his own—to deliver a book that supplies readers curious about fasting with profound new understanding, appreciation, and inspiration. In recent years, fasting has become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons—from health advocates who see fasting as a method to lose weight or to detox, to the faithful who fast in prayer, to seekers pursuing mindfulness, to activists using hunger strikes as an effective means of peaceful protest. Notable fasters include Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad, Gandhi, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Cesar Chavez, and a long list of others who have drawn on its power over the ages and across borders and cultures. The Fast looks at the complex science behind the jaw-dropping biological phenomena that occur inside the human body when we fast. Metabolic switching induced by fasting can prompt repair and renewal down to the molecular level; such fasting can provide benefits for those suffering from obesity and diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. Prolonged fasting can serve both to reinvigorate the immune system and to protect it against damage. Beyond the physical experience, fasting can be a great collective unifier, an instant leveler that connects us purely by virtue of being an act accessible to all, and it has been adopted by religions and political movements all over the world for millennia. Fasting is central to holy seasons and days such as Lent (Christianity), Ramadan (Islam), Yom Kippur (Judaism), Uposatha (Buddhism), and Ekadashi (Hinduism). On an individual level, devout ascetics who master self-deprivation to an extreme are believed to be closer to the divine, ascending to enlightenment or even sainthood. Through the ages, fasting in the name of justice—a hunger strike—has signaled purity of intent and action. It&’s a tactic that demands commitment, serves to highlight the cruelty of those in authority, and appeals to shared values: that we&’re united by a common humanity and we deserve to be heard. Advocates who have waged hunger strikes include Gandhi in India, Bobby Sands in Ireland, and the Taxi Workers Alliance in New York City. Fasting reminds us of the virtues of holding back, of not consuming all that we can. Ultimately, this book shows us that fasting is about much more than food: it is about taking control of your life in new and empowering ways and reconsidering your place in the world. What the Taliban Told Me
Par Ian Fritz. 2023
An &“essential&” (Kevin Maurer, #1 New York Times bestselling author) memoir of a young Air Force linguist coming-of-age in a…
war that is lost. When Ian Fritz joined the Air Force at eighteen, he did so out of necessity. He hadn&’t been accepted into colleges thanks to an indifferent high school career. He&’d too often slept through his classes as he worked long hours at a Chinese restaurant to help pay the bills for his trailer-dwelling family in Lake City, Florida. But the Air Force recognizes his potential and sends him to the elite Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, to learn Dari and Pashto, the main languages of Afghanistan. By 2011, Fritz was an airborne cryptologic linguist and one of only a tiny number of people in the world trained to do this job on low-flying gunships. He monitors communications on the ground and determines in real time which Afghans are Taliban and which are innocent civilians. This eavesdropping is critical to supporting Special Forces units on the ground, but there is no training to counter the emotional complexity that develops as you listen to people&’s most intimate conversations over the course of two tours, Fritz listens to the Taliban for hundreds of hours, all over the country night and day, in moments of peace and in the middle of battle. What he hears teaches him about the people of Afghanistan—Taliban and otherwise—the war, and himself. Fritz&’s fluency is his greatest asset to the military, yet it becomes the greatest liability to his own commitment to the cause. Both proud of his service and in despair that he is instrumental in destroying the voices that he hears, What the Taliban Told Me is a &“fraught, moving&” (Kirkus Reviews) coming-of-age memoir and a reckoning with our twenty years of war in Afghanistan.
