Over the Edge: Stories and Essays
Par Harlan Ellison. 1970
Over the Edge, a collection of twelve short stories and essays from Harlan Ellison, is a must-read for any fan…
of the wild abandon and laser focus of one of the century's most brilliant authors. Complex, alluring, audacious, sublime--it is not hyperbole when applied to the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author whom the Washington Post calls "one of the great living American short story writers."Stories for Men: An Anthology
Par Bruce L.R. Smith. 2011
Can the reading public imagine a less likely but more needed book than Stories for Men - a seventy-five-year- old…
anthology edited by Charles Grayson - written in an age when such a title would scarcely raise an eyebrow! Imagine a book about men in which the featured theme is not rapists, child abusers, or men who never weep, feel little sorrow, or prefer dog fighting to baseball. To say the least, this is a counter-cultural collective portrait necessary in today's politically correct world. The original editor, Charles Grayson, hit the nail on the head in his ""explicit"" opening remarks. ""The only claim we make for this book is that it doesn't pretend to offer the best, or the finest, in the world's foremost short stories by contemporary masters. Simply it is just a bundle of yarns by present day American writers, each dealing with a different phase of the actions and activities of men, designed for good reading."" The text fulfills its mission. The work features little known short stories by such major writers as Erskine Caldwell on racial relations, James M. Cain on murder, James T. Farrell on street life, Dashiell Hammett on men and divorce, Ring W. Lardner on baseball, Damon Runyon on football, William Saroyan on horseracing, Thomas Wolfe on travel, William Faulkner on foreigners, among many others. For readers interested in a slice of America, this will be a book of inestimable value as well as personal pleasure. Stories for Men will prove ideal.Compare worldwide religious regulations involving gay sex and masculinity! Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods: An Exploration into the Religious Significance…
of Male Homosexuality in World Perspective is an eye-opening look at the traditions of particular religions and their edicts concerning gay sex. This book examines the origins of holy directives involving homosexualitywhether forbidden, tolerated, or mandatoryand establishes a link between theology, sex roles, and the sensitive issue of masculinity. This text draws a parallel between homosexuality and the idea of religion, suggesting that gay rights can be understood as a freedom of religion issue. While most readers are familiar with the traditional Islamic, Christian, and Hebrew prohibitions against sex between two males, this book also reveals other historic religions from around the world that neither opposed nor looked down on homosexuality. Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods argues that masculinity is the universal theme that formed historical interpretationwarriors and men of high status could not be sexually receptive or feminine and still be called men. This intriguing text shows how the modern homophile movements are in effect redefining masculinity to obliterate the stigma of being a sexually receptive man. Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods examines the significance of homosexuality in such religions as: the Sambians of New Guinea the Taoists of Ancient China Plato and the later Stoics Islamic Sufism Native American culture Hebrew Scriptures early Christianity Buddhism Men, Homosexuality, and the Gods is an enlightening book that honors homosexual claims to moral integrity and appreciates religion and religious figures without rancor. Easy-to-read and free of technical language, this volume is for anyone who has an academic, professional, or personal interest in theology and homosexuality. Par Alex Buchman. 2004
Unmistakably original, utterly heartfelt, stranger than fiction, hotter than any off-the-rack gay fantasy! Building on the success of his extraordinary…
debutthe critically acclaimed, #1 men&’s interest bestseller A Night in the Barracksformer U.S. Marine Alex Buchman presents a spellbinding, startlingly unique collection of erotic memoirs by or about bad boys in the Armed Forces. Buchman&’s radical approach to an otherwise rigidly formulaic sub-genre: he does the legion of purportedly true confessions books with a military theme one better: the first-person narratives he has assembled actually are true. Boldly defying the conventions of gay male one-handed reading, the unembellished chronicles Buchman brings us from the intensely homoerotic secret world of men in uniform are more erotically charged than any porn-by-numbers fantasy. The theme of Barracks Bad Boys is trouble. All-too-true stories of criminally sexy soldiers and sailors in trouble, who cause trouble, or who just plain are trouble. The unvarnished accounts of romance with baby-faced deserters bound for the brig make for riveting reading. Equally gripping is the disarmingly candid pillow talk of young military men whose trouble runs deeper than mere unauthorized absence or indecent acts. Some of the surprises you&’ll encounter in Barracks Bad Boys include: a straight, married soldier&’s detailed description of his one and only sexual experience with another man a seasoned military chaser&’s review of his all-time favorite sailor-hustlers a dazed gay studies author&’s I should have known better journal documenting how young sailors half his age seduced him, gave him street drugs, and pressured him to videotape them performing lewd acts Editor Buchman&’s own offbeat and powerful story of being taken by surprise by the sexual advance of a Marine sergeant who began rubbing Buchman&’s chest and asking him if he felt an urge to be evil . . . By turns hair-raising and wrenching, poignant and laugh-out-loud funny, these authentic accounts of sex in the Armed Forces are sure to elicit one universal reaction: no one could make this up! Barracks Bad Boys is compulsory reading for anyone interested in men in uniform; human sexuality in the military; and cutting-edge nonfiction literary erotica.Mucho Macho: Seduction, Desire, and the Homoerotic Lives of Latin Men
Par Chris Girman. 2004
Quality researchuniquely enhanced by the author&’s personal experience! In one of the first books to examine machismo from the perspective…
of Latin American and Latino men, Chris Girman relies on a compelling combination of ethnographic research and personal experience to explain how macho menmen like the author himselfregulate and sustain same-sex erotic encounters. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid description that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. While most of the literature on Latin American male same-sex desire ignores the significance of the male body in its investigation, this book shows why it is essential to focus on the macho male body and re-evaluates so-called machismo to forge a more nuanced description of Latin American masculinity. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin American men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid descriptions that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. With this book, you&’ll become familiar with various kinds of Latin-American homosexual behavior. Here&’s a glimpse at what you&’ll find inside: Machismo, Practice Theorists, and Macho Performance summarizes previous research on Latin American male [homo]sexuality and defines the author&’s concept of machismo and Latin American masculinity. Head, Hands, Balls, and Ass shows why focusing on the body as living matter, rather than metaphor (as is done in so many other books on sexuality), is the ideal point of entry into the study of Latin American male [homo]sexuality and masculinity. This chapter focuses on specific regions of the macho bodyhead, hands, balls, and assto explain how machismo actually promotes, rather than denies, sexual encounters between men. It also shows the importance of the Latin American family as a variable that structures the manner and frequency in which [homo]sexual encounters occur. The Dominican Tíguere and Hegemonic Masculinities takes a specific look at a very peculiar form of hegemonic masculinityrelying on cunning more than strength to come out on topthat is indigenous to the Dominican Republic. This chapter also tells the stories of five of the author&’s sexual encounters in that nation and discusses the tiguere style of masculine performance. Desire in a Costa Rican Prison analyzes the ways in which desire, power, and pleasure are constituted in the Latin American prison environment. Historical Representations of Same-Sex Desire examines two short storiesEl Matadero (Esteban Echeverria) and Comienza el Desfile (Reinaldo Arenas), which highlight male eroticism as important concepts within discourses on national identity. Both stories conceptualize same-sex desire within specific historical moments and demonstrate how male [homo]sexuality emerges and represents itself not in contrast to the dominant discourse, but within that discourse itself. Familiar, Familial Voices: Latino Men Speak Out documents the voices of gay-identified Latino men living in Central Texasmen who have come to love other Latin, Black, and Anglo men in the context of very full lives. These men reveal their conceptions of identity, race, performance, resistance, family, pleasure, desire, masculinity, silence, and place. Performing Matter[s]-Masculinity, the Male Body, and the Evocation of the [non]real defies the notion that written representations can capture the lived realities ofJewelry Box: A Collection of Histories (American Readers Series)
Par Aurelie Sheehan. 2013
Jewelry Box is a collection of intimate histories, concentrated renderings of getting older, leaving, remembering. Here, "history" is twinned with…
"story," where microcosms of daily life, drenched in the past, blossom from objects: a tube of mascara, a cat’s tail, mushroom paté. This collection explores nuances of sexuality, motherhood, and what it means to know life and tell a story. The Innocent Party (American Readers Series #17)
Par Aimee Parkison. 2012
"Aimee Parkison most often begins softly, slowly stripping away each layer of social interaction to get at what is numinous…
and frightening and necessary about living in the real world. These are stories both about the difficulty and the intense suddenness of human connection, about the profound link that exists between being in love and being alone."Brian EvensonFrom "The Glass Girl":On certain evenings in dark motels, she could transform her lip into the edge of the bottle, imagining her face was made of amber glass and the men paused above her only to take a drink of breath. Over the years, men drank and drank until there were only two sips left inside. They began sucking the air out of the glass that grew warm in the wrong places because of heat radiating off their hands. The men's breath along with white feathers fell over autumn winds drifting through open windows. In this collection, Kurt Vonnegut Fiction Prize–winner Aimee Parkison's characters struggle to understand what happens when the innocent party becomes the guilty party. With magical realist flair, secrets are aired with dirty laundry, but the stains never come clean. Carol Anshaw writes, "Aimee Parkison offers a distinct new voice to contemporary fiction. Her seductive stories explore childhood as a realm of sorrows, and reveal the afflictions of adults who emerge from this private geography."Aimee Parkison has an MFA from Cornell University. She is associate professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she teaches creative writing.Cómo viajar con un salmón

Par Poile Sengupta. 2010
This selection of six contemporary plays explores a wide range of issues — familial, social, mythological, political — with women…
centre stage. The plays are distinct from each other in structure, theme and style, but are bound together by a common thread — the position and role of women in family, social and political systems. Issues such as sexual abuse, in-law relationships, the trauma of ageing, the struggle for women’s empowerment, love and passion, desire and revenge, and dynastic politics are discussed through the varying perspectives of a number of characters, bringing an immediacy and urgency to the subjects under consideration. What is significant about the plays is that they highlight the manipulation of the English language resulting with the introduction of an ‘Indian’ syntax. Multilingualism is used to offset the so-called ‘westernisation’ that has been the by-product of the systematic globalisation of ‘third world’ countries. While the plays are meant to be staged, they are also very reader-friendly and will be entertaining as well as educative for the general reader.COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology (ISSN)
Par Gene Ambaum, Julio Anta, Ned Barnett, Ken Best, Armond Boudreaux, Eiri Brown. 2021
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees. When we weren’t sheltering in place, we were advised…
to wear masks, wash our hands, and practice social distancing. We watched in horror as medical personnel worked around the clock to care for the sick and dying. Businesses were shuttered, travel stopped, workers were furloughed, and markets dropped. And people continued to die.Amid all this uncertainty, writers and artists from around the world continued to create comics, commenting directly on how individuals, societies, governments, and markets reacted to the worldwide crisis. COVID Chronicles: A Comics Anthology collects more than sixty such short comics from a diverse set of creators, including indie powerhouses, mainstream artists, Ignatz and Eisner Award winners, and media cartoonists. In narrative styles ranging from realistic to fantastic, they tell stories about adjusting to working from home, homeschooling their kids, missing birthdays and weddings, and being afraid just to leave the house. They probe the failures of government leaders and the social safety net. They dig into the racial bias and systemic inequities that this pandemic helped bring to light. We see what it’s like to get the virus and live to tell about it, or to stand by helplessly as a loved one passes. At times heartbreaking and at others hopeful and humorous, these comics express the anger, anxiety, fear, and bewilderment we feel in the era of COVID-19. Above all, they highlight the power of art and community to help us make sense of a world in crisis, reminding us that we are truly all in this together. The comics in this collection have been generously donated by their creators. A portion of the the proceeds from the sale of this volume are being donated by the publisher to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) in support of comics shops, bookstores, and their employees who have been adversely affected by the pandemic. The Gurkha's Daughter: shortlisted for the Dylan Thomas prize
