Becoming Babe Ruth
Par Matt Tavares. 2013
Before he is known as the Babe, George Herman Ruth is just a boy who lives in Baltimore and gets…
into a lot of trouble. But when he turns seven, his father brings him to the gates of Saint Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, and his life is changed forever. At Saint Mary’s, he’s expected to study hard and follow a lot of rules. But there is one good thing about Saint Mary’s: almost every day, George gets to play baseball. Here, under the watchful eye of Brother Matthias, George evolves as a player and as a man, and when he sets off into the wild world of big-league baseball, the school, the boys, and Brother Matthias are never far from his heart. With vivid illustrations and clear affection for his subject, Matt Tavares sheds light on an icon who learned early that life is what you make of it — and sends home a message about honoring the place from which you came.Baseball Fun (Sports Fun)

Par Kay Weisman. 2020
Discover the wonder of ancient sea gardens on the Northwest Coast Sea gardens have been created by First Peoples on…
the Northwest coast for more than three thousand years. These gardens consist of stone reefs that are constructed at the lowest tide line, encouraging the growth of clams and other marine life on the gently sloped beach. This lyrical story follows a young child and an older family member who set out to visit a sea garden early one morning, as the lowest tides often occur at dawn. After anchoring their boat, they explore the beach, discover the many sea creatures that live there, hear the sputtering of clams and look closely at the reef. They reflect on the people who built the wall long ago, as well as those who have maintained it over the years. After digging for clams, they tidy up the beach, then return home.An author’s note provides further information about sea gardens (also known as clam gardens), which yield a reliable food source and have been traditional places of learning. They have been found along the Pacific coast, from Alaska to British Columbia to Washington State, and some of these gardens are being restored today. The manuscript has been vetted and approved by the scientists of the Clam Garden Network and Kwaxsistalla Wathl’thla Clan Chief Adam Dick. Roy Henry Vickers, whose ancestry includes the Tsimshian, Haida and Heiltsuk First Nations, has created hauntingly beautiful images to accompany the text.Key Text Featuresauthor’s noteCorrelates to the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts:CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.2>With prompting and support, identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.K.6Name the author and illustrator of a text and define the role of each in presenting the ideas or information in a text. You Never Heard of Sandy Koufax?!

Par Joe Tiller. 2011
When opportunity knocked, Joe Tiller busted the door down. Tiller became a major college head football coach somewhat late in…
his career. He was hired as the head coach at Wyoming just 12 days after his 48th birthday and became the head coach at Purdue two weeks before his 54th birthday. A disciple of the wide-open offenses used in the former Western Athletic Conference, Tiller's Wyoming teams enjoyed great success in what he fondly refers to as the "Wacky WAC." After leaving the Cowboys for Purdue, some coaches insisted that his one-back, spread offense wouldn't fly in the Big Ten Conference, with its physical, smash-mouth style of play. Instead, Tiller's fast-breaking offense, now nicknamed "basketball on grass," took the Big Ten by storm. Before Tiller came aboard, Purdue had endured 12-consecutive losing seasons. But under Tiller, the Boilermakers have enjoyed arguably their most successful winning stretch ever. Tiller's first eight teams went to bowl games, including the Rose Bowl. Before becoming a head coach, Tiller had served as an assistant at Montana State (his alma mater), Washington State, Purdue and Wyoming. He also spent nine years in Canada with Calgary of the CFL as an assistant coach, interim head coach, and in the front office-where he was responsible for booking rock star Alice Cooper and evangelist Billy Graham for appearances at McMahon Stadium, home of the Stampeders. In many ways, Tiller is a typical who has spent most of his life in the conservative Midwest and the open spaces of the western United States. A regular Joe, Tiller's laid-back style, wry sense of humor and, of course, winning ways has made him a hit with Purdue players and fans alike.Baseball for Kids: A Young Fan's Guide to the History of the Game (Biographies of Today's Best Players)
