The Politics of Islamic Ethics: Hierarchy and Human Nature in the Philosophical Tradition (New Cambridge Studies in Religion and Critical Thought)
Par Raissa A. von Doetinchem de Rande. 2025
Fundamental to Islamic thought is the idea that there is a way that human beings simply are, by nature or…
creation. This concept is called fiṭra. Rooting her investigation in the two central passages in the Qur'an and Hadith literature, where it is asserted that God created human beings in a certain way, the author moves beyond discussion of the usual figures who have commented on those texts to look instead at a group of classical Islamic philosophers rarely discussed in conjunction with ethical matters. Tracing the development of fiṭra through this overlooked strand of medieval thinking, von Doetinchem de Rande uses fiṭra as an entrée to wider topics in Islamic ethics. She shows that the notion of fiṭra articulated by al-Farabi, Ibn Bajja, Ibn Tufayl and Ibn Rushd highlights important issues about organizational hierachies of human nature. This, she argues, has major implications for contemporary political and legal debates.

Hunting Evil
Par Carlton Smith. 2000
What did a high-priced hooker and a low-class sex-offender have in common? It was-according to police-their lust for stalking, raping,…
and terrorizing young women and girls, in once case as young as thirteen-years-old. Michelle Michaud and her husky-voiced boyfriend James A. "Froggy" Daveggio used to hang around the local high school in search of their prey-and are suspected of brutally raping numerous women in the gutted van that was rigged to strap down their victims. But they may have gone farther than that... When the body of 22-year-old Vanessa Lei Sampson was found by the side of a California highway, police zeroed in on Michaud and Daveggio, who may be responsible for the young woman's murder, as well as numerous rapes. In a case as strange and gruesome as fiction-one of the few in which a woman has taken part in sexual assault-author Carlton Smith explores the twisted motives and shocking exploits of this dark and deadly duo.

Par Carlton Smith. 2008
Kathy Augustine was a controversial two-term Nevada State Controller. In 2003, her husband Chuck died of an apparent stroke. Only…
a month later, she married Chaz Higgs, an ER nurse who, it was later revealed, had attended to her late husband just before his death. Three years later, fifty-year-old Kathy died after a heart attack—the result, her family and friends believed, of a stressful political campaign. But when an autopsy of Kathy's body revealed no signs of heart disease, investigators dug deeper into Kathy's case…only to find the presence of a powerful, paralyzing emergency-room drug in Kathy's system. A jury would later charge Nurse Chaz with murder in the first degree. But could Kathy's first husband also have been the victim of Chaz's treachery? And just how much did Kathy know? This is the shocking true story of a family torn apart by lies, medical crime, and POISONED LOVE.

The Iranian Time Bomb: The Mullah Zealots' Quest for Destruction
Par Michael Ledeen. 2007
The War Against the Terror Masters is a must-read guide to the terrorist crisis. Michael A. Ledeen explains in startling…
detail how and why the United States was so unprepared for the September 11th catastrophe; the nature of the terror network we are fighting--including the state sponsors of that network; the role of radical Islam; and the enemy collaboration of some of our traditional Middle Eastern "allies";--and, most convincingly, what we must do to win the war.The War Against the Terror Masters examines the two sides of the war: the rise of the international terror network, and the past and current efforts of our intelligence services to destroy the terror masters in the U.S. and overseas. Ledeen's new book also visits every country in the Near East and describes the terrorist cancers in each. Among many revelations that will attract wide attention: *How the terror network survived the loss of its main sponsor, the Soviet Union. *How the FBI learned from a KGB defector--twenty years before Osama's bin Laden's murderous assault--of the existance of Arab terrorist sleeper networks inside the United States. *How moralistic guidelines straight-jacketed the FBI from even collecting a file of newspaper clippings on known terror groups operating in America. *How the internal culture of the CIA, and severe limitations on its ability to operate, blinded us to the growth of terror networks. And much more.

mentor by many of his associates. Handsome, athletic, and established, he was also a magnet for women. Deepti Gupta, a thirty-three-year-old fellow doctor, was the kind of conquest Anderson sought: pretty, anxious to do well, and eager to please. It wasn't long before they began having an affair...But the affair soon ended when Deepti told her mentor that she was pregnant with his child. threatened with exposure as a sexual harasser and his career and marriage at risk, Anderson took his lover on a romantic rendezvous in the San Gabriel Mountains. under the stars, Anderson strangled Deepti with his necktie, doused her body and car with gasoline, and shoved both over a steep cliff to make it look like an accident. But was it an outburst of unexpected rage, as Anderson later claimed, or was it premeditated murder? Or was it something more mysterious still?

Los gozos y las sombras (El Libro De Bolsillo Alianza Editorial Ser. #Vol. 308)
Par Gonzalo Torrente Ballester. 1995
