The definition of variable stiffness structured workpieces includes three key features: multiple geometrical features, multiple geometrical tolerance constraints, and multistage manufacturing processes (denoted as 3M features). The variable stiffness structured workpieces have multiple geometrical features (planar surfaces, cylindrical surfaces, cone surfaces, sphere surfaces, freeform surfaces, etc.) with multiple geometric tolerance constraints (flatness, waviness, roughness, roundness, cylindrical degree, etc.) and are manufactured by multiple manufacturing processes. The 3M features of variable stiffness structured workpieces bring challenges for products&’ quality evaluation and quality control. The quality propagation of multiple quality characteristics through multiple manufacturing processes is complicated. The multiscale geometrical specifications influence the final functions of products in different ways. And the varied stiffness problem brought by complex geometry structure of the workpieces also makes the manufactured surface quality hard to control. The book is intended for undergraduate, graduate students, and researchers who are interested in developments of quality control methods and applications.

the mid-twentieth century. Although music historians acknowledge a prominent African American fiddle tradition during the era of slavery, only recently have researchers begun to closely examine the history and social implications of these musical practices. Research on African music reveals a highly developed tradition in West Africa, which dates to the eleventh or twelfth century and continues today. From these West African roots, fiddling was prominent in many African American communities between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, and the fiddle became an important instrument in early twentieth-century blues, jazz, and jug bands. While less common in late twentieth-century African American jazz and popular music groups, the fiddle remained integral to the musicking of some Black musicians in the rural South.Featured in Fiddling Is My Joy is access to a comprehensive online eScholarship Companion that contains maps, photographs, audiovisual examples, and other materials to expand the work of this enlightening and significant study. To understand the immense history of fiddling, DjeDje uses geography to weave together a common thread by profiling the lives and contributions of Black fiddlers in various parts of the rural South and Midwest, including the mountains and along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. In addition to exploring the extent that musical characteristics and aesthetics identified with African and European cultures were maintained or reinterpreted in Black fiddling, she also investigates how the sharing of musical ideas between Black and white fiddlers affected the development of both traditions. Most importantly, she considers the contradiction in representation. Historical evidence suggests that the fiddle may be one of the oldest uninterrupted instrumental traditions in African American culture, yet most people in the United States, including African Americans, do not identify it with Black music.

How do these representations manifest in different genres of comics like superheroes, biography, underground comix, and journalism? What resources unique to the comics medium do they bring to their tasks? How do these works resonate with the ethical and environmental issues raised by global conversations about the anthropogenic sixth mass extinction and climate change? How have comics mourned the loss of nature over the last five decades? Are comics “ecological objects,” in philosopher Timothy Morton’s parlance? Weaving together insights from comics studies, environmental humanities, critical animal studies, and affect studies to answer these questions, Comics of the Anthropocene: Graphic Narrative at the End of Nature explores the representation of animals, pollution, mass extinctions, and climate change in the Anthropocene Era, our current geological age of human-induced environmental transformation around the globe. Artists and works examined in Comics of the Anthropocene include R. Crumb, Don McGregor et al.’s Black Panther, Jack Kirby’s Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth, the comics of the Pacific Northwest, and Stephen Murphy and Michael Zulli’s landmark alternative series The Puma Blues. This book breaks new ground in confronting our most daunting modern crisis through a discussion of how graphic narrative has uniquely addressed the ecology issue.

In acclaimed comics such as The Maximortal, Army@Love, and Can’t Get No, Veitch employs a style that synthesizes Jack Kirby at his most cosmic, the mind-bending graphic sensibility of European innovators such as Jean (Moebius) Giraud and Philippe Druillet, and the brass-tacks realism of classic war cartoonists such as John Severin and Russ Heath. His comics defamiliarize popular genres—especially superheroes, war stories, and science fiction—with his philosophical musings and pointedly satirical political perspective. Yet Veitch’s capacious mind reaches beyond these familiar genres, too, as his long-running autobiographical dream comic Roarin’ Rick’s Rare Bit Fiends attests. Ranging across topics such as his early days at the Joe Kubert School, the controversial end of his Swamp Thing run, his muckraking work as a comics journalist, and his educational comics publishing venture, Eureka Comics, the interviews collected here reveal Veitch to be both a shrewd observer of the pitfalls of the marketplace and an eloquent spokesman for the boundless potential of creativity. A comics maker since childhood and a fierce advocate of creator’s rights and the possibilities of self-publishing, Veitch knows all too well the many persistent obstacles to creating comics that challenge readers instead of condescending to them. Yet Veitch remains optimistic about the potential of comics. According to Veitch, comics “might be the form of the future.” If that’s the case, then his work is a map to that future.

The selection features both poetry and short prose, all of which are instantly recognizable to a Soviet native, and all of which hold cultural currency, potency, and valence similar to popular children’s literature in the United States, such as Green Eggs and Ham, Curious George, or Make Way for Ducklings. These texts have either never been translated into English before or appear in all-new translations, literary rather than literal; the featured original Soviet illustrations are reprinted for the English-reading market for the first time. Alongside the translations themselves is a scholarly component that guides Anglophone readers to experience mainstays of Soviet children’s writing. Essayists investigate literary material and perspectives using a broad range of approaches and methodologies applied to Soviet children’s literature. In Bluegrass Gospel: The Music Ministry of Jerry and Tammy Sullivan, anthropologist and journalist Jack Edward Bernhardt explores the lives, music, and ministry of acclaimed father-daughter bluegrass gospel performers and recording artists Jerry (1933–2014) and Tammy Sullivan (1964–2017) of southwest Alabama. Beginning in 1993, Bernhardt lived and traveled with the Sullivans as they took their music and testimony along bumpy back roads to backwoods sanctuaries from the Florida Panhandle to Mississippi, Louisiana’s bayous, Texas, Arkansas, and beyond. The author’s compelling narrative combines long-term fieldwork with extensive oral histories, archival research, photography, and tape recordings of the Sullivans’ music and testimonies in secular and sacred contexts. Bernhardt describes in vivid detail the challenges of life on the road through unforeseen circumstances and the financial uncertainty of performing for pass-the-collection-basket “love offerings,” while remaining committed to doing the work they felt called to do. In an afterword by Marty Stuart, Jerry’s friend and cowriter of the 1995 Grammy-nominated “At the Feet of God,” Stuart recounts his experiences playing mandolin with the Sullivan Family on the “Brush Arbor Trail” as a talented, wide-eyed twelve-year-old. In the penultimate chapter, Bernhardt accompanies Tammy’s widower, Jonathan Causey, and their son, Jon Gideon, to churches along the same gospel trail blazed by Jerry and Tammy. With their own music ministry, the Causeys continue the legacy of song and testimony the Sullivans pursued for thirty-five years. Ultimately, Bernhardt reflects on how his relationship with the Sullivans led to friendship and mutual respect for cultural differences that endure through time. The result is an intimate portrayal of life, faith, and family-based music ministry in the South today as in the past.
