A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance
Par Camille Morvan, Alexander O’Connor. 2017
Leon Festinger’s 1957 A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance is a key text in the history of psychology – one that…
made its author one of the most influential social psychologists of his time. It is also a prime example of how creative thinking and problem solving skills can come together to produce work that changes the way people look at questions for good. Strong creative thinkers are able to look at things from a new perspective, often to the point of challenging the very frames in which those around them see things. Festinger was such a creative thinker, leading what came to be known as the “cognitive revolution” in social psychology. When Festinger was carrying out his research, the dominant school of thought – behaviorism – focused on outward behaviors and their effects. Festinger, however, turned his attention elsewhere, looking at “cognition:” the mental processes behind behaviors. In the case of “cognitive dissonance”, for example, he hypothesized that apparently incomprehensible or illogical behaviors might be caused by a cognitive drive away from dissonance, or internal contradiction. This perspective, however, raised a problem: how to examine and test out cognitive processes. Festinger’s book records the results of the psychological experiments he designed to solve that problem. The results helped prove the existence for what is now a fundamental theory in social psychology.Purple Prose

Par Lincoln Seligman, Dennis Friedman. 2013
A diverse and fascinating survey of the author's 50 years' work in psychoanalysisThis collection can be seen as the culmination…
of Dennis Friedman's 50 years' experience and success in the fields of psychoanalysis and writing. The cases portrayed here are some of the most fascinating and memorable he has faced and are presented as classic examples of the Freudian method and the success that can be achieved through it. What makes it so tantalizing and readable is the fact that several of these cases involve famous clients of Friedman's whose identity must remain secret. It remains, however, a serious and enriching study and an important work in the field.Mad Mobs and Englishmen?: Myths And Realities Of The 2011 Riots
Par Cliff Stott, Steve Reicher. 2011
In August 2011, London and many other English towns and cities erupted into some of the worst rioting for decades.…
David Cameron blamed a broken society with a sick morality; Tony Blair a defiant underclass. Yet with no evidence to support their claims, their remarks were typical of the storm of uninformed comments that followed the riots, based largely on longstanding misconceptions of why people riot. With their extensive expertise in crowd behaviour and psychology, and years of research experience studying crowds, riots and hooliganism worldwide, psychologists Steve Reicher and Cliff Stott challenge the myths of the 2011 riots perpetuated in the media and elsewhere; consider the reality on the ground and how to avoid a repeat scenario. The Nature and Function of Intuitive Thought and Decision Making
Par Lauri Järvilehto. 2015
This book focuses on the very nature and function of intuitive thought. It presents an up-to-date scientific model on how…
the non-conscious and intuitive thought processes work in human beings. The model is based on mainstream theorizing on intuition, as well as qualitative meta-analysis of the empirical data available in the research literature. It combines recent work in the fields of philosophy of mind, cognitive psychology and positive psychology. While systematic research in intuition is relatively new, there is an abundance of positions advocating more or less imaginative ideas of what intuition is about, ranging from quantum mechanical phenomena to new age ideologies. Research in the past few decades, in particular by proponents of the dual processing theory of thought such as Daniel Kahneman and Jonathan Evans, offers powerful tools to address and evaluate the question of intuition without the need to resort to spiritual entities. Within the framework of the dual processing theory, backed up by findings in positive psychology, intuition turns out to be the capacity to carry out complex cognitive operations within a specific domain of operations familiar to the agent. The Mammoth Book of Journalism

Par Herbert H. Stein. 2002
a) What recent smash hit movie secretly depicted fear of the female breast? b) Name some recent films that were…
preoccupied with castration anxiety? c) Would you be surprised to know that reliving our childhood Oedipal fixations helps us to better understand adult-themed films? You'll find the answers to these and many similarly intriguing questions in DOUBLE FEATURE: DISCOVERING OUR HIDDEN FANTASIES IN FILM by Herbert Stein, M.D. Dr. Stein, a highly-respected Freudian psychiatrist and passionate moviegoer, literally puts our favorite films on the couch and shares his confidential findings with us. In a book that could become a cult classic, he lays bare the truth about unconscious and subconscious themes running through popular culture with fresh, jolting, and often moving insights into some of the most popular films ever made, including JURASSIC PARK, FIELD OF DREAMS, FORRST GUMP, THE SIXTH SENSE, and THE USUAL SUSPECTS. However perceptive we may think ourselves, this book reveals how we unconsciously respond to deeply-embedded archetypal themes in movies and enables us to re-experience films we love in a completely fresh way. Indeed, DOUBLE FEATURE makes our favorite films even more resonant and enables us to articulate even more deeply what it is we love about them.Young People’s Human Rights and the Politics of Voting Age
Par Sonja C. Grover. 2010
Young People's Human Rights and The Politics of Voting Age explores the broader societal implications of voting age eligibility requirements…
and the legislative bar against youth voting in North America and in Commonwealth countries (where 'youth' is defined as persons 16 and over but under age 18). The issue is raised as to whether the denial of the youth vote undermines democratic principles and values and ultimately the human dignity of youth. This is the first book to address the topic of the youth vote in-depth as a fundamental human rights concern relating to the entitlement in a democracy to societal participation and inclusion in influencing policy and law which profoundly affects one's life. Also examined are international perspectives on the issue of voting age eligibility. The book would be extremely valuable for instructional purposes as one of the primary texts in undergraduate or graduate courses on children's human rights, political psychology, political science , sociology of law or society and as a supplementary text for courses on human rights or constitutional law and would be of interest also to members of the general public concerned with children's human rights issues. What Makes Us Moral? On the capacities and conditions for being moral
Par Bert Musschenga, Anton Van Harskamp. 2012
This book addresses the question of what it means to be moral and which capacities one needs to be moral.…
It questions whether empathy is a cognitive or an affective capacity, or perhaps both. As most moral beings behave immorally from time to time, the authors ask which factors cause or motivate people to translate their moral beliefs into action? Specially addressed is the question of what is the role of internal factors such as willpower, commitment, character, and what is the role of external, situational and structural factors? The questions are considered from various (disciplinary) perspectives.La connaissance et la gestion des émotions du patient, du soignant familial et du personnel médical
