"Teaching Character in the Primary Classroom provides an excellent and very accessible overview of the emerging field of character education.…

It covers, in detail, the theory of character education as well as advice and guidance about how this should be applied in practice in primary schools."     Professor James Arthur, University of Birmingham Character matters.  As more and more schools are choosing to teach Character Education, trainee and beginning teachers need to know more.  What is Character Education? Can it really be ′taught′? How does children′s learning benefit from discussions around character in the classroom? How do I teach it? What does good teaching of Character Education look like in the classroom? Teaching Character Education in Primary schools tackles these questions, and many more. This is a practical guide to why and how we can teach character in primary schools. It begins by exploring why character matters and considers what ′character′ is and (importantly) what it is not. It goes on to discuss the place for teaching character in primary education and includes practical guidance on how it can be taught. The text also looks at character beyond the classroom, how parents and the wider community can be included in the teaching of character and how outdoor learning and education can contribute. This book is written for all those who are new to teaching character.

Slavery is a live issue today, but the people who talk about it as such are not all of a…

piece. Some insist the world is now plagued by the contemporary equivalent of transatlantic slavery, and call on us to combat "modern slavery". Others hold that the on-going devaluation and destruction of black life continues the logic of transatlantic slavery. They urge us to address the "afterlives" of racial chattel slavery. These two groupings provide different answers to the questions, "what do we know and what should we do about slavery?" This book reviews what is known about the issues at the heart of each perspective, and argues that the concept of "afterlives" is more helpful than that of "modern slavery" to those seeking to challenge injustice, violence, inequality and oppression in the twenty-first century.  Written by leading social scientists, the What Do We Know and What Should We Do About...? series offers concise, up-to-date overviews of issues often oversimplified, misrepresented or misunderstood and shows you how to enact change. "Short, sharp and compelling." - Alex Preston, The Observer "If you want to learn a lot about what matters most, in as short a time as possible, this is the series for you."- Danny Dorling, 1971 Professor of Geography, University of Oxford

At least 70% of the world’s population now lives under an autocracy. There are more openly authoritarian states than ever,…

democratic regimes are ‘backsliding’ into autocracy, and authoritarian values and practices are increasingly normalized. Regimes in China and Russia are as prominent and urgent as ever, but authoritarianism is spreading across the globe. Why is this happening? What can we do about it? This book is a concise and compelling exploration of the increasing number and influence of authoritarian regimes. It explains the realities of recent trends to ‘autocratisation’, the tools these regimes use, what we can do to resist, and why we might even allow ourselves a degree of optimism. Professor Natasha Lindstaedt works at the Department of Government at the University of Essex. Written by leading social scientists, the What Do We Know and What Should We Do About...? series offers concise, up-to-date overviews of issues often oversimplified, misrepresented or misunderstood and shows you how to enact change. Marketing, while essential to organisational success, is arguably one of the most controversial aspects of business management. Criticisms of marketing’s…

impact range from fostering materialism and unsustainable consumption patterns through to the use of deception, stifling of innovation and lowering of  quality, to name but a few. Taking a holistic and international perspective, this book critically examines the ethical challenges marketing faces and explores strategies marketers can use to respond to those challenges.   The book examines specific aspects of marketing activities, such as ethical considerations in relation to young consumers, potentially harmful products and criticism of the societal impact of medical, arts and tourism marketing activities.  It then combines these with wider discussions of frameworks that enable marketers to respond to ethical challenges, supplemented by discussions of cross-cultural and international perspectives, consumer responses and ethical consumption movements as well as shifting historical perceptions of marketing ethics. The book is accompanied by a companion website including: PowerPoint slides and teaching notes per chapter, links to free SAGE journal articles and online videos selected per chapter by the authors, quizzes per chapter and links to further reading online.

Learning Tracks is an assessment tool to support the planning and assessment of learning for children and young people with…

severe and complex learning disabilities (SCLD). It was designed by Lindy Furby and Jilly Catlow while teaching at St Crispin’s School for children and young people with severe and complex learning disabilities.  At the very early stages of learning, the steps that children and young people make can be small but incredibly significant for them and those who teach them. However, it can be problematic to evidence and formally recognise these achievements and plan next steps. Learning Tracks presents a framework to recognise achievement at these early levels and plan for progression through challenge, breadth and application. The Learning Tracks framework for recognising achievement at very early levels of learning: Can help teachers understand the way their children may be learning Offers a vocabulary for describing the learning Offers a structure for planning the learning When you purchase Learning Tracks, you receive the book that introduces you to the framework and theories underpinning Learning Tracks, describes the curriculum included and demonstrates how it can be implemented in your setting. In addition to this book you will also receive access to the complete ready-made Learning Tracks assessment tool that can be downloaded online. This is available as a PDF with editable elements and a template you can personalise it to suit your individual needs.

Sexualities and Society adopts a fresh, sociological perspective to explore the development of sexualities across both public and private spheres, giving…

thoughtful consideration to heterosexualities, cis, bi and trans identities. Divided into three parts, the book starts with an exploration into the history of sexuality, before covering the key theories, and how research into sexualities has been, and could be, conducted. Parts two and three examine how sexualities are framed by cultural factors and social institutions – including the media, religion, and politics – and considers the impact of how significant issues such as identity, age, health and violence relate to sexuality. Employing a range of international case studies, up to date policy developments, and engaging learning features such as ‘discussion points’ and ′fact file′ sections, this book is essential reading for students studying sexuality across sociology, social policy, social care, media, and politics.

Florida through the writing of a roving reporter"Some say that Floridians lack a sense of place—they won’t after reading Al Burt."—Ann Henderson, Former executive director, Florida Humanities CouncilAs a roving reporter for the Miami Herald from 1973 to 1995, Al Burt traveled all of Florida, studying it with the insight of a native and the detached eye of the foreign correspondent he had been. During those years, he observed connections with the state’s past and speculated about its future, and, while he was at it, took note of the human frailties and heroisms he witnessed every day. Al Burt's Florida is like a family portrait, a loving but not uncritical view of a complex and fascinating state.Burt's portrait combines vignettes of notable Floridians—some famous at the time, like Ed Ball, but most better known locally—with those of the state’s many special places: Okeechobee in the teens and twenties, Miami Beach in the fifties (when dinner in Havana was only a $26 plane ride away), Wakulla Springs when it served as Johnny Weismuller’s Tarzan movie set, modern-day Tallahassee with its formality and grace.Al Burt himself emerges from this landscape as the remarkable, engaging, and passionate Floridian he is. He takes us in hand, starting from his headquarters in the north Florida scrub, on a tour of the charm, substance, and fantasy of Florida, yesterday and today. And always, he dwells with greatest affection on the smaller places, the real places, the anchors of old Florida—and on those folks who do their best to preserve them. In the process he captures a sense of Florida as home.A volume in the Florida History and Culture series, edited by Raymond Arsenault and Gary R. Mormino
