Par Ian G. Kennedy, Gloria Latham, Hélia Jacinto. 2016
This monograph presents the current views, challenges and future needs of educators from a global online exchange where educators and…
researchers discuss the 21st century skills needed by students and teachers. The three editors, who participated in the global online research discussion group, also assumed the role of authors to summarise, analyse and celebrate the myriad of ideas generated in a topic thread that had well over a thousand responses from 26 countries. Through Comparative Analysis they then compared the posters' ideas to some current big thinkers in education. This text promotes teachers' voices from diverse disciplines and sectors who are united in their desire for purposeful and radical change in how teaching is carried out and what is taught. The text advocates shifting power away from government control and standardisation towards empowering teachers to guide and further develop the unique talents of diverse individuals.Access: How Do Good Health Technologies Get to Poor People in Poor Countries?
Par Michael Reich, Laura J. Frost. 2014
Many people in developing countries lack access to health technologies, even basic ones. Why do these problems in access persist?…
What can be done to improve access to good health technologies, especially for poor people in poor countries? This book answers those questions by developing a comprehensive analytical framework for access and examining six case studies to explain why some health technologies achieved more access than others. The technologies include praziquantel (for the treatment of schistosomiasis), hepatitis B vaccine, malaria rapid diagnostic tests, vaccine vial monitors for temperature exposure, the Norplant implant contraceptive, and female condoms. Based on research studies commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to better understand the development, adoption, and uptake of health technologies in poor countries, the book concludes with specific lessons on strategies to improve access. These lessons will be of keen interest to students of health and development, public health professionals, and health technology developers--all who seek to improve access to health technologies in poor countries. This edition now includes a new preface by the authors.Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura
Par Craig R. Carey. 2012
Named for the Spanish padres who established a network of missions along California's southern and central coasts, the Los Padres…
National Forest is the second-largest National Forest in the state, encompassing approximately 1,950,000 acres - nearly half of which is federally-designated wilderness.Hiking and Backpacking Santa Barbara and Ventura fills a huge gap in coverage of this great hiking and backpacking destination, leading the reader through the varied terrain of the forest's southern districts, from the fern-clad grottoes of the Santa Barbara frontcountry to the sweeping vistas and granite-clad ridges of the Chumash Wilderness. No other guide covers the region in such detail, and not since Dennis Gagnon's near-legendary guides in the 70s and 80s has the Santa Barbara (and Ventura) backcountry been given the guidebook treatment ... but this book goes even further. Every official trail (and many use trails) in the Santa Barbara, Ojai, and Mt. Piños districts are covered here, including those in the southern San Rafael Wilderness, Dick Smith Wilderness, Matilija Wilderness, Sespe Wilderness, Chumash Wilderness, the Santa Ynez Recreation Area, Rose Valley, the Santa Barbara and Montecito frontcountry, the Ojai frontcountry, and the Santa Paula/Fillmore frontcountry. The Diet Survivor's Handbook

being a British master-spy sent in 1918 to overthrow the Bolsheviks in Central Asia As a result he enjoyed many years after his death an almost legendary reputation there that of half-hero half-villain In this remarkable book which was first published in he tells of the perilous game of cat-and-mouse lasting sixteen months which he played with the Bolshevik secret police the dreaded Cheka At one point using a false identity he actually joined the ranks of the latter who unsuspectingly sent him to Bokhara to arrest himself Told with almost breathtaking understatement Bailey s narrative set in a region once more back in the headlines reads like vintage Buchan one of the best books about secret intelligence work ever written Peter HopkirkThe Hero of Delhi: A Life of John Nicholson, Saviour of India, and a History of His Wars
Par Hesketh Pearson. 2018
An Irishman, like so many other great British generals, John Nicholson received a cadetship in the Bengal Infantry at the…
age of sixteen. Apart from one short visit to England, the rest of his life was spent in India. The Afghan and Sikh wars of the eighteen-forties brought out the titanic powers of a character that “flowered in action,” and before he was thirty, “Nikal Seyn” was a legend throughout India, a god to the Sikhs and to certain fakirs who called themselves Nikal-seynites, and a thorn in the side of incompetent and idle officials of the British Government. In an unquiet country where quick movement was the secret of military success against an elusive enemy, Nicholson’s energy, even more than his absolute personal courage, was the factor that made him the most powerful instrument of British policy in India. Passionately sincere, arrogantly self-confident, insubordinate without remorse when he saw cause, and always in the right, Nicholson provoked no ordinary emotions. He was loved, admired, feared, envied, and hated in the most violent degree. The climax of his career was the Indian Mutiny. Very seldom in history have the man and the task matched each other so notably. “Mutiny is like small-pox,” he said. “It spreads quickly and must be crushed at once.” Not all his superiors thought the same, but when he had freed himself from the trammels of authority he saved the Punjab, and so India, by sheer exertion. It is a breathless story of march, surprise, and counter-march, thrusting quickly into the hills and as quickly back to Peshawar, the danger-spot. When that situation was under control he marched to Delhi, where his arrival transformed the rôle of the British troops from besieged to assaulters. The assault succeeded but cost Nicholson his life. He was thirty-four years old, a general, and “the idol of all soldiers.”Extra Lean
