Par Cees Nooteboom. 1984
In Rituals, Amsterdam of the fifties, sixties and seventies is viewed from the perspective of the capricious Inni Wintrop. An…
unintentional suicide survivor, the unexpected gift of life returned lends him the curiousity, and impartiality, to survey others' lives and rountines. Inni's opposite, the one-eyed downhill skier Arnold Taads measures his life by the clock, while his disowned son Philip follows Japanese rituals which themselves seem to render his existence meaningless. A novel for those who seek to unravel our mysterious, apparently directionless lives...Lovebirds: How to live with the one you love

Par Haim Omer, Dan Dulberger. 2021
This book offers a therapeutic approach to a problem that many families and mental health institutions face: a growing number…
of adult children who struggle to progress to a psychological, social adulthood. The family patterns that revolve around adult children can remain inert for decades, are often resistant to conventional therapy, and can cause chronic suffering to adult children, parents, and extended families. The authors present a guide that addresses parents of adult children as suffering people in their own right and as essential to assisting their child into entering functional adulthood. The authors, one of whom is the originator of the Non-Violent Resistance Therapy approach (NVR), provide an intervention manual that implements NVR principles for helping families of adult children. The book is based on the authors' ten-year journey of helping such families in cases where traditional interventions and therapeutic values seem not to work.Non-Violent Resistance: A New Approach to Violent and Self-Destructive Children
Par Haim Omer. 2021
Non-violent resistance (NVR) is an approach for parents and other caregivers that helps to increase presence and overcome impulsive and…
dangerous behaviors, while reducing conflict and escalation. The practical, evidence-based advice accompanies a detailed list of all the new applications of NVR and an overview of the supporting literature. A step-by-step presentation of the treatment is laid out alongside a useful model on escalation and its prevention. The approach achieves high parent engagement and cooperation, with over twenty controlled studies showing that NVR effectively reduces parental helplessness, parental impulsiveness, parent–child conflicts, and family discord.Smoke Hole: Looking to the Wild in the Time of the Spyglass
Par Martin Shaw. 2021
"With potent, lyrical language and a profound knowledge of storytelling, Shaw encourages and illuminates the mythic in our own lives.…
He is a modern-day bard." – Madeline Miller, author of Circe and The Song of Achilles At a time when we are all confronted by not one, but many crossroads in our modern lives—identity, technology, trust, politics, and a global pandemic—celebrated mythologist and wilderness guide Martin Shaw delivers Smoke Hole: three metaphors to help us understand our world, one that is assailed by the seductive promises of social media and shadowed by a health crisis that has brought loneliness and isolation to an all-time high. Smoke Hole is a passionate call to arms and an invitation to use these stories to face the complexities of contemporary life, from fake news, parenthood, climate crises, addictive technology and more. Shaw urges us to reclaim our imagination and untangle ourselves from modern menace, letting these tales be our guide. More Praise: "I can still remember the first time I heard Martin Shaw tell a story. The tale that emerged was like a living thing, bounding around, throwing itself at us there listening. I had never heard anything like it before." – Paul Kingsnorth, Booker shortlisted author of The Wake "Martin Shaw’s work is so very beautiful. A new animal. His love of images is deep and contagious." – Coleman Barks, author of The Essential Rumi "Through feral tales and poetic exegesis, Martin Shaw makes you re-see the world, as a place of adventure, and of initiation, as perfect home, and as perfectly other. What a gift." – David Keenan, author of Xstabeth "Shaw has so much wisdom and knowledge about the old stories, it emanates from his pores." – John Densmore, The DoorsInterdisciplinary Essays on Cannibalism: Bites Here and There (Warwick Series in the Humanities)
Par Giulia Champion. 2021
Interdisciplinary Essays on Cannibalism: Bites Here and There brings together a range of works exploring the evolution of cannibalism, literally…
and metaphorically, diachronically and across disciplines. This edited collection aims to promote a conversation on the evolution and the different uses of the tropes and figures of cannibalism, in order to understand and deconstruct the fascination with anthropophagy, its continued afterlife and its relation to different disciplines and spaces of discourse. In order to do so, the contributing authors shed a new light not only on the concept, but also propose to explore cannibalism through new optics and theories. Spanning 15 chapters, the collection explores cannibalism across disciplines and fields from Antiquity to contemporary speculative fiction, considering history, anthropology, visual and film studies, philosophy, feminist theories, psychoanalysis and museum practices. This collection of thoughtful and thought-provoking scholarly contributions suggests the importance of cannibalism in understanding human history and social relations.Run From Fear: Dead Wrong Book 3 (Dead Wrong)

Par Diane Pedrotty Bryant. 2021
This key resource for K–12 educators offers a systematic guide to delivering Tier 2 and 3 math interventions within a…
multi-tiered system of support. The volume explains critical math areas in which many students have difficulty--early numeracy, time and money measurement, number combinations, fractions, word-problem solving, algebra, and more. Leading experts describe relevant standards and show how to use data-based individualization to plan, monitor, and intensify instruction in each area. Beginning with bulleted guiding questions, chapters feature a wealth of evidence-based intervention strategies, lesson-planning ideas, and case examples. Reproducible instructional activities and planning forms can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size. This book is an entry into the fierce current debate among psycholinguists, neuroscientists, and evolutionary theorists about the nature and…
origins of human language. A prominent neuroscientist here takes up the Darwinian case, using data seldom considered by psycholinguists and neurolinguists to argue that human language--though more sophisticated than all other forms of animal communication--is not a qualitatively different ability from all forms of animal communication, does not require a quantum evolutionary leap to explain it, and is not unified in a single "language instinct." Using clinical evidence from speech-impaired patients, functional neuroimaging, and evolutionary biology to make his case, Philip Lieberman contends that human language is not a single separate module but a functional neurological system made up of many separate abilities. Language remains as it began, Lieberman argues: a device for coping with the world. But in a blow to human narcissism, he makes the case that this most remarkable human ability is a by-product of our remote reptilian ancestors' abilities to dodge hazards, seize opportunities, and live to see another day.Is It Me or My Meds?: Living with Antidepressants
Par David A. Karp. 2007
By the millennium Americans were spending more than 12 billion dollars yearly on antidepressant medications. Currently, millions of people in…
the U.S. routinely use these pills. Are these miracle drugs, quickly curing depression? Or is their popularity a sign that we now inappropriately redefine normal life problems as diseases? Are they prescribed too often or too seldom? How do they affect self-images? David Karp approaches these questions from the inside, having suffered from clinical depression for most of his adult life. In this book he explores the relationship between pills and personhood by listening to a group of experts who rarely get the chance to speak on the matter--those who are taking the medications. Their voices, extracted from interviews Karp conducted, color the pages with their experiences and reactions--humor, gratitude, frustration, hope, and puzzlement. Here, the patients themselves articulate their impressions of what drugs do to them and for them. They reflect on difficult issues, such as the process of becoming committed to medication, quandaries about personal authenticity, and relations with family and friends. The stories are honest and vivid, from a distraught teenager who shuns antidepressants while regularly using street drugs to a woman who still yearns for a spiritual solution to depression even after telling intimates "I'm on Prozac and it's saving me." The book provides unflinching portraits of people attempting to make sense of a process far more complex and mysterious than doctors or pharmaceutical companies generally admit.Hearing Gesture: How Our Hands Help Us Think
Par Susan Goldin-Meadow. 2005
Many nonverbal behaviors—smiling, blushing, shrugging—reveal our emotions. One nonverbal behavior, gesturing, exposes our thoughts. This book explores how we move…
our hands when we talk, and what it means when we do so. Susan Goldin-Meadow begins with an intriguing discovery: when explaining their answer to a task, children sometimes communicate different ideas with their hand gestures than with their spoken words. Moreover, children whose gestures do not match their speech are particularly likely to benefit from instruction in that task. Not only do gestures provide insight into the unspoken thoughts of children (one of Goldin-Meadow’s central claims), but gestures reveal a child’s readiness to learn, and even suggest which teaching strategies might be most beneficial. In addition, Goldin-Meadow characterizes gesture when it fulfills the entire function of language (as in the case of Sign Languages of the Deaf), when it is reshaped to suit different cultures (American and Chinese), and even when it occurs in children who are blind from birth. Focusing on what we can discover about speakers—adults and children alike—by watching their hands, this book discloses the active role that gesture plays in conversation and, more fundamentally, in thinking. In general, we are unaware of gesture, which occurs as an undercurrent alongside an acknowledged verbal exchange. In this book, Susan Goldin-Meadow makes clear why we must not ignore the background conversation.El poder de los introvertidos: En Un Mundo Incapaz De Callarse
Par Susan Cain. 2012
Music Therapy in Adoption and Trauma: Therapy That Makes a Difference After Placement

Par Yvonne R. Farrell. 2021
Unique in its approach, the new book by Yvonne Farrell provides a framework for understanding how effective the channel system…
is at supporting survival through allowing the body to hide or store trauma, stress and burnout in acts of self-preservation. She looks at how these latencies are created by the different channel systems, why they are created and the cost of these to the individual in terms of chronic imbalance or disease. Patients can become stuck in survival mode and the book explores how to use acupuncture to bypass the human biological reluctance for change and reach the body on a cellular level. The book sheds light on the deeply rooted pathologies of somatization, bad habits and lifestyle choices, and contains a number of case studies designed to illustrate the book's theories and help the practitioner in the diagnosis and treatment of their patient.Acupuncture for Surviving Adversity is about moving patients beyond survival and to a state of balance and wellbeing using acupuncture, giving practitioners the tools that will allow trauma survivors and other patients to reset themselves.Culture and Policy-Making: Pluralism, Performativity, and Semiotic Capital (Culture in Policy Making: The Symbolic Universes of Social Action)
Par Sergio Salvatore, Terri Mannarini, Marco Cremaschi, Carlotta Fioretti. 2021
This book advances the understanding and modelling of sensemaking and cultural processes as being crucial to the scientific study of…
contemporary complex societies. It outlines a dynamic, processual conception of culture and a general view of the role of cultural dynamics in policy-making, drawing three significant methodological implications: pluralism, performativity, and semiotic capital. It focuses on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the analysis of culture and its dynamics that could be applied to the developing of policymaking and, in general, to the understanding of social phenomena. It draws from the experience and data of a large-scale project, RECRIRE, funded by the H2020 program that mapped the symbolic universes across Europe after the economic crisis. It further develops the relationship between culture and policy-making discussed in two previous volumes in this series, and constitutes the ideal third and final element of this trilogy. The book is a useful tool for academics involved in studying cultural dynamics and for policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers attentive to the cultural dimensions of the design, implementation and reception of public policies.Child, Family, School, Community: Socialization and Support (Eighth Edition)

Par Thomas Dumm. 2010
“What does it mean to be lonely?” Thomas Dumm asks. His inquiry, documented in this book, takes us beyond social…
circumstances and into the deeper forces that shape our very existence as modern individuals. The modern individual, Dumm suggests, is fundamentally a lonely self. Through reflections on philosophy, political theory, literature, and tragic drama, he proceeds to illuminate a hidden dimension of the human condition. His book shows how loneliness shapes the contemporary division between public and private, our inability to live with each other honestly and in comity, the estranged forms that our intimate relationships assume, and the weakness of our common bonds. A reading of the relationship between Cordelia and her father in Shakespeare’s King Lear points to the most basic dynamic of modern loneliness—how it is a response to the problem of the “missing mother.” Dumm goes on to explore the most important dimensions of lonely experience—Being, Having, Loving, and Grieving. As the book unfolds, he juxtaposes new interpretations of iconic cultural texts—Moby-Dick, Death of a Salesman, the film Paris, Texas, Emerson’s “Experience,” to name a few—with his own experiences of loneliness, as a son, as a father, and as a grieving husband and widower. Written with deceptive simplicity, Loneliness as a Way of Life is something rare—an intellectual study that is passionately personal. It challenges us, not to overcome our loneliness, but to learn how to re-inhabit it in a better way. To fail to do so, this book reveals, will only intensify the power that it holds over us.Do I Need to See a Therapist?: How the fear of emotion keeps us struggling, and what to do about it
Par Donna Maria Bottomley. 2021
While society as a whole is becoming increasingly conscious of mental health, and the social consequences of the global Covid-19…
pandemic has made the issue ever more salient, the idea of asking for professional help has largely remained taboo. The fear of being thought mad, weak or helpless, and the prospect of having to revisit personal trauma, have stopped many people from seeking out a therapist. In this empathetic and practical guide, drawing on some of the latest studies in the field, psychotherapist Donna Maria Bottomley examines these anxieties and argues that therapy should be just as acceptable as seeing a GP or booking your car into the garage, and needn’t be our last resort. Do I Need to See a Therapist? provides insight into how we can acknowledge and overcome the dual-fear of not only what we think it means about us if we see a therapist, but the fear of our own emotions themselves. The book provides a framework through which we can plot what is upsetting us, and lays out what to expect from therapy and how to make it work for us. The many pathways towards finding help, whether in a traditional practice setting or via alternate routes made possible by modern technology are also discussed, alongside a tool to help you choose between the many therapies on offer.
