en 1960, eut un destin extraordinaire. Sa vie fut traversée par les bouleversements de l'Histoire et par des engagements passionnés et contradictoires qu'Henri Troyat a voulu retracer. Tolstoï, Scriabine et Rilke sont quelques-uns des artistes que fréquentent ses parents (son père est peintre, sa mère pianiste). Après avoir renoncé à la musique puis à la philosophie, Pasternak découvre qu'il veut se consacrer à l'écriture. En 1914, son premier recueil de poésie, Un jumeau dans les nuages, révèle d'emblée l'originalité de son talent. En 1922, le recueil Ma soeur la vie assure à Boris Pasternak une vraie notoriété ; son art paraît avoir atteint sa maturité. Cependant la révolution le bouleverse, il pense qu'elle est l'ultime espoir de l'humanité contemporaine. Cette conviction s'exprime dans plusieurs poèmes épiques. Au cours des années trente, il est avant tout le traducteur de poètes tels que Goethe, Shakespeare, Shelley, Keats et Verlaine. En 1945, Pasternak commence à écrire Le Docteur Jivago. Ce roman fut longtemps interdit en Union soviétique, et parut d'abord en Italie en 1957, un avant que le Nobel soit attribué à son auteur. On contraignit alors Pasternak à renoncer à ce prix. Il mourut quelques mois plus tard. Avec cette biographie, Henri Troyat a restitué, au-delà de l'image convenue, la vision du monde d'un très grand écrivain.Paul Claudel, ou, L'enfer du génie
