Proofs & Theories: Essays on Poetry
Par Louise Gluck. 1994
Winner of the Nobel Prize in LiteratureProofs and Theories, winner of the PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Non-Fiction, is an illuminating…
collection of essays by Louise Glück, one of this country's most brilliant poets.Like her poems, the prose of Glück, who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1993 for The Wild Iris, is compressed, fastidious, fierce, alert, and absolutely unconsoled. The force of her thought is evident everywhere in these essays, from her explorations of other poets' work to her skeptical contemplation of current literary critical notions such as "sincerity" and "courage." Here also are Glück's revealing reflections on her own education and life as a poet, and a tribute to her teacher and mentor, Stanley Kunitz. Proofs and Theories is not a casual collection. It is the testament of a major poet.Eleven Winters of Discontent: The Siberian Internment and the Making of a New Japan
Par Sherzod Muminov. 2022
The odyssey of 600,000 imperial Japanese soldiers incarcerated in Soviet labor camps after World War II and their fraught repatriation…
to postwar Japan. In August 1945 the Soviet Union seized the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo and the colony of Southern Sakhalin, capturing more than 600,000 Japanese soldiers, who were transported to labor camps across the Soviet Union but primarily concentrated in Siberia and the Far East. Imprisonment came as a surprise to the soldiers, who thought they were being shipped home. The Japanese prisoners became a workforce for the rebuilding Soviets, as well as pawns in the Cold War. Alongside other Axis POWs, they did backbreaking jobs, from mining and logging to agriculture and construction. They were routinely subjected to “reeducation” glorifying the Soviet system and urging them to support the newly legalized Japanese Communist Party and to resist American influence in Japan upon repatriation. About 60,000 Japanese didn’t survive Siberia. The rest were sent home in waves, the last lingering in the camps until 1956. Already laid low by war and years of hard labor, returnees faced the final shock and alienation of an unrecognizable homeland, transformed after the demise of the imperial state. Sherzod Muminov draws on extensive Japanese, Russian, and English archives—including memoirs and survivor interviews—to piece together a portrait of life in Siberia and in Japan afterward. Eleven Winters of Discontent reveals the real people underneath facile tropes of the prisoner of war and expands our understanding of the Cold War front. Superpower confrontation played out in the Siberian camps as surely as it did in Berlin or the Bay of Pigs.Digital Holocaust Memory, Education and Research
Par Victoria Grace Walden. 2021
This book explores the diverse range of practical and theoretical challenges and possibilities that digital technologies and platforms pose for…
Holocaust memory, education and research. From social media to virtual reality, 360-degree imaging to machine learning, there can be no doubt that digital media penetrate practice in these fields. As the Holocaust moves beyond living memory towards solely mediated memory, it is imperative that we pay critical attention to the way digital technologies are shaping public memory and education and research. Bringing together the voices of heritage and educational professionals, and academics from the arts and humanities and the social sciences, this interdisciplinary collection explores the practicalities of creating digital Holocaust projects, the educational value of such initiatives, and considers the extent to which digital technologies change the way we remember, learn about and research the Holocaust, thinking through issues such as ethics, embodiment, agency, community, and immersion. At its core, this volume interrogates the extent to which digital interventions in these fields mark an epochal shift in Holocaust memory, education and research, or whether they continue to be shaped by long-standing debates and guidelines developed in the broadcast era.Hitler's Spies: Lena and the Prelude to Operation Sealion
Par Mel Kavanagh. 2020
The incredible true story of the first four Nazi spies to infiltrate British soil is revealed in this WWII history. After…
the swift takeover of France and the Low Countries, Nazi Germany was on the crest of a wave. Only the United Kingdom stood in its way. Hitler quickly devised plans for the invasion of England, codenamed Operation Sealion. To lay the groundwork, a team of spies would be sent in advance to act as pathfinders for the incoming forces. Codenamed Operation Lena, this phase of the plan was considered a suicide mission by German military intelligence. They had only thirty days to recruit and train agents who had a less than convincing grasp of English language or customs. Hitler’s Spies revels the story of the first four agents to arrive on English soil—collectively known by MI5 as “The Brussels Four.”Using a wealth of primary materials, including newly declassified sources, Mel Kavanagh sheds light on one of the most audacious yet little-known operations of the Second World War, in which undertrained men were sent behind enemy lines at a time when Britain was gripped by spy paranoia.Barbed-Wire Blues: A Blinded Musician’s Memoir of Wartime Captivity 1940–1943
Par Bernard Harris. 2020
“Quite uplifting . . . This book looks less at the usual escape attempts but concentrates on lifting people of the camp…
through entertainment.” —UK HistorianAs the author, a young Army bandsman lies wounded at the Battle of Corinth, he is shot between the eyes at point blank range. Miraculously he survives but is blinded. In a makeshift hospital a young Greek volunteer saves his life with slices of boiled egg. Captured Allied medics later restore the sight in one eye.In this moving and entertaining memoir Bernard describes daily life in POW camps in Greece and Germany. He established a theatrical group and an orchestra that performed for fellow POWs and their German guards. A superb raconteur, as well as a gifted musician, the author’s anecdotes are memorably amusing. Bernard was repatriated via Sweden in late 1943.While blinded in one eye and seriously wounded, the author was told by his New Zealand doctor, fellow POW and musician John Borrie, “When nothing else will do, music will always lift one up.” Barbed-Wire Blues’ inspirational, ever optimistic tone will surely have the same effect on its readers.“While not a story of blood, guts and bullets it does do a very good job of telling the story of a man’s recovery from a wound that should have killed him until his repatriation and the return of the use of his arm, and then the return of the sight to one eye. This book is worth taking the time to read, as it can be considered to be the story of one man’s battle against adversity.” —ArmoramaTragedy & Betrayal in the Dutch Resistance
Par Samuel De Korte. 2020
“A book about the execution of five resistance heroes in Zwolle . . . a tribute to [de Korte’s] great-uncle and his…
four comrades from the resistance.” —RTV OostOn the night of 31 March 1945, five men were woken and taken from their cells in the city of Zwolle, in The Netherlands. They were put in a vehicle and escorted by the German occupying forces to a street nearby, where all five were lined up and executed. The corpses were left behind as the Germans left the scene. Whether by accident or betrayal, these men had fallen in to the clutches of the Sicherheitsdienst, the Nazi intelligence service. Although the liberation was at hand (Zwolle would be freed less than two weeks later), these men did not live to see it.This book not only reveals what the men had done and the reasons behind their execution, but also the experiences of their wives, who had tried to obtain their husbands’ release, while other women were deported to concentration camps. Attention is also paid to the execution and the process leading up to it.Combining interviews with descendants, eyewitnesses, acquaintances, archival research, historical books and newspapers, family member and history student Samuel de Korte recreates an image of the executed men on that fateful morning and the families they left behind. Using a number of rare and well-known photographs, the condemned are portrayed as resistance fighters as well as fathers and husbands. The book examines not only the consequences of the men and their actions, but also the grief of the women who were left behind.“A fascinating read . . . definitely recommended.” —UK HistorianGlass and Keys

This book is the result of Jonah Salander’s habit of walking the streets of New York City , where for various reasons—including his love for the city and his profound regard and empathy for the people who live there, and as a tool for his work as a film director—he photographs those vignettes he discovers. These photographs inspired the photographer’s father Lawrence to write the accompanying poems. There are many ways when sitting quietly whereby our emotions may be stirred. By pictures, static or moving, by sound,…
recorded or natural, by smell and even touch. However, the medium by which our minds have most latitude to wander is the written word. This can be in many forms but the one which arguably makes the lasting impression is poetry.Circumstances may change but the memories live on.How Not To Write Poetry

Par Felisa A. Smith. 2021
What can the interactions of ancient mammals and their environments tell us about the present—and the future?Classic paleontology has focused…
on the study of fossils and the reconstruction of lineages of extinct species. But as diverse fossils of animals and plants were unearthed and catalogued, it became possible to reconstruct more elaborate ecosystems, tying together plants, animals, and geology. By the second half of the twentieth century, this effort gave birth to the field of paleoecology: the study of the interactions between organisms and their environments across geologic timescales. In Mammalian Paleoecology, Felisa Smith broadly considers extinct mammals in an ecological context. Arguing that the past has much to teach us and that mammals, which display an impressive array of diverse life history and ecological characteristics, are the ideal organism through which to view the fossil record, Smith• reviews the history, major fossil-hunting figures, and fundamental principles of paleoecology, including stratigraphy, dating, and taphonomy• discusses the importance of mammal body size, how to estimate size, and what size and shape reveal about long-dead organisms• explains the structure, function, and utility of different types of mammal teeth• highlights other important methods and proxies used in modern paleoecology, including stable isotopes, ancient DNA, and paleomidden analyses• assesses nontraditional fossils• presents readers with several case studies that describe how the fossil record can help inform the scientific discussion on anthropogenic climate changeMammalian Paleoecology is an approachable overview of how we obtain information from fossils and what this information can tell us about the environments of the distant past. It will profoundly affect the way paleontologists and climatologists view the lives of ancient mammals.Until I Loved I Never Lived: A Literary Celebration of Love in All its Forms
