An accessible introduction to the historical and theological developments between the Old and New Testament.Bridging the end of the Old…
Testament period and the beginning of the New Testament period, this book surveys the history and theological developments of four significant eras in Israel's post-exilic history: the Persian Era (539-331 BC), the Hellenistic Era (332-167 BC), the Hasmonean Era (167-63 BC), and the Roman Era (63-4 BC). In doing so, it does away with the notion that there were four hundred years of prophetic silence before Jesus.Bridging the Testaments outlines the political and social developments of these four periods, with particular focus on their impact upon Judeans and Samarians. Using a wide range of biblical and extra-biblical sources, George Athas reconstructs what can be known about the history of Judah and Samaria in these eras, providing the framework for understanding the history of God's covenant people, and the theological developments that occurred at the end of the Old Testament period, leading into the New Testament. In doing so, Athas shows that the notion of a supposed period of four hundred years of prophetic silence is not supported by the biblical or historical evidence. Finally, an epilogue sketches the historical and theological situation prevailing at the death of Herod in 4 BC, providing important context for the New Testament writings. In this way, the book bridges the Old and New Testaments by providing a historical and theological understanding of the five centuries leading up to the birth of Jesus, tracking a biblical theology through them, and abolishing the notion of a four-century prophetic silence.

Your Life is Re-markable!: Becoming the you that's free to love
Par Jacqueline Scott. 2020
You know the you that you dream about being; the better version of who you are, the one your Maker…
intended? Why doesn&’t that just happen? How do we become the person we were made to be?Busy-ness, distraction and lack of direction keep us from growth. If we don&’t slow down and get some focus, we&’ll stay as we are. We&’ll miss out on who we were supposed to be. Our souls need nurturing to grow. My heart is small, but it is grow-able, &“re-markable&”! Though our lives are marked with sorrow, disappointment and confusion, we can be re-marked.With the flurry in our world, who has time to pause to consider life, where they&’re going and what they&’re becoming? This memoir is an invitation to listen in on my inner discovery as I face my life and invite you to do the same. The August 2015 Huffington Post reported that many mid-lifers feel dismissed by society by age 50, yet that&’s when all the wisdom is kicking in! We have to harness the wealth of our lives. My own growth seemed painfully slow. I was thrust into the disorientation and grind of cross-cultural life that pushed me to searching. I join many others on this quest of soul growth. Our past can inform us and launch us into a desired future. Our Creator calls us to examine our ways and test them. (Lamentations 3:40)Many of the subjects in this book echo parts of everyone&’s story. Yet there are myriad ways of dealing with our lives. We work hard to make money, stay healthy, arrange meals or choose a car. We plan our travels and our grocery lists, but how about our souls? What do we want to become? What do we want to accomplish by the end of our days?Foraging into this kind of journey takes time, thought and perseverance. Many abandon the effort leaving pieces scattered. Others attempt to assemble themselves and make good progress then leave it because of the dark uneasy parts where everything muddles. Some actually get to a point of seeing a coherent, meaningful picture of why they are stuck or what their life is for but lack a way forward. When we moved to our second overseas assignment, I wanted to be there, but my heart wasn&’t. I hoped to help the people there where God had supposedly been dead for decades. I had to take a deep look at where I&’d come from, what were the major influencing factors for good and bad and what conclusions I came to that may have set the course for bad patterns of thinking or relating. It was often the questions and accusations in the wee hours that urged me to bring my groanings to God; the ones I didn&’t really want to face. I wrestled with God trying to put words to my introversion. Books and friends, little by little, mentored me through. I began revisiting past influences and moments of my life that impacted me and noticed a connection between past and present struggles. Through redeemed life events and questions that boomeranged into new perspectives, I found myself being lifted to freedom, joy and inner growth. I hope to add to the soul-discovery conversation an angle that inspires longing and courage to face your life. With your cooperation, your Designer will newly mark the way you see yourself, your past, your relationships and your future. The journey guide at the end was crafted to help others walk through their journey to grasp more fully the story God wants to tell with their life.Reading this book should:Whet your appetite for adventuring with God into deeper heart transformation.Free you to courageously take an objective look at your life.Offer firm hope that there is more to your walk with God.Plunge you into piercing questions that cause reflection and communion with God and others.
The early French Wars (1689-1748) in North America saw provincial soldiers, or British white settlers, in Massachusetts and New Hampshire…
fight against New France and her Native American allies with minimal involvement from England. Most British officers and government officials viewed the colonial soldiers as ill-disciplined, unprofessional, and incompetent: General John Forbes called them “a gathering from the scum of the worst people.” Taking issue with historians who have criticized provincial soldiers’ battlefield style, strategy, and conduct, Steven C. Eames demonstrates that what developed in early New England was in fact a unique way of war that selectively blended elements of European military strategy, frontier fighting, and native American warfare. This new form of warfare responded to and influenced the particular challenges, terrain, and demography of early New England. Drawing upon a wealth of primary materials on King William’s War, Queen Anne’s War, Dummer’s War, and King George’s War, Eames offers a bottom-up view of how war was conducted and how war was experienced in this particular period and place. Throughout Rustic Warriors, he uses early New England culture as a staging ground from which to better understand the ways in which New Englanders waged war, as well as to provide a fuller picture of the differences between provincial, French, and Native American approaches to war.

Theological Ethics: The Moral Life of the Gospel in Contemporary Context
Par W. Ross Hastings. 2021
Be Prepared to Think Theologically through Today's Most Pressing Ethical and Moral Issues In Theological Ethics theologian, pastor, and ethicist…
W. Ross Hastings gives pastors, ministry leaders, and students a guide designed to equip them to think deeply and theologically about the moral formation of persons in our communities, about ethical inquiry and action, and about the tone and content of our engagement in the public square. The book presents a biblical perspective and a gospel-centered framework for thinking about complex contemporary issues in ways are life-giving and that will lead readers into greater flourishing as human persons in community. This book is distinctive in presenting:A framework for theological ethics that is robustly theological and Trinitarian. Ethics isolated from the gospel and theology becomes bad news, but when it is informed by and empowered by participation in the triune God of grace, it is part of the good news of the gospel. An approach to theology and theological ethics that makes the Word of God the ultimate authority and it is therefore grounded in the biblical narrative and texts. An understanding that theological ethics are inherently missional. The church as the image of the triune God makes it the home of ethics, but in light of its missional identity, it will reverberate outwards to engage the world in ways that are humble and not power-mongering, that are gospel-based and shalom-evoking. Theological Ethics is for those who lead churches or ministries (or someday will) and who urgently need deep theological grounding as they daily encounter ethical and moral issues where they need to provide a gracious, truthful, and gospel-directed response.X

Franchise: Trusting God First . . . Then Yourself
Par Seth Coleman. 2020
FRANCHISE is a supernatural thriller that helps us understand spiritual warfare on a personal level. With God&’s awesome angels protecting…
him, Daniel is led through a trial that takes him on a globe trekking odyssey from Los Angeles to Florida and on nerve-wracking flights to and from Rome while being pursued by assassins. Then finally back to the USA where courage and faith help him confront the enemy face to face. FRANCHISE takes the reader along with Daniel to ultimate victory and the antagonists into fearful confusion. When Daniel graduated from college and moved to Los Angeles he thought life couldn&’t get any better. But then he landed a job at Pop&’s Office Supply, a small franchise of about one hundred owners. Will and Winnie LaTrobe quickly became like parents to him and the franchisees like extended family. Going to work every day was a joy. The owners often told him stories of how Will had helped them through the tough times, when they were financially struggling or their business had gotten off track. Over the years, the franchise grew until it had spread overseas and the numbers attending their conventions mushroomed into thousands. Will had been able to steer the company through rough water while maintaining its integrity. Even through the turbulent years of going public on the stock exchange. However, then it was time for he and Winnie to retire. Will painstakingly took his time in choosing the highest quality candidate, but a few weeks before he was to start, the nominee took another offer, leaving Will no choice but to offer the job to his second choice . . . but in reality it was the first choice of a nefarious company that was bringing with them their own secret agenda. To take the franchise down. Within a few months Will&’s top management was replaced by another team who were soon sowing their seeds of discord within the company. At first Daniel stood behind them, until his close friend and associate, Greg Salas, showed him a stock market prospectus; a formal legal document which is required by and submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The official paper included personal details of each of the new management team. Daniel was shocked to learn that the new president had been hired after leaving a company that had just gone into chapter eleven bankruptcy and that several of the new team members had also left companies in similar circumstances. But why? Daniel prayed asking the Lord to help him understand what was going on and from that moment it was evident that the Holy Spirit was leading him from one incident to another. He pieced together an intricate scheme of greed that would ultimately lead the company to destruction, the investors in their stock to financial loss and Pop&’s franchise owners to ruin. The Recipe: Buy a popular blue-chip company offering premium dividends than invest heavily in the next company down the chain, with a much lower stock price . . . then, begin the assault on the first one in a &‘legally illegal&’ way.

Why I Am Still Surprised by the Power of the Spirit: Discovering How God Speaks and Heals Today
Par Jack S. Deere. 2020
In his classic Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, Jack Deere looked at the reason why many Christians (including…
himself at the time) struggle to believe in miraculous gifts, and he provided a groundbreaking biblical defense of the Holy Spirit's speaking and healing activities today. In Why I Am Still Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, the former Dallas Seminary professor revisits his earlier subject matter with fresh insight and even stronger conviction: the Scriptures teach that God is healing and speaking today just as he did 2,000 years ago.Having almost entirely rewritten Surprised by the Power of the Spirit, this new edition comes at a time when the theological landscape has dramatically changed, and most evangelicals do believe in all the gifts of the Spirit. But many of us are still unsure how to understand those gifts, and there is much confusion today on what it means to be filled with the Spirit. This book is for those familiar with Deere's work and for newcomers alike. In it, he:Explains the nature of spiritual gifts, defining each of them.Offers sound advice on discovering and using spiritual gifts in church.Tells documented stories of modern miracles and encounters with demonic powers.Examines the New Testament use of the phrase "filled with the Spirit" to show why and how God still fills his servants with the Holy Spirit.Introduces the newest literature defending and explaining the gifts of the Spirit. With the care of a scholar and the passion of personal experience, this new edition builds upon the legacy of Surprised by the Power of the Spirit and the profound impact it's had among Christians of many traditions.
