Aging with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa: Health and Psychosocial Perspectives
Par Catherine MacPhail, Janet Seeley, Mark Brennan-Ing, Kristen E. Porter, Jennifer E. Kaufman. 2022
With the development of effective antiretroviral therapies (ART) in the mid-1990s, HIV became a treatable although serious condition, and people…
who are adherent to HIV medications can attain normal or near-normal life expectancies. Because of the success of ART, people 50 and older now make up a majority of people with HIV in high-income countries and other places where ART is accessible. The aging of the HIV epidemic is a global trend that is also being observed in low- and middle-income countries, including countries in sub-Saharan Africa, where the greatest number of older people with HIV reside (3.7 million). While globally over half of older adults with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa, we have little information about the circumstances, needs, and resiliencies of this population, which limits our ability to craft effective policy and programmatic responses to aging with HIV in this region. At present, our understanding of HIV and aging is dominated by information from the U.S. and Western Europe, where the epidemiology of HIV and the infrastructure to provide social care are markedly different than in sub-Saharan Africa. Aging with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa addresses this gap in our knowledge by providing current research and perspectives on a range of health and psychosocial topics concerning these older adults from across this region. This volume provides a unique and timely overview of growing older with HIV in a sub-Saharan African context, covering such topics as epidemiology, health and functioning, and social support, as well as policy and program implications to support those growing older with HIV. There are very few published volumes that address HIV and aging, and this is the first book to consider HIV and aging in sub-Saharan Africa. Most publications in this area focus on HIV and aging in Uganda and South Africa. This volume broadens the scope with contributions from authors working in West Africa, Botswana, and Kenya. The range of topics covered here will be useful to professionals in a range of disciplines including psychology, epidemiology, gerontology, sociology, health care, public health, and social work.Mobilität und Teilhabe – Begleitdienste im öffentlichen Personennahverkehr: Erfahrungen aus einem sozio-technischen Forschungsprojekt

Par Beth Powning. 2005
From the bestselling, critically acclaimed author of The Hatbox Letters and Shadow Child comes the story of a year of…
transformation. In the middle years of her life, Beth Powning stands on a threshold: an &“edge season.&” Late one August, when Beth and her partner, Peter, observe the deserted sauna bath on their farm near Sussex, New Brunswick, she remembers the faith and energy that went into building it. As they begin to repair the sauna, the project becomes a metaphor for how dreams, relationships and commitments need to be continuously renewed. While their only child, Jake, prepares to leave for university, Beth and Peter contemplate changes of their own. As fall and winter gradually shut down the vibrant life of the gardens, fields and forests near her home, Beth witnesses the beauty and regenerative force of the natural world, weaving acutely observed descriptions of the countryside with the story of her own intimate transformation. Edge Seasons is an intensely absorbing journey that illuminates how change can shatter even as it strengthens.Cultures of Ageing: Self, Citizen and the Body

nature of post-retirement life experienced by people at the end of the twentieth century. It examines age and ageing in terms of the key preoccupations of contemporary sociology - citizenship, the body and the self. The book provides a platform for a new social gerontology that sees ageing as central to our understanding of social change. It examines social, cultural and political changes in Europe and North America to address the need for a text that moves the study of ageing from social policy towards the mainstream of social science.Community-Based Integrated Care for Older Adults: A Practical Guide
Par Matthew K. McNabney. 2022
Community-based integrated care (CBIC) is designed to keep older adults where they want to be – at home and out…
of hospitals and nursing homes. The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) is an example of successful CBIC, established in 1985 as an innovative solution to pervasive issue: how to provide integrated care to a high-risk population of older adults that promotes community living (not a nursing home) in a cost-effective manner. This unique guide provides readers with a concise yet informative base of understanding of PACE as well as a “deep dive” into the components and job roles that will serve as a reference for existing PACE providers and will inform those who are considering the possibility of developing a new PACE program. Chapters are organized into five thematic sections. Part one presents both domestic and international perspectives on CBIC, with part two delving deeper into the US PACE model, including its history, policy evolution and effectiveness. Specifics regarding the organization and management of PACE and the essential roles and positions comprise parts three and four, respectively, from leadership and the involvement of the state to the roles of the social worker, nurse, nutritionist, rehabilitation specialist, and more. Care planning, coordination and end of life care round out part five. In addition to geriatricians and other clinical practitioners involved with the care of older patients, Community-Based Integrated Care for Older Adults is also a resource for scholars, policy makers and the general public who are interested in innovations in long-term care that provide older adults with alternatives to nursing homes.Psychiatry in the Nursing Home: Assessment, Evaluation, And Intervention

morbidity and early death. Arguing that social connection is not the only answer, it explores pathways for transforming loneliness to healthy solitude. The first part of the book draws on the humanities and arts, including psychology, philosophy and literature to analyse the common, and potentially serious, problem of loneliness. It makes the case that the condition is less a deficiency than a state of self-disconnection that modernity feeds through social forces. The second part of the book looks at how person-centred health care can help educate persons to transform loneliness into healthy solitude. It provides an analysis of self-connection and spiritual connection, discussing how these forms of contact can mitigate risks associated with both lack of social connection, and social connection itself, such as self-disconnection and rejection by others. It goes on to demonstrate that connection to the self and spirit can make aloneness a resource and facilitate access to benefits of connecting with others. This thought-provoking book provides students, scholars and practitioners from a range of health and social care backgrounds with a new way of thinking about, researching and practising with lonely people.Altern gestalten - Medizin, Technik, Umwelt: Medizin - Technik - Umwelt (Schriften der Mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Klasse #21)

Par Jessica Halliday Hardie. 2022
Given the range of possibilities open to women today, what futures do adolescent girls dream of and pursue? And how…
do social class and race play into their trajectories? In asking young women about their aspirations in three areas—school, work, and family—Best Laid Plans demonstrates how future plans are framed by notions of gendered responsibilities and abilities. Through her examination of the lives of poor, working-class, and middle-class Black and White young women as they navigate the transition to adulthood, sociologist Jessica Halliday Hardie defines anew what it means for young women to come of age. In particular, Hardie shows how social capital, either possessed or lacked, is not simply a resource for planning for the future but a structure whose form and function varies by social class and race. As these inequalities persist into adulthood, high aspirations, social capital, and careful planning bolster some young women while hindering others. Drawing on qualitative data from a five-year period, Best Laid Plans makes the case for why we need to move beyond the individual appeal to "dream bigger" and "plan better" and toward systematic changes that will put young people’s aspirations within reach.Self-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself

carefully offers a series of opinions that attempt to illuminate the fact that the aging society goes beyond aging and includes a series of changes in terms of family, social ties, relationships, and the way human beings perceive society. The book contributes substantially to the discussion of this new type of aging, the new types of families, and the new types of relationships, as well as in the application of cutting-edge analytical strategies to understand the trends and patterns of these new modes of social structures. The book includes detailed perspectives on how decisions need to be made, mindsets need to be changed, and precautions need to be taken to positively deal with these new realities. The evidence presented in this book suggests that if this does not happen, the danger of thanato-politics appears, which, denying reality, will lead humanity into difficult labyrinths, perhaps without any "Ariadne's thread" that will allow a glimpse of the way out. The translation from Spanish to English was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.Changing with Aging: Little Stories, Big Lessons
