Par Shanika Jayde MacEachern. 2022
An educational and heartfelt retelling of the story of the Mi'kmaq and their traditional lands, Mi'kma'ki, for young readers, focused…
on the generational traumas of the Indian Residential School System. "The story of the Mi'kmaw people is one that very few truly know, Ladybug. Even fewer understand what happened at the residential schools. It is a hard story to tell, but you must know the truth. Sit and I will tell you the story." When seven-year-old Muinji'j comes home from school one day, her Nana and Papa can tell right away that she's upset. Her teacher has been speaking about the residential schools. Unlike most of her fellow students, Muinji'j has always known about the residential schools. But what she doesn't understand is why the schools existed and why children would have died there. Nana and Papa take Muinji'j aside and tell her the whole story, from the beginning. They help her understand all of the decisions that were made for the Mi'kmaq, not with the Mi'kmaq, and how those decisions hurt her people. They tell her the story of her people before their traditional ways were made illegal, before they were separated and sent to reservations, before their words, their beliefs, and eventually, their children, were taken from them. A poignant, honest, and necessary book featuring brilliant artwork from Mi'kmaw artist Zeta Paul and words inspired by Muinji'j MacEachern's true story, Muinji'j Asks Why will inspire conversation, understanding, and allyship for readers of all agesCreating the Good Life: Applying Aristotle's Wisdom to Find Meaning and Happiness
Par James O'Toole. 2005
Professionals and business people in midlife are increasingly asking themselves "what's next?" in their careers and personal lives. Creating the…
Good Life draws on the wisdom of the ages to help contemporary men and women plan for satisfying, useful, moral, and meaningful second halves of their lives. For centuries, the brightest people in Western societies have looked to Aristotle for guidance on how to lead a good life and how to create a good society. Now James O'Toole--the Mortimer J. Adler Senior Fellow of the Aspen Institute--translates that classical philosophical framework into practical, comprehensible terms to help professionals and business people apply it to their own lives and work. His book helps thoughtful readers address some of the profound questions they are currently struggling with in planning their futures: • How do I find meaning and satisfaction? • How much money do I need in order to be happy? • What is the right balance between work, family, and leisure? • What are my responsibilities to my community? • How can I create a good society in my own company? Bridging philosophy and self-help, O'Toole's book shows how happiness ultimately is attainable no matter one's level of income, if one uses Aristotle's practical exercises to ask the right questions and to discipline oneself to pursue things that are "good for us." The book is the basis for O'Toole's new "Good Life" seminar, where thoughtful men and women gather to create robust and satisfying life plans. On My Way
Par Kristina Tracy, Deepak Chopra. 2010
On My Way to a Happy Life, by New York Times best-selling author Deepak Chopra, is based on his bestseller…
for adults, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. In this new book, children will discover seven "Keys" to living a happy and meaningful life. For example, the "Key to All Good Things" teaches kids about giving and receiving, and explains that what they put out to the world is what they will get back. The "Key to Reaching Your Dreams" helps children realize how much power they have over their own lives and where this power comes from. Each of the seven sections in this book presents a Key, as well as a beautifully illustrated example emphasizing how it works in the world. These Keys, which have their origins in ancient Indian teachings, give children what Deepak believes are the most important traits they can possess: the ability to love and have compassion . . . and to spread that love and compassion to others.Secrets of Creation: The Mystery Of The Prime Numbers (Urbanomic / Redactions)
Par Robin Mackay, Conrad Shawcross, Matthew Watkins. 2015
An artist and a mathematician debate, find common ground, and jointly create an assemblage that is neither (or both) an…
artwork and a mathematical model.A week-long residency project brought together artist Conrad Shawcross and mathematician Matthew Watkins to reflect on the ways in which artists use (or misuse) scientific and mathematical concepts. Secrets of Creation documents this fascinating meeting of worlds, presenting both the week's discussions and debates, and the project upon which Shawcross and Watkins subsequently embarked.Navigating a route that tacked between formalism and natural language, experts and laymen, quantity and quality, poetics and mechanics, Shawcross and Watkins gradually forged a shared discourse in which the concerns of the artist and those of the mathematician could find a common ground. The project ended with their joint creation of an assemblage that was neither (or both) an artwork and a mathematical model. If You Want to Visit a Sea Garden
Par Kay Weisman. 2020
Discover the wonder of ancient sea gardens on the Northwest Coast Sea gardens have been created by First Peoples on…
the Northwest coast for more than three thousand years. These gardens consist of stone reefs that are constructed at the lowest tide line, encouraging the growth of clams and other marine life on the gently sloped beach. This lyrical story follows a young child and an older family member who set out to visit a sea garden early one morning, as the lowest tides often occur at dawn. After anchoring their boat, they explore the beach, discover the many sea creatures that live there, hear the sputtering of clams and look closely at the reef. They reflect on the people who built the wall long ago, as well as those who have maintained it over the years. After digging for clams, they tidy up the beach, then return home.An author’s note provides further information about sea gardens (also known as clam gardens), which yield a reliable food source and have been traditional places of learning. They have been found along the Pacific coast, from Alaska to British Columbia to Washington State, and some of these gardens are being restored today. The manuscript has been vetted and approved by the scientists of the Clam Garden Network and Kwaxsistalla Wathl’thla Clan Chief Adam Dick. Roy Henry Vickers, whose ancestry includes the Tsimshian, Haida and Heiltsuk First Nations, has created hauntingly beautiful images to accompany the text.Key Text Featuresauthor’s noteCorrelates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts:CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.2>With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.6Name the author and illustrator of a text and define the role of each in presenting the ideas or information in a text. What's Alive? have nightmares, or we&’re filled with anxiety and fear. And when you&’re a kid, you don&’t always understand why or what to do about it. Your Mind Makes Thoughts Like Your Butt Makes Farts is funny and gross, but more importantly, it gives kids the big tools they need to cultivate a relationship with their mind, to become its friend and understand that they don&’t have to listen to everything it says—to realize that thoughts (like gas) will pass.Rural China: Economic and Social Change in the Late Twentieth Century (Studies On Ethnic Groups In China Ser.)
Par Thomas Heberer, Jie Fan, Wolfgang Taubmann. 2005
This book reports the findings of two field studies conducted between 1993 and 2001 in seven townships and six provinces…
in China. The authors describe the process of rural urbanization and its related economic, social, and political changes by focusing mainly on the zhen (town), in addition to administrative offices and companies involved in the local economy, and village committees. The authors show that the social changes resulting from China's economic reforms are occurring mainly from below, and that this process is also resulting in a weakening of the economic and political dominance of the central government. Other changes discussed in this study include the development of new ownership structures and the increasing dominance of the private sector; a shift in the functions of administrative offices as the bureaucracy becomes increasingly business oriented; the rise of a new local elite; a rebirth of traditional social structures (clans, local associations); and the emergence of new interest groups and institutions to represent their needs.
