Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter
Par Robert Rummel-Hudson. 2009
When Schuyler Rummel-Hudson was eighteen months old, a question about her lack of speech by her pediatrician set in motion…
a journey that continues today. When she was diagnosed with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria (an extremely rare neurological disorder), her parents were given a name for the monster that had been stalking them from doctor to doctor, and from despair to hope, and back again. Once they knew why Schuyler couldn't speak, they needed to determine how to help her learn. They took on educators and society to give their beautiful daughter a voice, and in the process learned a thing or two about fearlessness, tenacity, and joy. More than a memoir of a parent dealing with his child's disability, Schuyler's Monster is a tale of a little girl who silently teaches a man filled with self-doubt how to be the father she needs. Robert Rummel-Hudson has been writing online since 1995. His work has been recognized by the Diarist Awards at diarist. net, including citations for Best Writing, Best Overall Journal, Best Account of a Public or News Event, Best Dramatic Entry, and the Legacy Hall of Fame Award. He has served three times as a featured panelist at JournalCon, an annual conference for online writers. His online writing has been featured in articles in the Austin Chronicle , the Irish Times and the New Haven Register . Robert and his family currently live in Plano, Texas. When Schuyler was 18 months old, a question about her lack of speech by her pediatrician set in motion a journey that continues today. When she was diagnosed with Bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria (an extremely rare neurological disorder caused by a malformation of the brain), her parents were given a name for the monster that had been stalking them throughout the search for the correct answer to Schuyler''s mystery. Once they knew why she couldnâ t speak, they needed to determine how to help her learn. Schuylerâ s Monster is more than the memoir of a parent dealing with a childâ s disability. It is the honest, funny, and heart-wrenching story of the relationship between a unique and ethereal little girl and her father who struggles with whether or not he is the right dad for the job. It is the story of a family seeking answers to a childâ s dilemma, but it is also a chronicle of their unique relationships, formed without traditional language against the expectations of a doubting world. It is the story of a little girl who silently teaches a man filled with self-doubt how to be the father she needs. "A gripping explication, shot through with equal parts horror and hope, of how parenthood can turn ordinary people into passionate advocates. "â " Neal Pollack, author of Alternadad "Robert Rummel-Hudson is brave enough to reveal the damage the discovery of his child''s condition did to his marriage and to his own sense of self. He manages to repair some of the damage through close involvement with Schuyler and vigorous campaigning on her behalf. His memoir is honest, often painful and deeply personal. "â " Charlotte Moore, author of George & Sam "The book is engaging and honestâ "I''m sure it will help many parents who are struggling to find the most loving way to help their children who have â issues. â "â " Dana Buchman, author of A Special Education "The monster in this heartfelt memoir is polymicrogyria, an extremely rare brain malformation that, in the case of Rummel-Hudson''s daughter Schuyler, has completely impaired her ability to speak. During her first three years, as her parents seek to find out what hidden ''monster'' is causing her wordlessness, they endure ''two years of questions and tests and at least one unsatisfactory diagnosis. '' But while Rummel-Hudson initially rages at God for giving Schuyler ''a life that would never ever be what we''d imagined it to be,'' his depiction of her next four years becomes a study not only in Schuyler''s vivacious and resilient personality, but also in the redeeming power ofThe Psychology of Harry Potter: An Unauthorized Examination Of The Boy Who Lived

Par Christopher J. Ferguson, Patrick M. Markey. 2017
In family rooms across America, millions of children and teenagers are playing video games, such as Call of Duty, Halo,…
and Grand Theft Auto, roaming violent virtual worldswith virtual guns in their hands. In what sometimes seems like an increasingly violent world, it's only natural to worry about the effects of all this pixelated gore. But is that concern misplaced? Authors and psychologists Patrick M. Markey and Christopher J. Ferguson say it is.The media and politicians have been sounding the alarm for years, and with every fresh tragedy involving a young perpetrator comes another flurry of articles about the dangers of violent media. The problem is this: Their fear isn't supported by the evidence. In fact, unlike the video gametrained murder machines depicted in the press, school shooters are actually less likely to be interested in violent games than their peers. In reality, most well-adjusted children and teenagers play violent video games, all without ever exhibiting violent behavior in real life. What's more, spikes in sales of violent games actually correspond to decreased rates of violent crime. If that surprises you, you're not alonethe national dialogue on games and violence has been hopelessly biased. But that's beginning to change. Scholars are finding that not only are violent games not one of society's great evils, they may even be a force for good.In Moral Combat, Markey and Ferguson explore how video gameseven the bloodiestcan have a positive impact on everything from social skills to stress, and may even make us more morally sensitive. Tracing the rise of violent games from arcades to online deathmatches, they have spent years on the front lines of the video game debate and now offer a comprehensive overview of the scientific research on gaming. With humor, complete honesty, and extensive research, they separate the myth from the medium.Moral Combat is an irreverent and informative guide to the worriesand wondersof our violent virtual world. The Forgetting Machine: Memory, Perception, and the Jennifer Aniston Neuron
Par Rodrigo Quian Quiroga. 2017
If we lose our memories, are we still ourselves? Is identity merely a collection of electrical impulses? What separates us…
from animals, or from computers? From Plato to Westworld, these questions have fascinated and befuddled philosophers, artists, and scientists for centuries. In The Forgetting Machine, neuroscientist Rodrigo Quian Quiroga explains how the mechanics of memory illuminates these discussions, with implications for everything from understanding Alzheimer's disease to the technology of Artificial Intelligence. You'll also learn about the research behind what Quian Quiroga coined "Jennifer Aniston Neurons," cells in the human brain that are responsible for representing specific concepts, such as recognizing a certain celebrity's face. The discovery of these neurons opens new windows into the workings of human memory. In this accessible, fascinating look at the science of remembering, discover how we turn perceptions into memories, how language shapes our experiences, and the crucial role forgetting plays in human recollection. You'll see how electricity, chemistry, and abstraction combine to form something more than the human brain, the human mind. And you'll gain surprising insight into what our brains can tell us about who we are.The Forgetting Machine takes us on a journey through science and science fiction, philosophy and identity, using what we know about how we remember (and forget) to explore the very roots of what makes us human."Belonging has been a formative struggle for me. Like most people with marginalized identities, my experience has taught me that…
it's hard to be yourself and feel like you belong in a culture that is hostile to your existence. That's why my body of work as a scientist, author, professor, speaker, and advocate for body liberation always comes back to the impact of belonging or not belonging. Radical Belonging is my manifesto, helping us heal from the individual and collective trauma of injustice and support our transition from a culture of othering to one of belonging." —Lindo Bacon Too many of us feel alienated from our bodies. This isn't your personal failing; it means that our culture is failing you. We are in the midst of a cultural moment. #MeToo. #BlackLivesMatter. #TransIsBeautiful. #AbleismExists. #EffYourBeautyStandards. Those of us who don't fit into the "mythical norm" (white, male, cisgender, able-bodied, slender, Christian, etc.)—which is to say, most of us—are demanding our basic right: To know that who we are matters. To belong. Being "othered" and the body shame it spurs is not "just" a feeling. Being erased and devalued impacts our ability to regulate our emotions, our relationships with others, our health and longevity, our finances, our ability to realize dreams, and whether we will be accepted, loved, or even safe. Radical Belonging is not a simple self-love treatise. Focusing only on self-love ignores the important fact that we have negative experiences because our culture has targeted certain bodies and people for abuse or alienation. For marginalized people, a focus on self-love can be a spoonful of sugar that makes the oppression go down. This groundbreaking book goes further, helping us to manage the challenges that stem from oppression and moving beyond self-love and into belonging. With Lindo Bacon's signature blend of science and storytelling, Radical Belonging addresses the political, sociological, psychological and biological underpinnings of your experiences, helping you understand that the alienation and pain you are experiencing is not personal, but human. The problem is in injustice, not you as an individual. So many of us feel wounded by a culture that has alienated us from our bodies and divided us from each other. Radical Belonging provides strategies to reckon with the trauma of injustice; reclaim yourself, body and soul; and rewire your nervous system to better cope within an unjust world. It also provides strategies to help us all provide refuge for one another and create a culture of equity and empathy, one that respects, includes, and benefits from all its diverse peoples. Whether you are transgender, queer, Black, Indigenous or a Person of Color, disabled, old, or fat—or your more closely resemble the "mythical norm"—Radical Belonging is your guidebook for creating a world where all bodies are valued and all of us belong—and for coping with this one, until we make that new world a reality.Human-Robot Body Experience (Springer Series on Touch and Haptic Systems)
Par Philipp Beckerle. 2021
This monograph presents innovative research regarding the body experience of human individuals who are using assistive robotic devices such as…
wearable robots or teleoperation systems. The focus is set on human-in-the-loop experiments that help to empirically evaluate how users experience devices. Moreover, these experiments allow for further examination of the underlying mechanisms of body experience through extending existing psychological paradigms, e.g., by disentangling tactile feedback from contacts. Besides reporting and discussing psychological examinations, the influence of various aspects of engineering design is investigated, e.g., different implementations of haptic interfaces or robot control. As haptics are of paramount importance in this tight type of human-robot interaction, it is explored with respect to modality as well as temporal and spatial effects. The first part of the book motivates the research topic and gives an in-depth analysis of the experimental requirements. The second and third part present experimental designs and studies of human-robot body experience regarding the upper and lower limbs as well as cognitive models to predict them. The fourth part discusses a multitude of design considerations and provides directions to guide future research on bidirectional human-machine interfaces and non-functional haptic feedback.Augmenting Employee Trust and Cooperation
Par Pervaiz K. Ahmed, Andrei O. Kwok, Motoki Watabe. 2021
This book is an essential guide for academics and practitioners to understand employees’ differences in personality and how best to…
motivate them accordingly. The authors provide an in-depth perspective of how organizations can better prepare for the new realities of the workplace. Amidst the war for talent and a continually evolving workplace that has reduced employee psychological attachment, employees prefer to be treated as individuals with the expectation of individual recognition and reward. The authors draw from their personal, corporate, and research experience by combining interdisciplinary perspectives (organizational behavior, human resource management, psychology, sociology, economics) to offer holistic insights into individual expectancy and motivation integral to a successful employer-employee interaction.Interestingly, research remains lacking on the effects of excessive extrinsic rewards on trust and cooperation. Hence, this book fulfills significant gaps in vital areas that existing studies have not yet sufficiently addressed. These areas are psychological contract, excessive extrinsic rewards, and individual differences in personality (locus of control and general trust). The authors use scenario-based laboratory experiments to examine the moderating effects of locus of control and general trust that underscore employee expectations. The differential effects contribute to insight on behavioral outcomes in the workplace that result from employee perception, personality, and intention towards the provision of rewards.Consequently, the book dispels the discrepancies between economists and psychologists about the efficacy of rewards. Findings demonstrate that although excessive extrinsic rewards augment all employees’ trust and cooperation, it is vital for employers to reward selectively those who are most deserving. Findings offer a deeper understanding of the saliency, efficacy, and judiciousness of excessive extrinsic rewards. Employers will benefit by understanding how best to tailor rewards to motivate each employee.Lacan Noir: Lacan and Afro-pessimism (The Palgrave Lacan Series)
Par David S Marriott. 2021
This book explores how Jacques Lacan has influenced Black Studies from the 1950s to the present day, and in turn…
how a Black Studies framework challenges the topographies of Lacanianism in its understanding of race. David Marriott examines how a contemporary Black Studies perspective might respond to the psychoanalysis of race by taking advantage of the recent revitalization of Lacanianism in its speculative, metaphysical form. While the philosophical side of the debate makes a plea for a new universalism, this book proposes a Lacanian reassessment of the notion of race, a notion distinct from culture, language, religion, and identity. It argues that it is possible to re-establish the theoretical relation between capitalism, anti-blackness, and colonialism, by reassessing the links between Lacanian psychoanalysis and three main domains of black inquiry: mastery, knowledge, and embodiment. The book offers a strikingly original rereading of the place of Lacan in both Fanon Studies and Afro-pessimism. It will appeal to students and scholars of Black Studies, Cultural Studies, Critical Theory and Philosophy. The Psychology of Zelda: Linking Our World to the Legend of Zelda Series
Par Anthony M. Bean. 2019
It's dangerous to go alone! Take this (book). For more than 30 years, The Legend of Zelda—which immerses players in…
a courageous struggle against the shadowy forces of evil in a world of high fantasy—has spanned more than 30 different installments, selling over 75 million copies. Today, it is one of the most beloved video game franchises around the globe. Video game sales as a whole have continued to grow, now raking in twice as much money per year as the entire film industry, and countless psychologists have turned their attention to the effects gaming has on us: our confidence, our identity, and our personal growth. The Psychology of Zelda applies the latest psychological findings, plus insights from classic psychology theory, to Link, Zelda, Hyrule, and the players who choose to wield the Master Sword. In The Psychology of Zelda, psychologists who love the games ask: • How do Link's battles in Ocarina of Time against Dark Link, his monstrous doppelganger, mirror the difficulty of confronting our personal demons and the tendency to be our own worst enemies? • What lessons about pursuing life's greater meaning can we take away from Link's quests through Hyrule and beyond the stereotypical video game scenario of rescuing a Princess (Zelda)? • What do we experience as players when we hear that familiar royal lullaby on the ocarina, Saria's spirited melody in the Lost Woods, or the iconic main theme on the title screen? • How do the obstacles throughout Majora's Mask represent the Five Stages of Grief? • What can Link's journey to overcome the loss of the fairy Navi teach us about understanding our own grief and depression? • Why are we psychologically drawn to the game each and every time a new version becomes available even when they all have a similar storyline? Think you've completed the quest? The Psychology of Zelda gives you new, thrilling dungeons to explore and even more puzzles to solve.Brain science is at the dawn of a new era—and the technologies emerging as a result could forever alter what…

Par Matt Johnson, Prince Ghuman. 2020
Ever notice that all watch ads show 10:10 as the time? Or that all fast-food restaurants use red or yellow…
in their logos? Or that certain stores are always having a sale? You may not be aware of these details, yet they've been influencing you all along. Every time you purchase, swipe, or click, marketers are able to more accurately predict your behavior. These days, brands know more about you than you know about yourself. Blindsight is here to change that. With eye-opening science, engaging stories, and fascinating real-world examples, neuroscientist Matt Johnson and marketer Prince Ghuman dive deep into the surprising relationship between brains and brands. In Blindsight, they showcase how marketing taps every aspect of our mental lives, covering the neuroscience of pain and pleasure, emotion and logic, fear and safety, attention and addiction, and much more. We like to think of ourselves as independent actors in control of our decisions, but the truth is far more complicated. Blindsight will give you the ability to see the unseeable when it comes to marketing, so that you can consume on your own terms. On the surface, you will learn how the brain works and how brands design for it. But peel back a layer, and you'll find a sharper image of your psychology, reflected in your consumer behavior. This book will change the way you view not just branding, but yourself, too.Change Your Brain, Change Your Grades: The Secrets of Successful Students: Science-Based Strategies to Boost Memory, Strengthen Focus, and Study Faster
