Par Stephen L. Cook. 0201
Biblical texts create worlds of meaning and invite readers to enter them. When readers enter such textual worlds, which are…
strange and complex, they are confronted with theological claims. With this in mind, the purpose of the IBT series is to help serious readers in their experience of reading and interpreting by providing guides for their journeys into textual worlds. The focus of the series is not so much on the world behind the text as on the worlds created by the texts in their engagement with readers. Nowhere is the world of the biblical text stranger than in the apocalyptic literature of both the Old and New Testaments. In this volume, Stephen Cook makes the puzzling visions and symbols of the biblical apocalyptic literature intelligible to modern readers. He begins with definitions of apocalypticism and apocalyptic literature and introduces the various scholarly approaches to and issues for our understanding of the text. Cook introduces the reader to the social and historical worlds of the apocalyptic groups that gave rise to such literature and leads the reader into a better appreciation and understanding of the theological import of biblical apocalyptic literature. In the second major section of the book, Cook guides the reader through specific examples of the Bible's apocalyptic literature. He addresses both the best-known examples (the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation) and other important but lesser known examples (Zechariah and some words of Jesus and Paul). The Old Testament
Par John Kaltner, Steven L. Mckenzie. 2007
In a straightforward and understandable style, without distortion or oversimplification, Steven L. McKenzie and John Kaltner introduce readers to the…
content of the Old Testament and to critical methods developed to read it. Utilizing the finest modern scholarship, the authors detail the role of editors in shaping the Old Testament, examine the historical and literary contexts in which it grew, and discuss important interpretive issues in each book. Each chapter introduces the biblical book at hand through the lenses of content, growth, context, and interpretation, and the text moves through the Bible in the order of the Jewish canonical units, Torah, Former Prophets, Latter Prophets, and Writings.Abingdon New Testament Commentaries | Acts: Acts (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)
Par Beverly Roberts Gaventa. 2003
In a striking departure from customary readings of the Acts of the Apostles as the story of the growth of…
the church, Gaventa argues that Luke's second volume has to do with nothing less than the activity of God. From the beginning of the story at Jesus' Ascension and extending until well past the final report of Paul's activity in Rome, Luke narrates a relentlessly theological story, in which matters of institutional history or biography play only an incidental role. Gaventa pays careful attention to Luke's story of God, as well as to the numerous characters who set themselves in opposition to God's plan. What Does Revelation Reveal?: Unlocking the Mystery
Par Warren Carter. 2011
The Book of Revelation has been mysterious, confusing, and misunderstood for centuries. Its content has been studied and analyzed by…
scholars from every corner of the globe. What is it about Revelation that draws us to it? Is this biblical book about end-time mysteries and hidden codes? Does and it relate to our present day? So what does Revelation actually reveal? Or should Revelation be left behind? According to Dr. Carter, the book of Revelation can tell us about biblical times as well as our own. It can show us how we, as Christians, are to live and hope for our world. Revelation reveals God's Word to God's World: that culture accommodation is dangerous, that judgment is taking place now, that the world does have a chance to repent, that there are evil powers working behind the scene, that the time is up for the eternal empire, and that God is coming in triumph. In a brief introductory chapter, the author addresses the question of why we need to confess our sins, and offers…
three reflections in response: Sin as Pride, Sin as Violation of Boundaries, Sin and the Possibility of Forgiveness. The book includes seventy prayers of confession and words of assurance, with accompanying liturgies and music suggestions (Scripture and hymn indexes included!). The prayers are offered in three sections, confession and pardon related to: The Human Condition, The Holy Scriptures, The Liturgical Year. The Just in Time! Series offers brief, practical resources of immediate help for pastors at an affordable price.Introduccion al Nuevo Testamento AETH: Introduction to the New Testament Spanish

organized, concrete manner. Par Victor Paul Furnish. 2007
Accepting the widespread view that 1 Thessalonians is the earliest surviving Pauline letter, Furnish commends reading it as fully as…
possible on its own terms, without presupposing or imposing themes or positions that are explicit only in letters of a later date. While he agrees with commentators who note this letter's pastoral aims and character, he is more convinced than some that it also exhibits a rich and coherent theological point of view. Furnish interprets 2 Thessalonians as the work of an anonymous Paulinist writing several decades after the apostle's death. He regards this letter, too, as historically and theologically valuable, although less for what it discloses about Paul's ministry and thought than for what it shows about the reception and interpretation of Paul in the late first-century church.Hard Times Come Again No More: Suffering and Hope

Par Terence E. Fretheim. 1996
In this volume, Terence E. Fretheim seeks to introduce the Pentateuch to modern readers, stressing its continuing capacity to speak…
a word of--or about--God. The two chapters of Part One provide an orientation to the critical study of the Pentateuch and present a proposal for reading the Pentateuch in terms of its rhetorical strategy. That strategy, Fretheim argues, is designed in such a way as to have a certain effect upon its readers, most basically to shape their faith and life. The five chapters of Part Two focus on the individual books that comprise the Pentateuch.Ministerio | Adoración cristiana: Teología y práctica desde la óptica protestante

Par Paul Trebilco. 2011
What terms would early Christians have used to address one another? In the first book-length study on this topic, Paul…
Trebilco investigates the origin, use and function of seven key self-designations: 'brothers and sisters', 'believers', 'saints', 'the assembly', 'disciples', 'the Way', and 'Christian'. In doing so, he discovers what they reveal about the identity, self-understanding and character of the early Christian movement. This study sheds light on the theology of particular New Testament authors and on the relationship of early Christian authors and communities to the Old Testament and to the wider context of the Greco-Roman world. Trebilco's writing is informed by other work in the area of sociolinguistics on the development of self-designations and labels and provides a fascinating insight into this often neglected topic.Estudio Bíblico para Mujeres: Guía y Libro de Ejercicios

Losers Like Us: Redefining Discipleship after Epic Failure
Par Daniel Hochhalter. 2014
In 2008, after seven years of preparation, Daniel Hochhalter permanently failed his PhD, leaving him with no refunds, no transferable…
credits, no recourse to appeal or try again, and no hope of gaining the qualifications needed for his desired career. Then he lost his job. Devastated and in crisis, with no Plan B and no clue how to redeem his future, he looked to the twelve disciples and discovered that--despite their gaping faults and sins--God still loved them and used them to change the world. With fresh warmth and wisdom, ample hope and humor, Losers Like Us skillfully intertwines Dan's own story with theirs to show how our worst mistakes and greatest failures bring us to a place of teachableness, egolessness, brokenness, and empathy--the very qualifications required to receive God's love and grace, and to manifest his kingdom on earth.
