microdata Previous literature on many other countries has often been constrained by limited data availability about outsourcing but research contained in this book exploits unique firm-level data and directly tests theoretical hypotheses derived from new firm heterogeneity trade models Productivity capital labor ratio and R D intensity are examined at the firm level While rich empirical results in this book convince us how powerful the orthodox economic theory is in understanding Japanese firms detailed firm-level findings combined with accessible and concise overviews of Japanese international trade are widely informative for international economists experts of Japanese society business strategists for offshoring and policy makers in both developed and developing economies This book further discusses how boundaries of Japanese firms traditionally sheltered by language and cultural barriers are affected by outsourcing decisions simultaneously crossing national borders and firm boundaries The interpretations of Japanese characteristics in outsourcing have deep implications for understanding drastically changing Japanese business amid globalizationVarieties of Liberalization and the New Politics of Social Solidarity
Par Kathleen Thelen. 2014
This book examines contemporary changes in labor market institutions in the United States, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, focusing…
on developments in three arenas - industrial relations, vocational education and training, and labor market policy. While confirming a broad, shared liberalizing trend, it finds that there are in fact distinct varieties of liberalization associated with very different distributive outcomes. Most scholarship equates liberal capitalism with inequality and coordinated capitalism with higher levels of social solidarity. However, this study explains why the institutions of coordinated capitalism and egalitarian capitalism coincided and complemented one another in the 'Golden Era' of postwar development in the 1950s and 1960s, and why they no longer do so. Contrary to the conventional wisdom, this study reveals that the successful defense of the institutions traditionally associated with coordinated capitalism has often been a recipe for increased inequality due to declining coverage and dualization. Conversely, it argues that some forms of labor market liberalization are perfectly compatible with continued high levels of social solidarity and indeed may be necessary to sustain it.Strategic Conversations
Par J. C. Spender, Bruce A. Strong. 2014
Most organizations fail to take full advantage of their employees' knowledge, initiative, and imagination. In this accessible and practical book,…
J. -C. Spender and Bruce Strong provide a guide for building entrepreneurial workforces through carefully designed conversations between management and employees. These 'strategic conversations' make employees partners in the strategy development process, engaging them to help shape the organization's future. The result is transformational: instead of strategy being a dry, periodic planning exercise for the few, it becomes a dynamic and continuous act of co-creation enriched by the many. Case studies illustrate how leading organizations have used strategic conversations to build sustained competitive advantage, create innovative business models, make better decisions under uncertainty, reduce the need for change management, and enhance employee engagement. The book will appeal to managers, entrepreneurs of all stripes, and teachers and students in schools of business and public administration.Grundlagen der Mikroökonomik

analysis and restoration of the codices back to Jordan. For the first time, a very thorough analysis of the metal and its origins is argued by a senior analyst in the private sector.David Elkington provides a brief account of the discovery. Added to this is a groundbreaking article by Dr Margaret Barker placing the codices in their proper historical and theological context, arguing for their authenticity and the need for further research. Her case is underscored by Prof Philip Davies, the man who was prominent in breaking the embargo on the Dead Sea Scrolls in the early 1990s. An essay by Dr Keith Hearne, one of the world's foremost psychologists, explores the effect of unscrupulous blogging on the delivery of fact and context in history. He discusses the case for religious 'shock' in the light of the implications of the discovery.Jennifer Elkington discusses the effect of the Thoneman affair in the context of proper academic behaviour whilst revealing the fact that very few individuals have had, or asked for access to, proper samples and analysis of the codices. The book discusses how to establish a land-use system for small and medium-sized cities in order to promote low carbon…

Par Edward Castronova. 2014
Private currencies have always existed, from notes printed by individual banks to the S&H Green Stamps to Bitcoin. Today’s economy…
has seen an explosion of new forms of monetary exchange not created by the federal government. Credit card companies offer points that can be traded in for a variety of goods and services, from airline miles to online store credit. Online game creators have devised new mediums of electronic exchange that turn virtual money into real money. Meanwhile, real money is increasingly going digital, where it competes with private currencies like Bitcoin. The virtual and the real economic worlds are intermingling more than ever before, raising the possibility that this new money might eventually replace the government-run system of dollars, euros, and yen. Edward Castronova is the leading researcher in this field, a founder of scholarly online game studies and an expert on the economies of virtual worlds. In this dynamic and essential work, he explores the current phenomenon of virtual currencies and what it will mean legally, politically, and economically in the future. In doing so, he provides a fascinating, often surprising discourse on the meaning of money itself#151;what it is, what we think it is, and how we relate to it on an emotional level.Climate Change Signals and Response: A Strategic Knowledge Compendium for India

made of lead. These lead codices, as they have become known, contain mysterious symbols and inscriptions. One tablet in particular features a portrait of Jesus and has preserved the seven seals that would have bound it together along its left-hand side. David and Jennifer Elkington photographed the books, brought samples to the UK for analysis, and assembled a team of eminent scholars to study them. At the same time, the books were quickly becoming an international phenomenon, the Israelis and Jordanians began a very public dispute over the location of the site where they were discovered. Convinced that the codices are the earliest Christian documents ever found, the Elkingtons put their reputations on the line as they raced to authenticate the find amidst an array of vested interests which sought to suppress them. In their quest to crack the code, the Elkingtons have been subjected to personal threat but they have continued the fight to ensure the world understands the importance of the codices, which may well pre-date the New Testament. Their significance in our understanding of early Christianity cannot be underestimated.Collaborative Value Co-creation in the Platform Economy (Translational Systems Sciences #11)

A cold, hard look at how modern economics has failed us and why we need a new measure of progressModern…
economics has fallen short. It has widened the gap between rich and poor. It has not allocated the world's resources fairly. It has brought the West to the brink of financial ruin. It has placed short-term gain before long-term progress. And it has made us focus on the individual, not the society. The end result is a worldwide financial crisis of epic proportions and a planet being scraped clean of the resources needed by future generations, and things are only getting worse. In The End of Progress: How Modern Economics Has Failed Us popular economist Graeme Maxton looks at what went wrong, and what we can do to get ourselves back on track.During the Age of Enlightenment society flourished, propelled by the wonder of new discoveries, radical ideas for economic and social development, and a sense that we all had a responsibility to improve our world. It's time to get back to those ideals, step back and examine our values, and work out what humankind really needs.Presents a chilling look at our current financial system along with a compelling argument for what we need to changeArgues for new measures of progress that emphasize what really matters, not personal greedOffers a timely look at our broken society and where we're headed nextA thought-provoking, informative book, The End of Progress looks at what got us into our present mess, and shines light onto the road ahead.Tomorrow's World

the verge of collapsing. Fueled by a top rating from DBRS, ABCP had found its way into the portfolios of some of Canada's most sophisticated investors as well as vulnerable retail investors who didn't know what they were holding. The failure of the $32 billion market could have tipped Canadian and foreign credit default swap markets into chaos if it weren't for the swift actions of a few powerful asset holders. Collectively, through the Montreal Accord and led by veteran Canadian lawyer Purdy Crawford, they managed to hold the Canadian ABCP market back from the brink of collapse by crafting a complex and innovative solution.Back from the Brink goes behind the scenes of the ABCP crisis to examine how a solution was reached and lessons learned that could prevent or mitigate future crises. The authors also examine the imaginative use of the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and describe the roles played by the banks, the major investors, rating agencies, and the financial regulators in the crisis's origins and conclusions. Back from the Brink holds important lessons for anyone interested in Canadian law, the future of complex investments, and Canada's capital markets.Choice, Preferences, and Procedures

phenomena. This book expands the explanatory scope of econophysics to the real economy by using methods from statistical physics to analyse the success and failure of companies. Using large data sets of companies and income-earners in Japan and Europe, a distinguished team of researchers show how these methods allow us to analyse companies, from huge corporations to small firms, as heterogeneous agents interacting at multiple layers of complex networks. They then show how successful this approach is in explaining a wide range of recent findings relating to the dynamics of companies. With mathematics kept to a minimum, the book is not only a lively introduction to the field of econophysics but also provides fresh insights into company behaviour.Growing Public
Par Peter H. Lindert. 2004
Growing Public examines the question of whether social policies that redistribute income impose constraints on economic growth. Taxes and transfers…
have been debated for centuries, but only now can we get a clear view of the whole evolution of social spending. What kept prospering nations from using taxes for social programs until the end of the nineteenth century? Why did taxes and spending then grow so much, and what are the prospects for social spending in this century? Why did North America become a leader in public education in some ways and not others? Lindert finds answers in the economic history and logic of political voice, population aging, and income growth. Contrary to traditional beliefs, the net national costs of government social programs are virtually zero. This book not only shows that no Darwinian mechanism has punished the welfare states, but uses history to explain why this surprising result makes sense. Contrary to the intuition of many economists and the ideology of many politicians, social spending has contributed to, rather than inhibited, economic growth.
