Applying Rawls in the Twenty-First Century
Par Martin D. Carcieri. 2015
John Rawls is the most influential political thinker of the twentieth century. Most of the scholarly literature on Rawls defends,…
critiques, or elaborates on some aspect of his theory. These writings are often valuable, yet this book goes beyond them. Like a few scholars, rather than debating whether and how Rawls got things right or wrong, Martin Carcieri take his well-defended principles of justice - especially the equal liberty, fair equality of opportunity, and difference principles atthe core of his theory - as given and apply them to aspects of four major, enduring, concrete domestic policy, ethical, and constitutional issues. These applications yield counter-intuitive implications that will challenge the ideological left and right alike, contributing to our understanding both of Rawls and of these issues. At the core, this book deepens our understanding of these issues and points the way toward rational, just policy reform.Trauma and Forgiveness
Par C. Fred Alford. 2013
Contrary to the view of trauma popularized by literary theorists, Trauma and Forgiveness argues that the traumatized are capable of…
representing their experience and that we should therefore listen more and theorize less. Using stories and case studies, including testimonies from Holocaust survivors, as well as the victims of 'ordinary' trauma, C. Fred Alford shows that, while the traumatized are generally capable of representing their experience, this does little to heal them. He draws on the British Object Relations tradition in psychoanalysis to argue that forgiveness, which might be expected to help heal the traumatized, is generally an attempt to avoid the hard work of mourning losses that can never be made whole. Forgiveness is better seen as a virtue in the classical sense, a recognition of human vulnerability. The book concludes with an extended case study of the essayist Jean Amery and his refusal to forgive.Saturday Night Widows
Par Becky Aikman. 2013
Six marriages, six heartbreaks, one shared beginning. In her forties - a widow, too young, too modern to accept the…
role - Becky Aikman struggled to make sense of her place in an altered world. In this transcendent and infectiously wise memoir, she explores surprising new discoveries about how people experience grief and transcend loss and, following her own remarriage, forms a group with five other young widows to test these unconventional ideas. Together, these friends summon the humor, resilience, and striving spirit essential for anyone overcoming adversity. Meet the Saturday Night Widows: ringleader Becky, an unsentimental journalist who lost her husband to cancer; Tara, a polished mother of two, whose husband died in the throes of alcoholism after she filed for divorce; Denise, a widow of just five months, now struggling to get by; Marcia, a hard-driving corporate lawyer; Dawn, an alluring self-made entrepreneur whose husband was killed in a sporting accident, leaving two small children behind; and Lesley, a housewife who returned home one day to find that her husband had committed suicide. The women meet once a month, and over the course of a year, they strike out on ever more far-flung adventures, learning to live past the worst thing they thought could happen. They share emotional peaks and valleys - dating, parenting, moving, finding meaningful work, and reinventing themselves - while turning traditional thinking about loss and recovery upside down. Through it all runs the story of Aikman's own journey through grief and her love affair with a man who tempts her to marry again. In a transporting story of what friends can achieve when they hold each other up, Saturday Night Widows is a rare book that will make you laugh, think, and remind yourself that despite the utter unpredictability and occasional tragedy of life, it is also precious, fragile, and often more joyous than we recognize. From the Hardcover edition.Los duelos en la vida

Par Mark Michael Rowe. 2011
Despite popular images of priests seeking enlightenment in snow-covered mountain temples, the central concern of Japanese Buddhism is death. For…
that reason, Japanese Buddhism's social and economic base has long been in mortuary services--a base now threatened by public debate over the status, treatment, and location of the dead. Bonds of the Dead explores the crisis brought on by this debate and investigates what changing burial forms reveal about the ways temple Buddhism is perceived and propagated in contemporary Japan. Mark Rowe offers a crucial account of how religious, political, social, and economic forces in the twentieth century led to the emergence of new funerary practices in Japan and how, as a result, the care of the dead has become the most fundamental challenge to the continued existence of Japanese temple Buddhism. Far from marking the death of Buddhism in Japan, Rowe argues, funerary Buddhism reveals the tradition at its most vibrant. Combining ethnographic research with doctrinal considerations, this is a fascinating book for anyone interested in Japanese society and religion.Biogeography of the Quaternary Molluscs of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SpringerBriefs in Earth System Sciences)

Par Steve Gordon. 2015
Experts in end-of-life care tell us that we should talk about death and dying with relatives and friends, but how…
do we get such conversations off the ground in a society that historically has avoided the topic? This book provides one example of such a conversation. The coauthors take up challenging questions about pain, caregiving, grief, and what comes after death. Their unlikely collaboration is itself connected to death: the murders of two of Irene's closest friends and Steve's support in perpetuating memories of those friends' lives and not just their violent ends. The authors share the results of a no-holds-barred discussion they conducted for several years over email. Readers can consider a range of views on complicated issues to which there are no right answers. Letting ourselves pose certain questions has the potential to profoundly change the way we think about death, how we choose to die, and, just as importantly, the way we live.Honest, probing, sensitive, and even humorous at times, the completely open discussions in this book will help readers deal with a topic that most of us try to avoid but that everyone will face eventually. From the Trade Paperback edition. How It Feels When a Parent Dies

Par Ryan J. Rabett. 2007
This book examines the first human colonization of Asia and particularly the tropical environments of Southeast Asia during the Upper…
Pleistocene. In studying the unique character of the Asian archaeological record, it reassesses long-accepted propositions about the development of human 'modernity. ' Ryan J. Rabett reveals an evolutionary relationship between colonization, the challenges encountered during this process - especially in relation to climatic and environmental change - and the forms of behaviour that emerged. This book argues that human modernity is not something achieved in the remote past in one part of the world, but rather is a diverse, flexible, responsive, and ongoing process of adaptation. The Divine Art of Dying
Par Karen Speerstra, Herbert Anderson, foreword by Ira Byock. 2013
The Divine Art of Dying looks at the unique moment when a person turns toward death and examines what the…
dying person and their caregivers can expect. Based on the author’s own current experience, it’s about how we might die well and live well up to the very end of our physical existence. Combining personal stories with solid research on palliative and hospice care, this book identifies the decisions the dying one and his or her loved ones and friends must make. Unlike other books on dying, The Divine Art of Dying takes a broader approach than just a medical one. It is not a “case book” but rather a well integrated look at the divine art of living and dying to the fullest, that includes spiritual insights from many sources along with references from literature, movies, and current culture. Karen Speerstra is an award-winning author. Her previous Divine Arts title Sophia: The Feminine Face of God (ISBN: 978-1611250046) won the 2013 Nautilus gold award. Written in a very readable style, The Divine Art Of Dying addresses real and common fears and the challenges of letting go and handing over a life. The book introduces new concepts to the body of writing on death and dying. It explains the medical complexities of end-of-life choices and gives helpful advice to caregivers to the dying in every chapter. and authentically chronicles the author’s own dying process. Foreword by author and internationally recognized authority on hospice and palliative care Dr. Ira Byock.Shane Comes Home
