the way social and economic histories become imprinted within language itself. The political and poetic melancholy of our moment is revealed in a long poem on climate change, particularly the disappearance of snow, while the real-life effects of fiscal austerity and poverty are voiced in fragments conveying social neuroses that stem from amplified, unfair competition for basic necessities. Each poem introduces a dominant motif that develops through repetition and incremental variations, sourcing language from newspapers, web sources, and overheard conversations to create an emotive effect, as felt in music. Bringing together research that spans the 15th century to the present day, Mancini searches for symbols that stand in for major social issues to articulate the nuances of living in a precarious time. 2017. environment we not only inhabit, but are. Refusing the lamentation that leaves us as resigned witnesses to devastation, "Rag Cosmology" counters fatalist narratives with the pleasures of ecological entanglement and engagement. Tracing relationships between seemingly irreconcilable things--economy and ecology, weather and lust, bills and inner voices, wages of avoidance and wages of listening--these poems offer the intimate and lush language of thought that yearn for an imaginative reinvention of how we understand what we are part of and what we are losing. Winner of the 2017 A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry (QWF). 2017.
